Mister Frost (1990)
This is an underrated subtle horror gem starring Jeff Goldblum. Why did it never go to DVD or get talked about? I don't know. But it's pretty good.
Just One of the Guys (1985)
I was surprised I never knew about this film during the actual 80s. It's actually pretty funny and entertaining.
My Bodyguard (1980)
Another gem from that decade. Despite the premise, the kids in the movie actually act like kids and not stereotypes. Matt Dillon made a convincing bully as did his bodyguard.
Over The Edge (1979)
I agree. This is a great film. I was used to watching black and chicano delinquents in films (Menace II Society, Blood In Blood Out) so it was different to see crazy ass young white thugs destroying their own community in movie form. I wasn't into the rock music of that era either so the soundtrack was refreshing. Great performances all around.
The Believer (2001)
My favorite Ryan Gosling movie. Usually I see him being the too-cool-for-school guy, but here he's crazy but also vulnerable and insecure so it's a more varied performance.
Anonymous (2011)
This movie actually got me to appreciate Shakespeare more. Great performance by the lead, and the performances of the actual plays were equally good. Best St. Crispians speech ever.

Manhattan Murder Mystery. Even a lot of "Woody Allen buffs" I've spoken to over the years only saw it once and consider it one of his lesser pictures, but while I recognize Annie Hall has more cultural and cinematic importance, I like Manhattan Murder Mystery better. There's so many lines that make me laugh out loud. There's so many fascinating story-lines going on in the subtext (considering an affair, Alan Alda's depression and alcoholism). Plus the murder mystery is genuinely tense and suspenseful (that elevator scene!). Also, the movie captures the exhilarating feeling of being out in the city late at night. There are few movies that bring me as much joy as watching this one.

I remember talking with some friends who were a little older than me who were teens in the 80s and big into movies, and they never heard of it. Yeah, that guy from "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" is in it! Nothing.

I didn't know. Finding out it was only available in Fool Screen DVD makes me feel better about my purchase. I thought I messed up and clicked the wrong format.

I have still not seen that one (added it to my Amazon queue today), but based on Jody Hill's other films and shows, I think there's some similarity in humor style. Maybe not as crass, but shares Hill's depictions of masculinity in some ways.

If Beale Street Could Talk is one of my top 3 films, but hardly gets any attention, since it didn't have an Oscar run like Barry Jenkins' previous Moonlight. I loved I Heard the Owl Call My Name, but that was a made-for-TV movie, so I get why that isn't super popular.

Perhaps a bit bored and looking for ways to narrow my movie choices, I decided to do a decade per week. I just happened to be on an 80s run last week, so it's the 90s this week. I narrowed my DVD Profiler to that decade. As I scrolled through, I was shocked how many great films I had from that time that had never received a Blu-ray release and seen to basically be forgotten. There are many I'd be happy to upgrade or revisit, some of which have already been mentioned. With that in mind, my list will just stick to the 90s.
Big Night - A big favorite of mine. Wonderful cast and the food looks incredible.
Flirting with Disaster - Another great cast, a director who went on to make more acclaimed films. I watched this one a bunch.
Citizen Ruth - Not many comedies centered on abortion, but always loved this one from Alexander Payne. Dern is great.
Opposite of Sex - Back when Ricci had curves. Always liked her in this.
Gridlock'd - Always surprised this one hasn't gotten more attention given it has Tupac in one of his last roles. Also good turns from Tim Roth and Thandie Newton.
Bob Roberts - I know Tim Robbins can be very divisive, but I
really like this documentary-style political comedy.
The Winslow Boy - Definitely a Mamet departure. I haven't seen it in years but remember really liking it.
Wag the Dog - it stars Oscar winners and still seems relevant in some ways.
The Sweet Hereafter - Beautiful but difficult to watch. Probably my favorite Egoyan film.
Quiz Show - I watched this movie a ton. There was just something about it that clicked for me.
Lone Star - John Sayles doesn't get any love.
I Shot Andy Warhol - Taylor was brilliant and the story was heavily borrowed for a season of American Horror Story.
Happiness - I did find it unsettling that I liked this film so much.
Bullets Over Broadway - Always loved this Woody Allen film and felt it was one even people who don't like him usually enjoy.

I'd also say Egoyan's Exotica is also a great, great underrated movie...

I know it was not a hit and wish it was available on Blu-ray.
A big gangsta rap fan in the early 90's and got all the references.

Yeah... This is nothing like The Art of Self-defense.
The latter is totally different (and far better...)
