Eh, you guys are way to optimistic on behalf of EEAAO. The Academy will vote in an academy-way and either The Fabelmans or Banshees will take most of the big awards.

Wasn't Godfather 3 also nominated?

I know Return of the King, Fury Road and Black Panther all were nominated, and I think The Two Towers was as well.

I'm not sure what else.

As for the nominations, while I haven't seen everything that got a nod, it seems like a fairly decent list compared to a lot of years. I am surprised that Pearl didn't get anything. I thought it could potentially be up for cinematography and that Mia Goth would be nominated. I guess I'm still underestimating the Academy's hatred of horror.

WTF?

That has to be a first.

The movie got a whole bunch of Razzie noms, but De Armas didn't for WORST ACTRESS:

WORST ACTRESS

Ryan Kiera Armstrong / “Firestarter”

Bryce Dallas Howard / “Jurassic Park: Dominion”

Diane Keaton / “Mack & Rita”

Kaya Scodelario / “The King’s Daughter”

Alicia Silverstone / “The Requin”

^ I know the Razzies are all supposed to be in good fun but it’s kind of dick move to nominate a child. Stick to adults who can take the joke.

I'm not sure what else.

Okay here's the list :
Spoiler:
The Bells of St Mary (sequel to Going My Way)
The Godfather Part II
The Godfather Part III
Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers
Lord of the Rings : Return of the King
Toy Story 3
Mad Max : Fury Road
______________

Black Panther is not considered to be a sequel, although it kind of fits the description of one.

Name them (behind spoilers) .

Spoiler:
Do you mean, COUNTING this year?

Here's all I can think of if counting this year:

The Godfather - Part 2
The Godfather - Part 3
Return of the King
The Two Towers
Avatar 2 - The Way of Water
Top Gun Maverick
Mad Max: Fury Road
Toy Story 3
The Bells of St. Mary's

Decker 01-25-23 08:27 AM

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Yup that's all of them. Seven previously, two this year.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

I like this trivia. Here's two question:

1) What film has won for BEST PICTURE without having a nomination in any other category?

2) There have only been two TIES in the acting categories. Name the 4 award winners.

Decker 01-25-23 08:52 AM

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Regarding 2 :
Spoiler:
I know about Katherine Hepburn (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner) and Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl). The other one must have been considerably earlier.

There was a fairly recent tie in another category though. Can't remember what it was in right now.

ViewAskewbian 01-25-23 09:05 AM

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Decker, you got the first one and are on the right track about the other two.

The tie you are thinking about happened in Sound Editing and was won by Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty back in 2013.

It had only happened 5 times before that, two of them the acting ties in my trivia question.

I think there is actually a not-so-small contingent of (older) Academy voters who actively hate EEAaO. While it is cool and original, it's also loud and in your face. If you don't buy in fairly quickly to its tone and outlandish premise it's not the sort of movie that is going to win you over eventually - - it's going to bludgeon you.
I have a feeling that this is exactly the sort of movie that could be hurt by a preferential ballot - - if you don't love it, it could drop pretty low in your ranking. I don't see that sort of hate for Banshees or Fabelmans.

Decker 01-25-23 09:07 AM

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Thanks VA. It would have driven me nuts wondering what that recent tie was.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Yeah, EEAAO's award are the nominations. I fully expect it to take Supporting Actor but that's the ceiling on it.

4 didn't get a Best Pic nom outside of animated.

I believe the answer to the first question is:
Spoiler:
Grand Hotel

For the second question, I only can think of the one acting tie that has already been mentioned. This is going to bug me.

I hope Michelle Yeoh win best actress.

Hey if she can hang on to a moving van, fall off the car, and jump on the moving train on the motorcycle then she deserve the Oscar. :)

Technically someone tied that record. Emma Stone briefly won Best Picture for a few minutes despite not being a Best Picture nominee and having 1 singular nomination in a different category(Best Actress)

On a bike she was too short to reach the footpegs, I might add. Someone else had to put it in gear for her, she just let out the clutch, opened the throttle, and roared up that ramp onto the moving train.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Honestly, even though I wasn't crazy about the film, I would love to see Michelle Yeoh win. Much like when Mickey Rourke got his single nomination for The Wrestler, I doubt she'll ever get another shot at this. And just like Rourke, who lost to Sean Penn, Michelle is likely to lose to Cate Blanchett who has won before and is likely to be nominated many more times in the future. It's kind of a bummer.

No Asian actress have ever won the Oscar but who know maybe the Acadmey will give her first.
