Re: 2023 Academy Awards

didnt even know The Woman King was a movie in theaters. I seen it at Target in new releases and thought it was an Asylum type of movie riding the coattails of Black Panther 2.

So are they upset that 2 black actresses didnt get nominated, or mad because they spent a shit load of money and they didnt get nominated? Pretty sure alot of other people that money was spent on didn’t get nominated. Why bring these 2 up specifically?

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

They weren't just random actresses. They were considered front runners so kinda stuck out not being nominated.

Yeah. And they're black.

The Woman King has a has a 94% critic score and 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics consistently lauded Viola Davis' performance. It made $67 million domestically and $92 million worldwide. That's not a blockbuster box office level, but those numbers are certainly way higher than any potential notion of flying under the radar. Your personal ignorance of the movie has no objective bearing on the quality of the movie or whether Viola Davis' performance was worthy of an Oscar nomination.

Seriously it just reeks of typical hollywood hypocritical ideals. Yeah it would be ideal if awards are always given to those that deserve it but that's not how the world works. I don't begrudge someone campaigning for their own movie if they don't have the typical connections or money to campaign for it the traditional way.

The Academy Awards are going up opposite the season finale of HBO's newest hit, The Last of Us.
Good luck, Oscar.

And DST returns on that same Sunday so more lost viewers on the West Coast when there we be sunlight and not a lot of people going to sit down around 5pm in front of their TVs to watch it.

No no, the viewership of the Oscars will be down because it's "woke", due to someone making a single political joke at some point in the 3+ hour broadcast.

In fairness, political speeches by the winners do get a little tedious.

I understand your point though.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Except for the Will Smith incident does the general public remember who won last year?

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Barry Diller thinks the ceremony should be done exclusively for the industry and is not relevant anymore since the public does not care.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

A cranky old man who isn't in show business doesn't think anyone cares about the Oscars? And you thought that was an opinion that needed to be shared here?

Alrighty then...

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Well, does the public actually care? Ratings for the broadcast indicate otherwise. I usually just read the results on Twitter. If it was an industry-only event, what would it change?

He was a big part of owning and creating entertainment in the past so his opinion could be valid in some ways.

Ratings for everything are down.
The Will Smith - Chris Rock incident and the LA La Land mix-up are proof that yes, the public still watches and still cares.
The 2021 Covid show was the absolute nadir and the recent host-less events have been duds, but as much as anyone cares about any award show at all, the Oscars still matter.

JeffTheAlpaca 02-05-23 08:16 PM

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

But not sure most people saw those events like and probably heard about it on the internet, Twitter, or social media where something major happened at the Oscars

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

No one is watching the telecast (though they might do better this year since the Academy picked movies people actually care about) so what’s the difference if they just do an industry-only award ceremony? Short and sweet and you still find out who won everything the next day.

Just seems like no one really cares enough to justify the expense and effort of the live broadcast. I think they just don’t want to let it go but it seems clear to me the time has past where celebrating movies and movie stars was something the whole country got behind.

The Oscars drew over 16 million viewers last year. That is a massive tv number in 2022. If it should be taken off tv, then literally every show that's not football should also be taken off tv. This conversation is beyond stupid.

Having just watched the Grammy Awards tonight, it occurs to me that the Grammys and Oscars are polar opposites.

While the Grammy Awards honor exclusively popular, chart-topping music, the Academy honors films that trend artier and non-commercial. And some of these films, like Banshees of Inisherin, only seem to pick up commercial interest after they are nominated.

2022’s telecast had the second-worst viewership for the Oscars ever

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

I've brought this up before but how much can the Oscars really cost to produce? Yeah sure it costs a lot but they get more then 4 hours of programming for it and I'm sure it costs a lot less then a lot of other programming. And while it might not have the prestige or the audience it had way back when it seems like it still pulls in good viewership. That's not counting all the intangibles like promotion of the nominated movies and just contributing to the appeal of movies in general. So why in the world would they get rid of the telecast?

The Production costs more than $ 40 million.

To be fair the Grammy also awards big awards to artists who were chart-topping 30-40 years ago as an IOU. They essentially have their Paul Newman win's best actor for Color Of Money or Pacino winning for Scent Of A Woman moment every year except the IOU lifetimime Grammy is even later in the artists career..

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

The Oscars are still a big deal. The 16 million ratings are really good. Not everything is going to do NFL NUMBERS.

The only reason so many people watched it for decades is there were only 3 channels for a long time and now there are infinite entertainment options.

Oscars aren’t going anywhere. And whomever is in charge that allows a broadcast that is mostly movie clips, montages and people standing there to cost $40 million should be fired.
