In a way, you can kind of draw that conclusion for yourself if you watch Prometheus and Alien. Prometheus only takes place about 20-40 years before Alien, and the ship they find in Alien is allegedly 100s of years old. So it can be presumed the Engineers/Jockeys were making their weapons one of which was the xenomorph and the one they found in Alien was a failed attempt to transport them to Earth . David's version was basically a knock-off he made with what he found of Engineer technology and science.

That makes sense, especially since a xenomorph is clearly depicted in a mural seen in Prometheus (that was also used for one of the posters).

You even see facehuggers impregnating humanoid hosts at the bottom of the mural.

Reviews are trickling in. Rottentomatoes hasn't gotten the blurbs all up but apparently 89% with 54 reviews so far.

"Inventive" is high praise for a franchise this old

Yeah, I looked at the reviews last night and while they're not all positive, there's enough nuance there that I'm thinking this could be fun.

And I have no idea how I could record and post it, but I get ads on Facebook mobile for this movie, and it even does a little scrolling gif thing that shows where this takes place in the main timeline (it doesn't include the two AVP movies but it does include Pro and Cov and it shows Romulus right between Alien and Aliens. Pretty nifty to be honest.

JoBlo gave it a 7/10. It seems their only issues were related to the
Spoiler:
CGI used for a secret character and said character's ties to Prometheus/Alien Covenant.

If it's what I think, then I would wager that's Scott's contribution to the movie.

Pretty pumped for this, seeing the first Imax showing! Again I'm hoping it's not a gore-fest.(I'd like to take my dad to it next week if it's somewhat of a tame R rating) I have an idea of potential tie-ins they could do from the first two films which would be very cool - I'm guessing this takes place closer to Aliens than Alien.

Sorry for being harsh on ya. I'm 42, and I get it, life can make getting out to a theater tough, but I just love movies and everything about them so much so I'm just a big advocate for wanting people to go to them because I always fear they will eventually close because people just want to wait for streaming.

Fede's resume is . . . meh . . . full of slasher gore films.

And that could hopefully be why he is a perfect choice to do this flick. Essentially the xenomorph is just a slasher chasing the crew around and knocking them off.

Side note: I've seen a few tweets from people who saw this already referring to the game Dead Space as a sorta reference to how this movie is. I love that game so I'm super hyped now.

Let's just say that if you're assumption and mine are the same, from what I've heard, we are wrong.

Spoiler-free review:
Very good, but not quite great.
Fresh kills are always an Alien staple and this movie delivers on that. I’ll talk about my favourite one in the spoiler thread.

Unfortunately, aside from a couple characters, nobody is interesting at all. Motivations are a bit vague, and there’s little for the audience to connect with.
And those last 20 minutes are… something.

The ‘secret’ in the spoilers posts above was spoiled for me by simply looking at the IMDb listing for the movie, but I’ll just say.
(fairly mild spoiler)
Spoiler:
it’s not a third act spoiler, and something that comes up within the first half, if not the first third. It’s also not quite the character that it appears to be, which will make immediate sense when you watch it.

Overall, I give this 3.5 cattle prods out of 5.

my unofficial rankings:
Alien
Alien: Covenant
Prometheus / Aliens
Alien 3
Alien: Romulus
Alien: Resurrection

Just finished re-watching the first Alien last night . Going to see Romulus this afternoon. Expectations have lowered a bit since the initial buzz, but hope it's still got enough good stuff for me to enjoy.

I'll see it. I have more faith in Alvarez than in Scott. I thought Prometheus was complete poop.

I think you nailed the review here. I am with you although overall Id say a 3 out of 5. Didnt do much new or add any real intrigue. This franchise has had nothing but mostly garbage since Aliens so this film being NOT garbage gives it bonus cred. Final act was, well, whatever. Not sure if Id ever watch it again though. The first two films are classics and I watch them yearly. Dunno if Id bother again with this but I encourage people to see it. A lot of people really liked it.

Update - the third act is a mess, mostly. That hurts it.

I followed the instructions and led me to this page.

And then the next page leads me to a form that requires me to either identify myself or my client as the affected party. Thanks your making this easy YouTube!-rolleyes-

Clipping out the first part so it doesn't display here...

I reported it but it doesn't really let you pick a close reason why. Best I could do was spam/misleading.

At least thru the iOS YouTube app (I'm signed in), it was two clicks and a 'thank you for reporting'. Immediately got an email confirmation.

Someone must've figured it out cos now the video is gone. Hate to be a narc, but scrap like that does no good, even if most won't see it that way.
