Alien: Romulus (2024, D: Alvarez, P: Scott)

Your screams in space will be heard if Fede Alvarez has anything to say about it.

The filmmaker behind Don’t Breathe, and 2013’s remake of Evil Dead has been tapped to write and direct an original standalone Alien feature for 20th Century Studios.

Ridley Scott, who directed the original sci-fi horror movie released in 1979 and returned for two 21st century installments, will produce via his Scott Free banner. The project is intended to be made for Hulu as part of 20th Century’s ambitions to make more than 10 movies a year for the Disney-owned streaming service.

Alvarez’s take is being kept deep inside the studio’s chest, but sources describe it as unconnected to the previous movies.

According to sources, Alvarez is a rabid fan of the franchise and casually pitched a take to Scott many years ago. The idea remained implanted in Scott’s brain until late last year when he called Alvarez out of the blue and asked him if the younger filmmaker was still up for it. Alvarez didn’t have to be asked twice.

20th Century picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch,” said division president Steve Asbell. “It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.”

If his recent Texas Chainsaw movie is any indication, I will pass on this. Cool that it will exist though.

He didn't direct TCM.

This could go either way, though.

Prometheus was shit but I quite enjoyed Alien: Covenant so I’m open to try a new Alien movie.

I’ve only seen three of Fede Alvarez’s movies. None of them were particularly great. Don’t Breathe was ok, Evil Dead and The Girl in the Spider’s Web were completely forgettable.

There hasn't been a good Alien movie since 1986, and I question whether or not Disney has it in them to make a good Alien movie, especially with how they shepherded Star Wars.

With how molested and debased the Alien franchise has been, I'd argue a good one probably CAN'T be made.

Same with Terminator, Predator, Halloween. They're all OVER as franchises. But studios keep thinking they can draw a little more blood from them. But they've all been creatively bled dry.

Aren't there a lot of good Alien, Predator, etc stories in the graphic novels? What exactly (besides Hollywood hubris) is keeping them from adapting one of them?

I've liked most of the Alien movies, I even have a soft spot for Covenant. I'm sure this will be worth buying a used copy of the bluray down the road.

Alien 3 is pretty good, but my biggest issue with that one is that right away they made the 2nd movie completely pointless.

Aside from that major faux pas the rest of the movie has a lot going for it. It's not great, but it's got some great elements, and, overall, it's fairly good.

I love the series, but Alien Covenant was the worst IMO, so I am definitely interested in seeing how this turns out.

This. "Alien Covenant" was garbage. I'll watch another film, but really? A+ Director!?

I'm totally lost with these Alien movies. Weren't they making a Covenant 2 or spin-off or whatever?

IMO it's one of the greatest horror movies of the last few decades. So I'm up for giving Alvarez a shot more.

Yeah, I sort of remember at one point they were going to make a third entry in the Prometheus/Covenant continuity, but I don't think it ever came close to crawling out of development hell.

And Neil Blomkamp was going to make Alien 5, and that didn't go anywhere beyond a bit of concept art.

So much vaporware, I'm kind of skeptical as to whether this new one will get made.

I don't like Covenant anyway, but still. Confusing direction they are going with this franchise.

We do not know yet what direction it is going. They have quite a few comics that are isolated, that they can take inspiration from.

This series died with Hicks and Newt. That was the fail. The series could have carried on with Newt as the lead.

I liked all Alien movies more or less, but I didn't love any since part three, I never understood the hate for it. I hope they come up with a good idea, but like Terminator they fail to bring back the old magic everytime.

I like the Back Burster scene in Covenant... that's about it. Two perfect opportunities to make some amazing prequels with connections to Aliens/LV-426 and they're garbage.

And the prequels died with Elizabeth Shaw. Thank you Ridley for killing her off before the sequel ever began -rolleyes- And instead of finishing what you started, you gave us a rehash of the very first "Alien". And a really bad one at that. For that reason alone, I'd be happy if he had nothing to do with any of these films again. And beyond happy he was only a producer on "Blade Runner 2049".

Disney is going to milk these franchises like crazy.

And killed off screen to make it worse.

She died in a very ****'d up way too. While I don't like how her character was treated, Ridley does have balls for doing that to a main protagonist all of a sudden.

Somewhere there is a balance sheet containing all Alien movies. And these must still be in the black. Otherwise, they'd be chasing bad money with good money.

I enjoyed Prometheus and Covenant. They both had some great moments and adventurous stories.

To this new project, I say: yea sure why not.
