Re: 2023 Academy Awards

I would take Avatar The Way of Water any day over Elvis. That film felt like a total mess to me.

Hey where are all the nominations for The Menu?

I'd take The Menu over Avatar or Elvis in a heartbeat

RRR is a more worthy film to nominate for Best Picture than Avatar, IMO.
Well, that is pretty bizarre. What would the rationale be behind that decision? I can't imagine they would be limited to one submission, so why not submit both?

Each country is limited to one submission for the Best International Feature category. They went with their love letter to movies movie over a crowd pleaser, probably thinking RRR was too over the top.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

If we’re gonna put Avatar in Best Picture, then Wakanda Forever should have gotten the nod too. It is pretty telling that Avatar got a BP nod but nothing for direction, writing or any of the actors.

“It’s the best picture of the year, just not because of the directing, writing or acting” is always such a weird thing.

Why not submit it for best picture?

At a glance, it looks like it had to have been released in L.A., but I would presume it was. Of course, I have no basis for that presumption.

The producers (not India) did campaign for Best Picture and multiple other categories, but was not nominated.

It was eligible. It just didn't make the final ten.

My daughter hotly denies this. Points to them still wearing pinky rings (as seen on the cover of the upcoming boygenius record), as well as a lack of any statement regarding their relationship, as proof that they're still together. I have no dog in this fight, but my daughter feels pretty strongly about this, for whatever reason.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Jamie Lee Curtis finding out she was nominated:

"THIS IS WHAT SURPRISE LOOKS LIKE! One of my oldest besties texted me at 5:15 that she was sitting in front of my house and did I want company watching the announcements. There she was in the pitch black, freezing, cold in a parka. She came in and sat with me.... I didn't even realize she took pictures. The first is the moment of hearing my name, and then the thrill of my friend, Stephanie's @stephaniehsuofficial name, and the rest of the nominations and then the best thing of all, a loving embrace for my husband. No filters. No fakery. Just the truth of a moment of joy captured by a friend."
Personally, I'm glad JLC's 2022 will most be remembered for Everything, Everywhere All At Once instead of Halloween Ends

So you're "Chunk" after all this time. The secret is out, although I always had my suspicions.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Ten movies seems like way too much. Avatar looks like it's only in there because of a contractual obligation.

I'm not pleased for the Jamie Lee Curtis nomination. I was hoping for a bigger surprise like Dolly De Leon for Triangle Of Sadness.

Glass Onion and Top Gun in the adapted category seems strange to me, even though I get the rule that sequels go into that category. I'm scratching my head trying to remember what sequels were ever nominated for script (other than Godfather 2 which was adapted from a book). Borat 2, one of the After Midnight movies, what else?

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

ELVIS has 8 Oscar nominations!!!

best costume design
best sound
best makeup and hairstyling
best production design
best film editing
best cinematography
best actor
best picture

Bulter would be a breath of fresh air compared to last year's Best Actor Winner.

Off the top of my head, Henry Fonda is a winner as is Jane, and Peter also was once nominated.

Correction: I see you say both parents. Never mind.

Sort of. This kind of stuff has probably gone on behind the scenes since Oscar began,it's just out in the open now in the social media age. Carol Kane for example for her Hester Street nomination went door to door trying to get people to watch her film since it had no big studio backing.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

Regarding Top Gun, remember the first movie was based off a magazine article. And the family of the Pilot who the article is based on sued Paramount for Maverick because they claim they weren’t properly paid for the rights to the sequel. So technically Maverick is based off that source material.

Re: 2023 Academy Awards

That's the part that's being decided. It's based on characters from Top Gun who were in a movie adapted from a licensed magazine article but not in the article itself.

On one hand, they're invented characters. On the other hand, no article, no Top Gun.
