X (2022, D: Ti West) S: Snow, Goth, Mescudi, Ortega

Finally rented this. Like West’s other films before it, I ended up finding it mediocre it was his best yet. Too long, not scary save for 2-3 scenes/sequences, but really well acted. I have Regal Unlimited so I’ll likely see Pearl out of curiosity. If that doesn’t entertain me more than this, I’m done paying attention to West as a filmmaker.

I decided to make it a true double feature, and re-watched X after seeing Pearl earlier today. I have to admit, there weren't a lot of scenes that felt different having seen the prequel, if anything, I was wondering why Pearl seemed so prudish and judgmental of the kids. But one line did strike me; after
is killed, Pearl mentions to her husband

This is on Showtime or Paramount+ or whichever, but that's how I finally saw it. I liked it, though my response as I watched it was a lot like Hazel Motes, is that all this is? Oh, it is? Oh, okay. And that's fine. I think A24 now has a rep with me of a twist coming and that isn't always the case, even with their horror / thriller / creepy movies. I liked it, may watch it again.
One of my kids loved Wednesday, and while I'm tempted to show them Jenna Ortega's fate here, this is not a movie for kids. Dare I say, I'm not sure at what point we'd ever be excited to watch this one together even when they're an adult!

Some movies aren't meant to be watched as a family, and one about a very horny, sexually repressed octogenarian invading a porn shoot may be on that shortlist.

Hmm, when you put it that way, I'm surprised some "influencer" family hasn't used watching movies like this together as the basis to start a YouTube channel yet.

Just saw this via Netflix. Stumbled across it and never heard of it.
Really impressive and I don’t even like 70s/80s horror genre.
Some gruesome killings, small cast, and creepy elderly characters.

Didn't just stumble across it, but finally caught this on the Flix of the Net. "Not for me" as their rating scale provided.
Boring. Well made. Fairly well acted. Slashers and TCM ripoffs are not my cup of tea, but given the hype for this I rolled the dice. Meh.
