That "inn" they were in had great production design, but they squandered it. In the Valley of Violence was another film that was more of a comedy than a full-on western. It had a great cast but sucked overall.
This feels so harsh after reading Ti's letter above.

I liked both The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. Haven’t seen any of Ti West’s other films though.

X sounds interesting. I hadn’t heard much about it, but I saw Stuckmann’s review and it sounds like it could be good.

I'm not really sure I understand the purpose of having Mia Goth in the makeup. The whole movie I kept expecting for there to be some sort of explanation or twist... and was a bit underwhelmed when it never came. Maybe that is something the prequel will delve into? It reminded me of the Suspiria remake (which also had Mia Goth) that did something similar, but for no real reason.

The trailer for Pearl looks even wilder than this.

to Brittany Snow for going all out with the material.

This is the third film in three months I've seen with Jenna Ortega... and I am not complaining.

Owen Campbell looks ridiculously similar to Lou Taylor Pucci.

My screening was a little too loud, but the movie itself was very good. Not amazing by any means, but I enjoyed it

I'm only aware of Jenna Ortega because she was announced to play Wednesday Addams in her very own series. Ever since then, she's been appearing everywhere.

I first saw Jenna Ortega in The Babysitter sequel, but really fell in love with her in Scream (2022). She was good in this as well, but her character didn't touch me the way Tara did. I hope she's got a nice career ahead of her.

Saw this earlier today. Really enjoyed it!

Oozes style, has a solid cast and has a particularly bonkers final act.

Re: X (2022, D: Ti West) S: Snow, Goth, Mescudi, Ortega

Just got back from seeing it. I don't normally go out of my way to see these smaller movies, but I had a good time with this one. Dark, gritty and dirty throwback to old school horror movies. Some good and unexpectedly gruesome kills. I loved the way it was filmed. It felt like a movie that was made in the 1970s.

Brittany Snow getting down and dirty and nasty.

There's a few spots that made me kind of uncomfortable. But, that is a good thing, because the movie did it's job:

Spoiler:

Wayne stepping on the giant nail

The old woman molesting Maxine.

and the old couple banging. I really did not need to or expect to see that

I was only with 3 other people in my showing and they bailed before the teaser for "Pearl" Only reason I even heard about needing to stay through the credits was from Stuckmann's review.

Need to check this one out. I loved House of the Devil, and liked both The Innkeepers and The Sacrament.

I was pretty disappointed by this. The way the film was set up, I don’t know, I kept expecting the film to be more than it was.

Eventually it got to a point where I realized l, oh so it IS only that.

But it had some good atmosphere and gore so it wasn’t a complete waste.

3/5

Seriously? My theatre had no trailer at the end, and I stayed until the credits rolled and the house lights came up. I always linger in the theatre (I like to watch the credits and it takes me awhile to get my coat, pick up all my shit ect), I wasn't expecting there to be anything after the credits. I'm glad I didn't know it was missing, otherwise I would have been annoyed.

I enjoyed it a lot, specifically because this seemed to be an "exploitation" movie in the truest sense. Most of us feel glum about getting old, and this movie exploited those feelings of unease we have, feeling that we know we shouldn't. I liked that it was unapologetically poking at those nasty ideas that "old people are fucking gross!"

Surprised to learn the dude was Kid Cudi. Based on Bill and Ted 3, I thought he was incapable of acting, but he gave a solid performance. Never thought about the actor, just saw the character.

I thought the old woman make-up was better, because it was only in the final half hour of the movie I got the sense she was a younger woman in make-up. Cool to hear that it was Mia Goth. I liked that they didn't make a bigger thing about it, just kept it as "if-you-got-you-got-it, if not it's interesting trivia when you find out".

Re: X (2022, D: Ti West) S: Snow, Goth, Mescudi, Ortega

I dug this a lot. Ti West has a knack for slow burn, and this film is great at that. It's a solid follow-up to his other horror flicks, and I'm looking forward to Pearl.

The aerial shot of
Spoiler:
the girl swimming back to the dock, with the gator slowly following her.

was just one of many well-framed tense moments. I love that stuff.

Weird that guy-who-does-videos-in-front-of-his-movie-shelves did a plot synopsis for this. I thought folks said he was done doing that kind of Content.

Re: X (2022, D: Ti West) S: Snow, Goth, Mescudi, Ortega

I saw this last night - in a theater with all of 5 other people.

I thought it was excellent. I'm not a big fan of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", but they captured that low-budget vibe in the early moments.

Brittany Snow's character, who was loud and brash, was annoying. I'm sure that was intentional.

Mia Goth, with an English-Brazilian heritage, played "Texas poor" SO well.

The musical score was, to quote the era, "out of sight, man!" Very creepy and unsettling, then changing over to high-intensity music of the period.

It's not going to win any Academy Awards, but a solid 4+/5.

I saw this yesterday and liked it a great deal. I've enjoyed everything I've seen from Ti West, but I really felt like this was his best effort yet. The late 70s vibe was perfect and I felt the presence of West's influences.I am genuinely looking forward to seeing Pearl, hopefully later this year.

He doesn’t do as many reviews anymore, but he’s not completely done. His thing now is more that he only reviews films he wants to talk about and has mostly positive feelings towards. He doesn’t want to give out negative reviews knowing how difficult it is to make a film.

Ended up seeing this a second time, and it really held up well on a repeat viewing. This might make its way into my group of semi-annual Halloween time viewing.

I noticed a little detail I missed the first time that made me chuckle:
Spoiler:
When Kid Cudi gets up in the night and drinks from the container of milk in the fridge, the MISSING person notice on the carton includes a picture of the dead hippie we saw chained up in the basement.

The scene with Kid Cudi standing naked in the doorway - shown in silhouette - made me feel .... inadequate

I can’t imagine I will enjoy a horror movie in 2022 more than this one.

Loved it.

The late 1970’s scenery and vibe along with the story and acting was top notch.

Decent throwback horror flick, but absolutely nothing we haven't seen before a thousand time. That's fine, I guess, I like this genre, but it won't make my best of horror list this year.
