Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
I don’t think there’s been a genuine word-of-mouth indie B-movie franchise like this in a while, has there? Especially where each new entry (potentially) outperforms the last one by such a significant margin.

That then got me thinking about how spoiled we all were in the 80s with our horror movies. Sure, 90% of them sucked but damn did we have a wealth of horror movies to get excited about! |

$20 million opening?
 NFW. $10-12 mil maybe. |
Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
As someone who enjoyed the 1st sequel, I found this 3rd part to be a disappointment. Damien Leone tries to give the human characters more depth and to provide a dramatic build-up to the predictable showdown between Art and Sienna, but he's not a good enough writer or director to breathe any life into the domestic scenes as Sienna attempts to recover from the trauma of her past (a la Laurie Strode) by staying with her aunt's family. There are too many of these humdrum sequences that fill up the screentime when Art isn't on display and they are so bland and generic and full of boring dialogue that they grind the story's pacing to to a halt. They also just rehash a lot of what happened in the previous movie and don't do much to advance the narrative beyond what we already know.
Even the gleefully over-the-top gore scenes, which are the only reason to sit through this, feel less inspired here and seem to be randomly dropped in to fulfill the expected qore quota without regard to how well they move the storyline along -- coming across as less shocking and more perfunctory than in the previous installments. Also, giving Art a companion in crime (Vicky) who can speak and talks a lot kind of robs Art of some of his unique appeal as a killer mime and is bit of a cheat, since she gets to spout off a lot of the cliche villain-type dialogue and serves as a familiar device to cackle, sneer and spell things out for the audience. Finally, there's a dumb plot twist involving a present that Sienna puts under the Xmas tree that is so ridiculously obvious in how it plays out, considering that the shape of the box completely gives away what's inside of it. That the villains so easily fall for this ruse is another example of Leone's under-cooked screenplay. . |

BUT if that turns out to be true. Fantastic for them. I only saw the first and didn't really care for it but based on what I read about the second and this I will probably catch up someday. |
Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
SATURDAY AM: Refresh for more updates In one of the year’s second-best triumphs for indie genre cinema after NEON’s Longlegs, Cineverse’s under $5M investment, Terrifier 3, is screaming to an estimated $17M-$18M+ 3-day after an $8.2M Friday. There’s even a school of thought that this movie could go way higher than that after a B CinemaScore, which is very high for a horror movie by that moviegoer pollster. |
Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
I saw it yesterday afternoon. I would say there were about 20 people in the small auditorium I was in. Anyway, is it a "Good" movie? I'm not sure I can say that. Mainly because it's extremely unpleasant and savagely gory.
One woman who was sitting two seats from me walked out after the opening murder sequence where a child gets hacked up. You don't see the actual murder, but you hear it and you see the aftermath. I guess she was so disgusted. But, the murder of the adults was pretty vicious. Anyway, there really isn't a lot I can say. This is a direct continuation of the last movie with the protagonist "Sienna" returning and confronting Art. There are a lot of savage kills without mercy. One guy gets a chain saw up his ass, which was really hard to watch. The makeup and special effects are pretty good and don't look cheap. And yes they leave things open for a sequel. |

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
Truthfully hearing about kids getting murdered in the movie is kind of a turn off for me. It comes across like- “how much can we get away with before people start to turn?” and controversy for the sake of it.

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
This may (or may not?) be for casual horror fans, but based on those fairly spectacular opening numbers – which aren’t far off the predicted $20 million opening posted a while back – there’s clearly a horror audience out there that has been underserved for a while now, at least in theatres, even by the allegedly “extreme” or unrated fare we’ve been getting for years that generally only pushes the envelope a little at best. I give the filmmakers credit for just going all in for this series. Icky (though extremely well-done) as it was, I thought the ‘15-minute sequence’ in Part 2 was a highlight of contemporary horror (and not in the sense that I get some cheap thrill out of it but just because, yes, it dared to give a lot of jaded horror fans exactly what they often claimed they really wanted when other horror films routinely didn’t deliver). As for the killing kids stuff that folks mentioned, it’s definitely not for everyone but this is far from the first movie to do it (nor the first to apparently imply it offscreen, when other, less gory films have outright shown it).

I think I'm pretty jaded when it comes to violence and gore, but these movies are fucking crazy and even had me turning away and gagging during some scenes

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
Estimated $18.3m weekend haul.

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
I tried to make it through the first one and stopped after the murder of Catherine Corcharan's character (the hacksaw scene). It was just too much for me and I know this isn't something I would like. That being, said, while I don't like this franchise in terms of content, I admire it immensely for realizing bigger budgets aren't the key to profit. Quite the opposite. So good on them for making something big with very little.
Sidnote: is this movie under release as unrated or with an R? The theater where I went today to see Saturday Night had it listed as an R rated movie, but, they also had a big warning sign at the front stating "extreme graphic violence." IIRC, both the original and sequel made the rounds as unrated movies and had to get special screenings or times at whatever chains carried them. If this one is even worse than those in terms of violence, I'm kind of surprised they let it go with the R rating. Granted, the theater seemed to be doing all it could to make sure kids don't see it, but if it has that rating, then they technically can get into the theater. |
Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
I avoided Rob Zombie's movies and the Saw films for the longest time because when I was younger I had a real problem with gore. I always closed my eyes and looked away when Murphy was being shot up during Robocop because it bothered me. Now at almost 50 these films don't bother me at all. I loves me some Rob Zombie mayhem and the first two Terrifier films didn't gross me out at all.

I know most here try to keep up with the latest movies that have a lot of chatter and buzz. But, I can understand if something like this scares you off. Everyone has their limits (even if you try to be all Mr. Tough Guy) when it comes to sadistic torture and murder on film.

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)
Based on what I knew about the series, I was on the fence about whether I wanted to see this right up until the moment I bought my ticket for the Friday matinee. Very full theatre, and believe it or not a lot of family groups, most of whom wore WWF or heavy metal T-shirts.
I'm glad I went, as I enjoyed the experience of seeing a horror movie that actually made me feel "I'm getting in over my head, this is too much for me." No so much the gore, but the uncompromising cruelty. My main criticism of modern day horror films is the slickness of the production, that gives them a generic look, and a toothless atmosphere. I'm a big fan of the look and feel of late 70s and early 80s films, like the Friday the 13th series, that existed in a middle-space between amateurish and big studio. These movies have a unique energy to them, that seems to be lost in the later films where effort is being expended on fancy lighting, and camera movement. There is a seediness to them, like they're pornographic films. Terrifier 3 manages to recapture all of this, re-creating that middle-space. I also loved the idea of the killer acting as though they were a silent film comedian. It wasn't goofy or funny, but felt perfectly natural for the character. Despite enjoying this transgressive experience, I have no immediate desire to go back to check the previous films. One trip to this well was enough for me. |

Following the actor who plays Art on Threads. Could possibly have been a set-up, but someone posted about how he and his wife had to stop watching the first movie during the chainsaw scene. Howard Thornton pops in the comments with "sorry you had to split!"

Unrated.
In that case, then this movie has really broken some boundaries. Has something that's unrated (technically "X" by old school standards) ever been a #1 movie? |
