I plan to see this Friday.
I read Scott Mantz’s tweet about it last week. He said it’s good, but not amazing.
I also read this was banned in a few countries like Saudi Arabia because of an animated same sex kiss.

Buzz isn't an interesting character. He worked in Toy Story because he was a fish out of water, if you put him in his element he's probably as exciting as watching paint dry. Zapp Brannigan he is not.

Sounds like the perfect “wait for it to hit Disney+” movie.

My interest is waning on this as well... the 'good but not great' reviews, that this is a movie within a movie(correct?) also just seems to make it feel more disposable.

It is not a movie within a movie. It is just the movie from 1995 that Andy watched. No fourth wall breaking.

So why did they never have toys of the other characters in the movie? Surely, Andy would have wanted those but they seem to not be available other than Zurg.

Toy Story 2: The other Buzz from the toy store who thinks he's part of Star Command
Toy Story 3: Buzz switched to Spanish Mode and, also, him reverting back to thinking he is part of Star Command
In Toy Story 4 this device isn't used but he has a lot less screen time

As for why we don’t see those other toys in Al’s Toy Barn, who knows. I suspect the plot holes from the back story retconning is going to bite them in the end.
Then again, would kids care?

I guess we don't need a "Reviews thread" for this movie. Looking back in the past, animated movies have never really been ultra popular here and they aren't exactly a huge "water cooler" topic with big surprises.

Saw a late showing with my girlfriend last night. Really damn good actually. I was surprised by how much I liked it. Very cute and a fun story but still has the heart of a Pixar film. Sox (the cat) does steal the show, but I liked all the characters really.

I still don't get why Disney didn't put up the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon on Disney Plus prior to this movie coming out. I realize it would make no sense in continuity but you'd think they'd still want to milk the character. Instead they put up a featurette that reportedly spoils the entire movie.

Aside from the opening where they say this is the movie Andy watched that made him want a Buzz toy the movie has zero to do with Toy Story. It’s not a prequel. It’s a movie that was made in the fictional universe of Toy Story but now actually exists.

Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear the toy. Chris Evans is Buzz Lightyear, from that movie that inspired the toy.
“Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear the toy, and he’s the embodiment of Buzz Lightyear the toy. We weren’t making a Toy Story movie. We’re making Buzz Lightyear’s movie, the Lightyear movie. And so first and foremost, we just needed to have a different person playing that Lightyear, separate from the toy. And then, you’re looking at taking a side character and making them the protagonist of his own movie.
So, you need somebody who’s going to be very well-rounded. You need somebody who can do drama and comedy, comedy that doesn’t undercut the stakes of the character. You need somebody who can express pathos and have genuine concern for their own safety and experiencing conflict and guilt. And, you make this huge laundry list, and they’re like, well, Chris, do we have anybody else we could ask? No, Chris. Let’s ask Chris.”

WTF??? Seriously? How does Evans "sound" more heroic? What a joke.
I am glad I don't have younger kids I would have to take to this...I would be distracted beyond belief by it not being Tim Allen.

Just got back from seeing this. It’s okay. Nothing amazing but well made. I love the cat, Socks is seriously the best! Evans does a fine job. Sometimes you even forget it’s a different Buzz talking. That said, he plays the role differently, with more emotion, feeling regret, not so “Committed”. I don’t mind the distinction, but I think for continuity sake, it might have been better if there were a single point in the movie (even if it were right at the beginning) where Evan’s Lightyear acted close to exactly like Tim Allen’s Buzz. In the end it’s not a deal breaker, but it’s something I noticed.
The reason a lot of people are going to freak out about this is that a main character has a happy and healthy same-sex relationship and raises a family like that. I have no problem with it at all. I think that kind of representation is good and absolutely won’t harm any child’s psyche. But there’s no denying it was a bold choice and a LOT of people are going to have an issue with it. This isn’t like previous very subtle nods. This is very clearly two women who love each other and raise a family together. It’s not made to be a big deal, or take up a lot of screen time. But this is a highly-anticipated family movie and the “Don’t Say Gay” crowd is going to flip.
