Re: 2023 Academy Awards
A24 is really showing up this year after a lackluster nomination count last year. Well earned.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards
Generally feel like this is a pretty great list of nominees this year, lot of somewhat quirky films like Everything and Triangle mixed with more traditional stuff like Fablemans and All Quiet. I haven’t seen all I want to yet - Tar is definitely on my list for the weekend - but right now I’d pick these for my choices:
Best Pic: Everything Everywhere
Best Actor: Colin Farrell
Best Actress: Yeoh (although Cate may sneak ahead when I see Tar)
Best Supporting: Quan of course just for the speech alone
Best Supporting Actress: Curtis - first time I saw EE I didn’t even know it was her!
Best Director: The Daniels for EE
Best Pic: Everything Everywhere
Best Actor: Colin Farrell
Best Actress: Yeoh (although Cate may sneak ahead when I see Tar)
Best Supporting: Quan of course just for the speech alone
Best Supporting Actress: Curtis - first time I saw EE I didn’t even know it was her!
Best Director: The Daniels for EE

While we're hitting familial Oscar trivia, without Google, can you name the only person to direct both a parent AND a child to Oscar winning roles?

I think the Big 4 awards will go to 4 different films.
Picture: EEAAO
Director: Spielberg
Actor: Farrell
Actress: Blanchett

I'm hoping The Fabelmans makes it back for a regular theatrical run, and not just the one-off Best Picture Marathon they do right before the Oscars. Seems like it came and went.

I'm so puzzled as to how the distributor handled that movie. My small town had it running for over a month and getting a good audience, yet so many people here posted they couldn't see it because none of their theatres showed it.

You are probably right, but an animated film on the list I had almost forgotten about is The Sea Beast, it will not win, but it is a surprisingly good animated film. There are some solid contenders for Best Animated, and I am eager to watch Puss In Boots The Last Wish on streaming or cable, but I might buy it on demand depending on how impatient I get.

It seems Everything Always is most people pick for Best picture. And that’s fine with me.
There is literally no other movie like it

Yeah, a few months back I expected it to be nominated but not win BP, but now I don't feel like any of the other nominees have as a big a crowd of enthusiasts as EEAAO does. Unless this is one of those Chicago years where Elvis wins out of the blue.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards
Yay! Fabelmans is back at the upscale theater near my house, but matinees only. That could change though. Back in 2020, Parasite was one showing per day till it got a ton of Oscar nods, then they were showing it multiple times per day on 2 screens.
And even though I haven't seen it yet, it could be a BP favorite. One thing to remember is that the Academy is mostly actors, and they LOVE movies about acting. Hence the surprise BP wins for Shakespeare in Love, and the ensemble piece Crash. It's also why I was slightly surprised that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood didn't pull in the top prize, because that movie was damn near porn for Hollywood types, with every single scene about acting and/or filmmaking
(Oh yeah, and y'all got my trivia question right)

Re: 2023 Academy Awards
The performative nature of all of this has just turned the Oscars into a joke. Sure, EEAAO probably will win BP, but not for any real reason other than the campaign for it prevailed. It's fine, it's not a disgrace by any means but...c'mon..best picture? That's laughable!

(FYI, I liked Everything Everywhere. Didn't love it. I liked it. But I'm genuinely curious as to why it shouldn't even be considered Best Picture material)

Thank you Paff, I'm right there with you. I was beginning to think that I was the only person on Earth who wasn't madly in love with this movie. I thought it was very good and original but nothing earth shattering. That said there's no denying that there is a top tier of BP nominees. That tier is Banshees, Fabelmans and EEAaO (and maybe Tar). I prefer Banshees and Fabelmans, but I wouldn't think it's a travesty if EEAaO won.

Looking back on the movies I saw last year, I thought Emma Thompson was a lock for a nomination for Good Luck Leo Grande, but apparently not. [/b]

Re: 2023 Academy Awards
I think the absence of both Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis are more glaring omissions. Both felt like near-locks. I hadn't heard any Emma Thompson buzz despite her Globes nod.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards
Okay another Oscar trivia question :
History was made as two sequels were nominated for Best Picture. Only seven movies considered to be "sequels" had ever been nominated before.
Name them (behind spoilers) .

Re: 2023 Academy Awards
Emma Thompson went all out and went nude for that role and bore her soul with sexual material that would be most uncomfortable for most actors or actresses and more deserving than those two you mentioned.

Ana De Armas got a Oscar nomination and a Razzie nomination?
WTF?
That has to be a first.
