Yeah, the longer the shutdown goes on, the more drastic it will be. Some businesses won't be able to weather a couple of weeks, and a lot probably won't even reopen when the all-clear is given.

I think that the immediate effect will be that 25-33% of small businesses (at least retail, bars/restaurants, and entertainment) will get wiped out immediately, and a few stragglers will keep going until they can't make it anymore. Even a lot of mid-tier retail and restaurant chains will probably go under as well. It will probably be the final nail in the coffin for a lot of "on the bubble" chains like FYE and Barnes & Noble.

Are we sure that Just Mercy is an “early release” It had a wide release in January and a limited release in December. It’s been about 90 days since it’s wide release. This seems like the normal timeframe for it to hit digital. It’s no longer playing either.

Some thoughts on independents weathering a shutdown ... these companies are at the mercy of their regular creditors. Really, just a few of them that they have monthly payments to. Being closed does stop many of the expenses (payroll, product, a bulk of utility costs, etc.). If their landlords are willing to pause rent collections, their insurers are willing to halt premiums, and any bank lenders are willing to forgo payments, they may be in better shape than the large chains who have to answer to shareholders who are watching their investment evaporate.

Now, if they pay staff during the closure or the owner cannot make his own bills ... different story.

I was wondering that as well. Especially for theaters. If the landowners forgo their payments a couple of months and they let go of almost their entire staff they have very little overhead if they close their doors. Seems like they would be able to reopen without too much problems. But I don't know AMC's financials and if they are in massive debt or not.

F9: The Fast Saga (now April 2, 2021) pushing that out a year does not seem so funny now. Whoa...

I had thought that The Gentlemen was going to come out today. VUDU doesn't even have a date for it, just a Pre-Order option.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news

There is a rumor that WB may consider releasing WW84 directly to streaming platforms instead of delaying it. This is one I would definitely pay to own immediately.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news

The article where this “rumor” started from has the producer saying it would be ludicrous to do. This is nothing but speculation and clickbait to me...
And now all these sites are running with it.

I saw Scott Mendelssohn post this about the article:
The article about WONDER WOMAN 1984 potentially going to streaming is filled with on-the-record quotes from WB higher ups exclaiming that it's not going to streaming and explaining why it would be a terrible idea for it to skip theaters (along with speculation about JOKER going to streaming which makes no sense based on the timeline of events). So... what exactly is the story?

I’d buy it as well, and several others if they start providing that option. But no rental only stuff. I won’t buy into that, especially new movies in HDX only.

I think the digital release was originally going to be in the beginning of April, so they just moved it up a couple weeks.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news

There's no way WW84 would drop to streaming. It would lose WB a shit load of money and someone would end up pirating it and it would spread life wildfire. They are better off sitting on it.

The Way Back is understandable because it's a much lower budget movie and already had it's release and is unlikely to make anymore money.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news

What I am assuming is that movies that were currently playing in theaters will probably get put out early on streaming.

Anything that hadn't released to theaters yet will just be postponed.

This is pretty much what is happening.

Family/kids movies or low budget not yet released are the only ones that could be seriously considered... like Trolls.

Shall I do the obligatory "Wow, that's really fast" joke?

The NY Times was NOT impressed either.

ABC News had a segment about drive-in attendance being way up. They are limiting the number of people allowed in the concession stand at same time.

We have a drive-in opening here after years without, but not until July. Bad timing I suppose, but then again, nothing really to play at the moment.
