Re: Chameleon actors
I love both of them but those are two of the least chameleon like actors out there. With the exception of maybe Raging Bull, it’s De Niro and Pacino doing De Niro and Pacino in every single movie.

"Hoo-hah!" & "Look at me ..."

Both great actors, though. Chameleons? Yeah, maybe not so much.

Maybe it's because it's so early in his career, but watching Taxi Driver, there is no De Niro, there is only Travis Bickle and he is scary.

Re: Chameleon actors
I love the man but he does have a very charismatic personality that bleeds into his roles
I know I’m going out on a limb calling Day-Lewis a great actor but i rewatched The Gangs of New York recently and was blown away by how lost he got in that role. The movie could have been better but Daniel Day-Lewis gave possibly the best performance I’ve ever seen on a movie. It’s simply amazing!

Re: Chameleon actors
When you watch Scarface and Carlito's Way you would have no idea Pacino was Italian and he played a Cuban gangster and a Spanish gangster and you would never thought he was a white guy playing another race.
De Niro in Awakenings and Cape Fear showed his range and two completely different characters and he nailed both of them.
Maybe in the 2000's except for a few roles here and there they probably mail it in and don't care about being method but in their primes they were the best.

Billy Bob Thornton Is a good example of an actor whose face and body seems to uncannily change throughout different roles along with his mannerisms, voice and patterns of speaking.

Good call! Seeing him transform into Karl Childers on Inside The Actors Studio was amazing.

Which Spanish gangster? Carlito in Carlito's Way is supposed to be Puerto Rican.

Re: Chameleon actors
Although DeNiro, Pacino or Jack Nicholson all have one or two parts where they completley melt with the role, for me they are the examples of actors who always play themselves, so the complete opposite of chameleons. Saying one couldn't tell that Pacino isn't Puerto Rican or Cuban is not really a chameleon. If it is easy to make impressions of the actor, they probably don't blend into their roles that much.

Alec Guinness was the perfect example of a chameleon actor.

I always figured it was Scent of a Woman and all his “Hoo Ah” stuff. Once you win an Oscar, you stick with the schtick.

Before Kevin Spacey was exposed as a predator and cancelled by the public, he was a pretty good chameleon actor. He played a vast assortment of unique characters in his career.
