Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (D: Fowler 2022)

Tickets are now on sale for this.

There is an early Fan screening on Wednesday the 6th if you really want to see this early. However, for AMC theatres, A-List is not valid for that showing.

AMC is charging $21 for the Dolby early fan screening. I don't love the series enough to pay $21 out of pocket, so I'll catch later that weekend.

FILA is putting out Sonic shoes. They’re actually not too bad looking if you’re into having bright colored shoes.

Hopefully the score will bump up a little to at least be fresh. I’m guessing it’ll be on par or slightly better than the first.

I wouldn't have thought Jim Carrey's final two films could be Sonic 1 & 2... but he is saying he is up to retiring unless some amazing script comes along. "I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough."

Saw that as well. I always liked Carrey from his more goofy comedy roles to the ones where he expanded and showed off a different side. He’s 60 though so if he wants to be done I can’t blame him.

I wonder if there’s a third Sonic film if he would do it. That or does something happen with Robotnic where he’s not in the next film or possibly recast.

I get the weird feeling that this movie is going to do very well this weekend at the box office. Seems like there's a lot of awareness and excitement for this among kids.
How is it tracking?

I plan to take my older son to see this over the weekend. The first one may have been the last movie we saw together theatrically (I don't believe we have been to see anything since COVID first hit), and it exceeded our expectations.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (D: Fowler 2022)

I just got back from seeing this. This was the 2nd movie of my double feature today. I had a blast watching this. So much fun. Idris Elba was hilarious as Knuckles. I laughed so many times during his scenes.

Tails was a fun sidekick. This movie is probably not going to appeal to most here. It's definitely designed more for family audiences. . The auditorium I was in was filled with mostly families.

I did stay for the mid-credits scene and it does introduce another character that will likely be in Sonic 3. It brought a huge applause from my audience.

Loved the climatic sequence. Amazing special effects and it was both funny and exciting.

One issue I had was the entire wedding sequence. That was totally unnecessary. Shemar Moore was totally wasted in this movie.

Agree with both these. The visuals during the final half hour were spectacular, the dark cloud sucking up material for Robotnic to build his robot was almost too ominous for a family movie.

The entire wedding story line was junk. I don't believe a single kid is going to give a shit about that, and adults will find it insultingly stupid.

I enjoyed the first movie a whole lot more. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the novelty of it being the first time you're seeing these characters and experiencing the world building, but this one didn't have as many memorable sequences. The dance-off pales in comparison to the "bullet time" sequence in the bar in the original film.

I think this would be a fitting place for Carrey to retire, as both these films are the best comedic performances I've seen him give since the 90s. I'm not so much surprised he accepted the role, but I was surprised by how much he committed to it like he had something to prove. He's wonderful in these, would watch a third just for him.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (D: Fowler 2022)

BO is more than original estimates:
As the box office opens two films featuring high-octane speedsters this weekend, one has emerged a clear victor. Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” looks to top the charts this weekend with an impressive opening in the neighborhood of $67 million to $69 million.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (D: Fowler 2022)

Just got back from this a little bit ago. I liked it pretty well. I may have liked the first movie slightly more too if I’m honest. I liked the addition of Tails and Knuckles, but some aspects of this one I feel didn’t work as well.

It felt like a case of typical sequel syndrome where the movie felt like it had to try really hard to outdo the first film. Some of the action sequences didn’t work for me and I feel like the first film having smaller scale action was better.

Also agreed that the wedding parts slowed the film to a grinding halt. I think I would have liked it more if we got more of Sonic and Tails trying to find the Chaos Emerald to build up their friendship more.

Fun references for fans. I’m only a casual Sonic fan from some of the games, but I caught some things.

Overall still a good movie for what it is. I’m sure kids will like it.
Spoiler:
Sort of thought there would be a Shadow reference and he makes sense for the next movie.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (D: Fowler 2022)

Took my sister and her kids to this yesterday, I enjoyed it and they loved it - seems to be a very audience pleasing film. I appreciated the bigger set pieces and action in this one over the first. The bar dance off and after-wedding scene could've been handled better or cut imo. Shaving 10min off of the movie would've helped a lot. The vfx of the giant robot (I'm assuming that was a boss in the games?) was impressive.

It's also nice to see 40yr+ actors as the couple. Hadn't seen any of Tika Sumpter's work before, she'd make a great Storm!

Saw it on Friday. Really liked it for the most part, the Hawaii and dancing scenes drag a bit but otherwise the movie is crazy good

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (D: Fowler 2022)

Took my 10 y.o. daughter to see it on Saturday and we both loved it. Perfect movie sequel in terms of more of the same as the first. They didn't try to totally change the characters or go in a different direction. Great video game movie in that they stayed true to the characters in both design and personality. I absolutely loved that they used the original voice for tails. I never understood that if they aren't going in a different direction with the character there's no reason to recast them if there's a perfectly good voice actor already attached to the character. I actually didn't mind the whole wedding scene. Yeah it was totally family movieish like a daddy daycare level of goofiness. But it served to give James Marsden and Tika Sumpter something to do and largely out of the way so the main focus could be on the four video game characters, while still allowing them to be in the movie and at the end for support for Sonic.

I LOVED Jim Carrey in this. He was already back to his 90's silly side for the first one but he just totally dialed it in and went full on Jim Carrey in this sequel. They let him run away with the character and it was great. I really hope he'll be in for one more sequel. I also heard that he was willing to and actually wanted to wear a fat suit for Dr. Robotnick. But it was the movie studio said no. Maybe afraid of being accused of fat shaming? I actually really admire him for offering. He said something about giving the fans what they really want. I feel like he's always been one of those few actors that really go above and beyond for their character. Like what he had to put up with in becoming the Grinch.

Put me down for #3. But then that's it. As soon as Bigs the cat shows up I'm out.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (D: Fowler 2022)

It was a nice touch getting the voice actress for Tails to voice him in the movie. Forgot about that, but I was thinking during it that the voice seemed pretty close. Makes sense that it was the voice I’ve heard from other things Sonic related.

Also agreed about Jim Carrey. A role like Robotnik seems like something he’s just at home with and nails. Kinda hope that he returns for more sequels despite him saying he’s going to retire (he said he might return for the right roles).
