Re: RIP Kirk Douglas
He was one of the all-time greats, and outlived his grandeur because revisionist history judged him too harshly because of some things he did before the parents of most of those who applied revisonist history to him, were even born.
He made it to 103, we all should have so long a life... With his hard living, 103 to him is like over 120 to the rest of us.
OUT OF THE PAST was my favorite film of his, followed by SPARTACUS. And, let's not forget SATURN 3, which was a hoot!

A long life, and a legacy. Paths of Glory is one of the best films of all time, and I coincidentally rewatched it three times (including with commentary) a few weeks back, trying to study it further, and started reading the book.
Will probably see it again this week, it’s timeless. And maybe The Vikings too, that’s a fun one.

Huge fan, and even though it’s not a shock when someone is 103, I’m still sad to see him go.
Of all his movies, I’ve got to go with Ace In The Hole as my fave. Tonight I watched 1949’s “Champion” which I’d never seen, a great boxing flick and his first (!) Oscar nod. I wrote a little tribute for him over at my blog: Kirk Douglas, the last man standing.

He always creeped me out as a kid to the point I would avoid seeing anything he was in. I started to get over that with The Fury, and a couple years later The Final Countdown.
It was around the time that TCM started up, and I got into collecting laserdiscs that I became a big fan. It was then that I discovered Out Of The Past, The Bad & The Beautiful (and it's quasi-sequel Two Weeks In Another Town), Lust For Life, Paths Of Glory, A Letter To Three Wives, Ace In The Hole, Spartacus (which had a theatrical re-release in '91 IIRC), Lonely Are The Brave... So many truly great films. Like Clooney, Jane Fonda, Kiera Knightly, among a short list of others- he's one of those actors who was not only offered, but had great taste in choosing quality material. And he was usually right about the behind the scene talent to work with.
The shine started to come off for me when I took a cross country road trip in the mid-nineties. I brought along a bunch of audio books and one was Ragman's Son, his first autobio/menoir.
He narrated it himself and I found it nauseatingly maudlin. It was both startling and icky to hear someone who I'd seen as the epitome of an innate, reflexive masculinity reduce himself to this simpering, whiny, self conscious, self pitying narcissist.
That should have only made me give him more props as an actor, but I couldn't get past it. Everything since then I've seen with him- more great stuff like The Vikings and Indian Fighter- became colored by that.
The Wood revelation was the real kicker.
I found out about that bit by listening to a Wood bio audio book (narrated by Lana) which went into graphic detail of the incident, but refrained from revealing who "the big star at the time" was.
Eventually I found out about it online.
Still love his films, and he does give tremendous performances in just about all of them- but my level of disrespect that I have for him as a person can't help but diminish it all when I revisit them now.

That's a tough one to pin on Kirk Douglas. She had a couple of abusive boyfriends, might have died from a back alley abortion, and hung around with gangster who turned up missing around the same time she did. Lot of suspects there, the only thing that might connect her to Douglas is the note they found in her purse addressed to someone named Kirk.

Last night at a meeting I did a silly voice and someone said they thought I'd do a Kirk Douglas impression. I asked, why, did he die today? They said yes. I said wow, 103. They asked, wait, you didnt know he died today but you knew he was 103? I said yes. They asked, how did you know that? And I said... I don't know! It was weird.
Great actor, good guy, amazing legacy. Hope he gets more then 2.5 seconds in the Oscar montage, but wow, what a career.

Made it to 103. RIP. But nothing to be sad about there.
Michael talked about him recently on Marc Maron's WTF like he was still sharp.

One the most positive things about this is that they will never have to wheel him out at an Oscar ceremony again while the camera cuts to everyone awkwardly trying to listen.

Loved him in so many films. I recently watch Paths of Glory for the first time, and wow, what an amazing powerful performance. I regretted selling my criterion so much that I went out and bought it again!

The first theatrical movie I ever saw him in was the 1979 The Villain. First and only movie I ever walked out of and didn't finish. I don't know much about his older scandals but seem most actors of that day (Rat Pack era who were some of the worst) were not the upstanding citizens we have been lead to believe.
RIP anyway...or burn whichever is more appropriate.

Seven Days in May, Lust for Life, Paths of Glory, Spartacus, The Bad and the Beautiful & Ace in the Hole were probably his best performances.
He was also good in Out of the Past, Lonely Are the Brave and Gunfight at the OK Corral.
Not one of his best performances, but I like the the Fury, especially the parts when he's on screen with John Cassavetes.

I completely forgot about Seven Days In May...and 20,000 Leagues.
While he certainly has his share of clunkers, his filmography has to be, film for film, one of the greatest of any actor whose ever performed in the medium.

Anyone ever suffer through Eddie Macon's Run? John Schneider as a good-guy-treated-wrong, escapes from prison and trailed by a US Marshal played by Douglas.
Terrible movie, that still shows up on HBO or Showtime every so often, and I end up watching more of it than I should. 80s Lee Purcell is always easy on the eyes though...

His big regret was not playing the lead in One Flew Over the Cuckoo''s Nest though he probably would not have been as good as Jack Nicholson.
I assume the Oscars will do some kind of tribute to him or he will be the last name mentioned in the In Memoriam segment.
