The Ringer did an article for the 30th anniversary where they talk to both Arnold and Verhoeven. It reminded me how disappointed I was that we never got them re-teaming on that long gestating Crusades movie. Also, there is a video in the article from their Total Recall Rewatchables podcast.

That Crusades movie has long been an object of my fascination. Is there anywhere one can look up the unshot script, or was anything about it ever turned into a book?

Was able to watch this yesterday. I does really hold up today. Still a great movie. I caught that Melina was the girl on the screen at Recall. The fading out to white at the end to me is a hint that it may just be a dream. I know there has been debates on that over the years. I had never really paid attention to that before.

I think for the time it was a solid twist. Arnold’s such a conspicuous guy that him really being a secret agent makes sense. And they really play up the emotional factor with the plight of the mutants. And yet, all the clues are right there that this is exactly the fantasy that Quaid paid for.
And I forgot that Melina was Ticotin’s character. I do remember that. For some reason I thought that the mutant bar girl was named Melina and was also seen prior to the Rekall trip.
I regret not getting the Mars tin dvd. The regular case didn’t have the same special features.

I remember watching Gremlins 2 and then sneaking in to another screen to see Total Recall
Maybe the first time I saw a movie without paying for it.
I think I had a playboy with Sharon Stone around the same time.

I always forget this is a Verhoeven film. Even the title cards are great. Always have, always love this one. Almost forgot the Colin Ferrel one was made till I saw in Vudu when seeing if I had this in there, which I don’t and still can’t get the disc to digital to work. This and The Running Man are my 2 favs.

This is such a fun movie and really does hold up. The only effect I didn’t love was when the heads were exposed to Mars atmosphere. Always looked odd, even in theaters. Other than that it holds up so well as a chase movie, an action movie, mind fuck movie and ultimately very satisfying with whatever ending you go with in your mind. Though on the commentary by Verhoeven he kinda says what he really had in mind, though audiences, I’m sure, only thought of the syrupy sweet happy ending, which I bought into in 1990, now, I like Verhoeven’s idea. Just really good. Great characters with Arnie, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox, Sharon Stone. Which Verhoeven says on commentary she was wary of nudity in this one, but then he got back at her (not in mean spirited way), with Basic Instinct he says. Thought that was funny. Really enjoy this one.

Anyone pick up the new Total Recall 4K UHD disc that came out a few weeks ago? It's currently only $13 at Amazon.

Anyways, the point of this bump is on the 4K disc there is an excellent newly produced 1 hour documentary on the history of Carolco studios, the company that made this movie, T2, the Rambo series and such. It talks about the rise and eventual fall of the company.
I know most of you rarely have time to watch the bonus material on your discs you buy, but this is very worthy of your time. It's not some self congratulatory fluff piece either. They go into why Carolco fucked up. A lot of their movies were flat out bombs or seemed like hits, but turned out made no money. Cliffhanger being one that apparently made no money for the company.
Watch it.
