For an adult, sure, the concept is easy to grasp. For a young kid, explaining that it’s essentially double make believe was a circular and silly conversation.

It also adds an extra layer that, by its nature, raises the bar for suspension of disbelief. Movies typically strive to make you live in their world while you’re watching them. The angle they took here tries to make the audience live in Toy Story’s world, where the movie you’re watching inspired a character you’re already familiar with. It instantly lowers the stakes.

I almost think it's the opposite. For an adult who's invested in Toy Story or whatever, it's hard to justify continuity. Kids don't care. When the Buzz Lightyear cartoon came out, did the kids go "wait, this Buzz isn't a toy?" When Rescue Rangers came out did we go "wait a second, Chip and Dale can't talk, and they certainly aren't detectives, I'm boycotting this cartoon?" No we were like "cool."

I guess the caveat being kids raised by continuity nerds, I guess.

I don’t think as a kid I would have thought about it that much. Probably would have just watched and liked it or not. I think a lot of the adults are overthinking it.

Hey, I bought those! Sadly, I didn't get the complete line. I do have a pretty cool sandworm though.

It would have made more sense as a short Disney+ animated series or a special feature on another Toy Story.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Lightyear (2022) V: Chris Evans

It's surprising that Tim Allen didn't have a voice cameo.
Spoiler:
The character of the older version of Buzz actually could have been reverse-engineered during story development by thinking, 'How could we get Tim Allen included in this?'. After seeing that, I feel like there were was more going on behind the scenes than simple creative decisions.

Thinking back, I'm also surprised by
Spoiler:
the "killing" of the second Sox. Yes, it was just a robot, but in a movie aimed at children they aren't going to understand the distinction between real organisms and AI robots. The movie just moved on without any kind of reaction. For all I know, the filmmakers intended that to be funny.

That's awesome you recognized this. I was scratching my head when they described Lightyear as "It does not follow a traditional, linear narrative approach to storytelling". I was like, Sure, it keeps jumping through time, but it isn't like it's a Terrence Malick film or something.

I don’t really care either way but I like the idea of Allen voicing Buzz but in a voice and tone he didn’t use for the other Toy Story movies. Allen voicing a more serious, less bombastic Buzz could have been interesting.

BTW, I haven’t seen this new movie yet. I’m sure Evans does a perfectly serviceable job.

Having seen and highly enjoyed the movie, I think recasting Buzz worked, and
Spoiler:
there is a significant role that should have been Tim Allen
.

I would agree with that and I’m sad they missed the opportunity.

Disney should just admit they were wrong, get Tim Allen to rerecord the Buzz dialogue in a few days, and put that version out in theaters.

Give me a break. They don't need Tim Allen because once again : His character is not in this movie.
The character that Chris Evans plays has the same name but isn't a toy and doesn't behave in the same way as that character. I think it would be more confusing if Allen played him since his entire personality is different here.

Am I the only one who read this in Tom Hank’s high anxiety Woody voice?

“This Buzz is not a toooy!”

Now that Andy's an adult, hopefully something like this exists for him to waste his money on instead of those cheap ass kids' toys:

I saw a BO prediction for $80 million but it only managed $50 million.

Yeah, it opened in line with Pixar originals, not a Pixar sequel.

Disney would be better off just selling off Pixar at this point. Their Disney Animation studio does modern 3D animated movies just as well now.

We saw it today and liked it quite a bit. My seven year old son wasn't confused by the story, didn't even flinch at the supposed controversial scene, and made no mention of Lightyear having a different voice. What a wonderful time of life just being a kid.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Lightyear (2022) V: Chris Evans

I just got back from seeing it. I thought it was really good. Sox stole the show. He was hilarious and had a lot of funny lines. I don't understand why this has sparked so much confusion or outrage The plot was pretty easy for me to understand. I thought it was a really beautifully animated science fiction adventure. And people making a big deal about Chris Evans voicing Buzz over Tim Allen? I mean C'Mon.

BTW, did any of you stick around for the 3 post credit scenes? 2 were jokey, but the last one teased something more about a character in the movie.
