Caught a matinee today and thought the film was great. The 2 hour runtime flew by.

But I agree it's hard to believe Ghostbusters were forgotten.
That's sort of the problem with the Ghostbusters franchise, and has been since Ghostbusters 2.

There's an idea in the movies that they have to be underdogs. It's where Ghostbusters 2 fucked up. In the first movie, it ended with them being these big heroes, and then, a few years later, they're losers doing kids' birthday parties. It couldn't just pick up the arc from the original film, where they're full-on Ghostbusters out busting ghosts. They had to revert to being underdogs. And Afterlife picks up this thread as well.

I liked it but it was heartbreaking seeing Ramis on screen over 7 years after his death
But having it not based in NY was a mistake IMO

Lots of post around the internet comparing this to The Force Awakens so does that mean the sequel is going to be about Slimer hiding out on a deserted island and pouting?

If they filmed it in NY, the budget would have been twice as much. Pretty obvious they filmed it in Canada to save on costs and get tax credits. The 2016 version had a huge budget and lost money.

Caught it this afternoon and overall, I liked it. Definitely lacking in originality, but made up for it with some pretty good humor and heart.

Took my folks to see it, Imax screen - wasn't filmed in imax but the sound was really cranked! Like it a lot, it's a nice trilogy capper...and I didn't think the throwbacks were too much at all.

You could definitely feel the lower budget (no extras anywhere stood out a bit, and few ghosts) but that's fine...and a 2 hour movie - I remember when they used to make those!

Where was Slimer? I kept myself spoiler free but that's the one thing I expected more than anything else.

A couple sequences felt a little long.. taking the Ecto 1 through town and the prison plot point.

Was not expecting so much Ramis, but what a great send off.

Re: Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021, D: J. Reitman) -- S: Coon, Rudd -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I've been thinking about his movie in the past 2 days since I've seen it. This was a touching movie, all with being fun at the same time. The character of Egon was developed so much while only appearing as a ghost, having led a sad and lonely life since the events of the first two movies until his death in the intro. Phoebe was a great character as well and McKenna Grace is a good actress for the role. Being a Stranger Things fan, seeing Finn Wolfhard in this movie after running around in Season 2 as a Ghostbuster on Halloween was fun. His character, while likeable, wasn't really the focus of the movie, but he did okay with what he had to do. I really enjoyed Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon also, but I'm a little haunted by the dark fate of Egon Spengler and his friendship with Ray and the other Ghostbusters. But his actions still fit his character very well. I hope we get a followup sequel or two, but if not, this is a great way to end things. The people in my theater cheered at the end when the OG Busters showed up. Good time at the movies and the sequel we should have gotten in 2016 instead of that stupid feminist remake.

This wasn't a perfect film...but it was darn near perfect. I would have been a great movie if the OGs didn't appear at all - adding them was just icing on the cake. I loved it. It very much like an 80s film - develop your story and characters FIRST, then give us the big F/X scenes...so nice to see a movie made like this.

Opening BO numbers ($40.5mil) are better than projected.

That’s a little less than the 2016 film without COVID… but this has half the budget.

I wonder when fan/audience reactions and reviews are going to start hitting rottentomatoes? The 2016 got close to 400 registered reviews while this one only had 92 or so when it was released. I didn't know the 2016 cost so much, but then again, this took place almost entirely in a small town and the FX were used sparingly to allow for character focus, which is where I think the movie truly excelled.

Jason Reitman got permission from Ramis' family to use his likeness.

I'd like to see a bonus feature on how they recreated Egon in the movie.

Yes, I've seen it before on the DVD or Blu-ray or both as a deleted scene.

I think that was the point of where they put her name in the credits, it gave our theater a great reaction!

I thought of something in Ghostbusters: Afterlife that was also in Ghostbusters II, and that's Ray's Occult Books. There was even a scene at it in both movies, so that's a link.

I'm assuming they paid his estate what he would've made? (thought the same with Carrie Fisher for TROS) It's great that they gave the OK but they should've been paid as well.

Really loved it, and I really wanna see it again! Is it just me, or did it feel like maybe they cut stuff for time? The story felt very fulfilling but at the same time, I can't help but feel something was missing? Maybe I'm just overthinking it.

I thought it was unrealistic. I don't know man... how would the company that makes Stay Puft marshmallows still be making them after their mascot rampaged NYC?

jk, I loved it! Great homage to the original. It's not really a standalone movie, but that's okay for a kid like me in the 80's that had every Ghostbuster toy imaginable! There may be a few nitpicks, but certain things had to happen to get the plot going. Mostly a 12 year old fixing a back-worn positron collider and knowing how to use all the ghost-catching tools, and Mr. Gruberson thinking it was a good idea to open a ghost trap, even while knowing what happened to NY in the 80s.

Saw this yesterday in IMAX with a friend. Loved it.

McKenna Grace steals every scene she's a part of and I loved her pairing with Logan Kim (Podcast). Enjoyed the casting outside that as well, though the script doesn't always give all characters interesting things to say or do.

It was hard to not smile like an idiot during any scene involving the Gunner Seat in the Echo-1 or R/C Ghost Trap.

I too just found out today that was Olivia Wilde playing Gozer. I never even thought about it while watching, just assumed they got another model look alike. I find it interesting how all of this movie's haters are upset that it dismisses the 2016 movie lead by women, even though this movie also has a female lead. Like the most recent Quiet Place movie, this does a great job of showing how to write strong female characters without taking the whole "woke" route. Also, the humor managed to work without going into screwball comedy territory and having jokes catered to the lowest common denominator. Another area where the 2016 version failed. The only area in which I feel the 2016 movie actually succeeded was in the special FX department, but even they looked a bit forced.

Very enjoyable, loved the casting and thought Egon's appearance was handled fantastically! Not having him talk was the 100% best choice. The style they used to bring him back looked great as well, I'd love to see a special feature on how they managed to do this so well. Even if they don't continue, and it looks like they are, this was a nice way to bridge the eras.

I also don't think they retconned part 2, IMO they were talking about Gozer related events on that "calendar", Part 2 didn't involve Gozer.

Took the family today and we really liked it. I thought it was a good blend of fun and nostalgia. The Egon stuff at the end really got me choked up. I would watch more entries into this universe!
