Re: 2023 Academy Awards

That is not correct.

I think the lady who played the grandma in Parasite won a supporting actress award 2 years ago.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

It is cool Brian Tyree Henry got nominated for Causeway.

If Austin Butler wins he will be the first actor ever born in the 90's to win a best actor award.

I have a feeling that it will be unanimous Brendan Fraser will win for the Whale but I bet we get a curveball and maybe Colin Farrall or a darkhorse will win like that year Anthony Hopkins won for the Father.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

It's the grandmother from Minari who won an Oscar a couple years ago.

Plus Miyoshi Umeki won for Sayonara in 1958.

It’s been 93 years between All Quiet on the Western Front winning best picture and it’s remake being nominated for best picture.

Decades after a movie wins Best Picture and its remake also gets nomination for Best Picture. That sort of an occurrence hasn't happened since.... One year ago!

I love that Ariana DeBose won best supporting actress for playing Anita after Rita Moreno did for the original, since it now changes the famous trivia question to: Name the THREE pairs of actors who won an Oscar for playing the same character.

Spoiler:
Besides those two
Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando (Vito Corleone)
Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix (The Joker)

Yeah, but 93 years?! That’s pretty crazy.

As opposed to 62 years, which happens so often it's just a cliche at this point.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Theatrical movies made a big comeback this year where last year the streamers dominated.

Maybe this will motive Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Apple +, and etc to put out more award worthy films later this year.

I don't think Fraser is such a lock. The Whale has received mixed reactions at best. I think people like his story more than his movie. I think it's between Butler and Farrell.

The Whale not being nominated for Best Picture lowers his chances a bit.

I would be perfectly happy with either Butler of Farrell winning. And like you said, I’m a big fan of Fraser in general so if he wins, I’ll be happy for him too.

Wow. But I don't see any mention of what rules might have been violated.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

To my understanding, the campaign spoke to people personally, when you're supposed to just get the studio to buy ads and send out screeners ect. The thing strikes me as incredibly petty.

Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till), two actresses of color that were backed by well-funded campaigns by Sony and MGM/Amazon, respectively, and were widely predicted to score honors, yet presumably do not have access to a network of powerful (and, let’s be honest, white) friends in the Academy to campaign for Oscars on their behalf.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Ok, so put her in the Razzie category and move Ryan Kiera Armstrong to Best Actress Oscar. Problems solved.

How dare she not campaign the old fashioned, borderline bribery way

It's not just that, though it is weird that the "blessed" way to campaign is by the studio spending a ton of money.

I'm sure this happens all the time (most notably Weinstein and Shakespeare in Love) but using your connections to rally people to get a nod is not supposed to be allowed for obvious reasons. I believe one of the correspondences even mentioned Viola and Danielle by name basically begging people to put Andrea's name first on their noms because the other two were "already guaranteed a spot" (which was obviously not true).

The cow (and cow wrangler) are icing on the cake.

Lynch is such a lovable kook. I would love to have coffee with him just to chat him up.

Considering that the Oscars are just the film industry giving itself awards (often based solely on popularity), I think that bar is already pretty low.
