MaXXXine (2024, D: Ti West) -- X sequel -- S: Mia Goth

EXCLUSIVE: Director Ti West tonight unveiled to Toronto viewers at the Midnight Madness premiere of Pearl that there will be a third installment of his hit cult favorite franchise that began with X. Deadline sniffed out that there was a third movie, that will be called MaXXXIne from A24. We are able to give Deadline readers an exclusive look at the teaser unveiled moments ago to attendees of the premiere of Pearl. The teaser played at the end of the movie.

Mia Goth will be back and reprising one of the two roles she played in X. It follows Maxine (Goth), after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame setting out to make it as an actress in 1980’s Los Angeles. The film hasn’t yet been shot but is on a fast track after being greenlit by A24. It all stems from X, which launched Goth as the survivor of a porn shoot that goes awry when their hosts in rural Texas see what they are doing and the cast and crew ends up fighting for their lives. West wrote the script.

After making its North American debut tonight, Pearl opens nationwide Friday, September 16. It is a prequel set decades before the grisly events of X. Goth returns as the future psycho Pearl, here a starry-eyed farm girl with a short fuse and a deadly ambition on her way to becoming a memorable murderess.

Here is the MaXXXine teaser:

MaXXXine is produced by A24, Jacob Jaffke and Ti West and executive produced by Goth. Additional producers include Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss.

Which proves to show that not everything should be a franchise.

X was good but vastly overheralded IMO. There was literally nothing new there, other than the conceit of the Slasher and the Final Girl portrayed by the same actress.

re: MaXXXine (2024, D: Ti West) -- X sequel -- S: Mia Goth

While West remained tight-lipped about what we can expect from this upcoming sequel, he did say this: “What I can tell you is that we’re going to catch up with Maxine. And we’re going to find out what she’s up to. The way that X is a movie that is informed by and affected by independent exploitation auteur Americana and 1970s cinema, and Pearl is perhaps affected by the Golden Age of Hollywood and the glitz and glamor of cinema, MaXXXine will be more about within the industry itself and the boom of VHS.”

They're having some kind of on-line casting call, asking people to submit videos of them re-enacting the fight scene from the end of X

I guess you got to go to New Zealand where X was filmed? Website doesn't say where to go.

Big cast for this one:

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.

Good on him. I don't always love his movies but I enjoy his style and the fact he seems to be gaining some traction.

Edit: I completely forgot he directed Cabin Fever 2

I agree that everything doesn't need to be a franchise (and I hope MaXXXine is the final film in the series), but I disagree with your sentiment on X. For one thing, the fact that Mia Goth played both Maxine and Pearl wasn't even revealed till the closing credits, so the viewer's mind is made up on liking the movie or not long before the reveal of the surprise concept. And the fact that there's nothing new (again, agree) is exactly what made it so enjoyable; it's an old school Final Girl movie, and I can't remember the last good one of those.

Movies don't always need to be innovative. If they take a concept that's been done before, but we haven't seen in a while, that is more than enough.

I disagree that X had nothing new. I think the killer being an elderly woman filled with longing and regret (aside from being a nut) and the husband's willingness to protect her brought an emotional depth to the story you don't often find in horror.

I only found X decent and Pearl meh, but I respect and applaud the project as a whole and cheer for both Ti and Mia. I also love anytime horror and passionate people experience success.
I'll watch this one too.

The budget for this one's pretty enormous compared to the previous two. I heard some of Downtown LA got transformed just for this. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, I could understand. But this one's surprising!

X could have been great if it played on one note. It was all over the place.

Maxxxine looks like it might be the best one of the 3. Hope it is.

I thought X was decent, but Pearl was great. By coincidence, I finally sat down and watched them for the first time (back to back) the same day MaXXXine began filming. Wasn't that familiar with Mia Goth, but she impressed me enough with that monologue that I might check this one out in theaters.

I wanted to like X but was fairly disappointed with it. I haven’t watched Pearl yet.

My exact thoughts. X was OK but nothing special. Pearl was fantastic. Let's see how they round it out.

I thought X was just OK. Then, after I watched Pearl and followed it up with another viewing of X, I thought X was great. Definitely got me interested for MaXXXine. (Maybe they should have been released in chronological order?)

I suspect that might have ruined the surprise that Goth played Pearl in X. I like the idea of realizing it’s the same actress at the end (harder to do now that it’s been out a while, of course), then seeing her play the young Pearl (in a knockout performance) in the second film, then circling back to revisit Maxine in a new setting. As much as I hope they cap it at three films, part of me wonders if they’d be able to find another new direction for a fourth one (depends on the characters I guess). An X cinematic universe perhaps.

Too bad this isn't coming out in 2023. Hopefully Q1 2024.

Looking back at the pic I posted in May, I wonder if this one will be influenced at all by the Angel trilogy.

There were some reports that it was going to be "a good old whodunit slasher." https://www.screamhorrormag.com/ti-w...dunit-slasher/

Can’t wait for this. Really liked the first two, especially X.
