Recast Luke han and Leia. Do eps 7-9, retcon sequel trilogy as 10-12. Boom. 12 eps like Lucas always wanted.

One day some kid in his parents basement is gonna completely A.I a better sequel trilogy with the entire original cast.

Side note. I have sort of been mentally equating Driver/Isaac to the De Niro/Pacino dynamic for today’s generation. Both in regards of talent and project choices. Unfortunately though, in this analogy instead of Godfather II/Heat/The Irishman they’ve done 3 Righteous Kills.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

It honesty felt a lot like Kathleen Kennedy aimed to piss off the Star Wars fans of old and cared more about ushering in a new generation.

To me it wasn’t the fact that she was going for more inclusiveness but a lot of the messaging and way she went about it is what I didn’t like. Good riddance to her.

I for one don't understand the love for him. Too lore-reliant, too much character shilling, all his stuff feels like generic sci fi/fantasy, not Star Wars.

This suggestion seems so strangely familiar. Hmmm...

Isn't the lore what makes Star Wars, Star Wars though?

I don't remember if I said it in this thread or one of the others, but my belief is that at this point with Star Wars fandom reaching across multiple generations and demographics, there is no consensus as to what Star Wars is or is not. It means too many different things to too many different people and no matter who is in charge or what direction they go, there will be a segment of the fandom that will be unhappy.

For me its the syncretism of disparate media into a cohesive, distinct product. Comics + outsiders + war movies + international cinema + world religions + allegories. Star Wars that "expands the story" is like the least interesting Star Wars to me

This. Not to mention that many aspects of the "lore" have never been all that internally consistent anyway and frankly got pretty stupid no later than the prequel trilogy. I love the original trilogy and there have been highlights here and there in Star Wars content since then, but there have also been a lot of subpar stories that try too hard to draw connecting lines that are either predictable or unnecessary. Just give me good stories that live in the same universe and capture the spirit of the original trilogy (see: Andor).

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

Recast do this version. Can't be any worse than revealing Luke and Leia being siblings and ewoks in the OT or any of the awful TV series/movies fans have been given over the last two decades. Everyone wants the original characters of the OT anyway.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

Apparently Kathleen Kennedy is mad news about her retirement got out and is denying she's retiring by year's end. I'd say she's probably still retiring but wants to be the one to break the news.

Kennedy denied she's "retiring", but they are forming a succession plan for someone to take over Lucas Films

I think it's up to Disney to have a succession plan not her.

Ultimately Bob Iger and the Disney board will be the one who hires Kennedy's replacement.

Hopefully they let Filoni wrap up his stories. As someone who has loved his stuff, it will suck not to get a proper ending.

If they want someone who's more on the creative side, I would expect Jon Favreau. He made Disney a lot of money as a director and producer and he already is the producer of most of the Disney+ shows.

Quoting from further up for relevance:

Running a studio is very different than producing individual film/TV projects. Jon Favreau could turn out to be terrible at running a studio, if he even wants the job. Can anyone point to the last time an actual director took a studio head job?

Also, it's funny that Jon Favreau gets all this praise for his Star Wars projects, when all of them were made while Kathleen Kennedy was running the studio, so she gets credit too.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

The last producer/creative I can think of who had a successful career running a movie studio was probably Richard Zanuck. He ran 20th Century FOX for years. But, that was a different age of Hollywood.

Sherry Lansing also had a nice run overseeing Paramount in the 80s. But again, that was a different age.

Kennedy had the unfortunate task of being hired to oversee a really tough IP with super hardcore fans who are tough to please.

I mean as a fan, I "get it", out of everything Disney Star Wars he's been the most consistent. But if we're being honest, only about 50% of what he's done has been good. He shines in animation (Clone Wars, Rebels & Bad Batch) and outside of that the live action output is very hit or miss.

People want him to be the guy, because of those few wins, but who's to say there isn't someone with a better vision out there?

If this was in response to me, there was a reason why I specified directors, because I think that it's even more rare that anyone that's ever directed a movie ended up a studio head. From what I can see, neither Richard Zanuck nor Sherry Lansing ever directed anything.

It seems unlikely someone with that sort of hands-on experience making films is going to step away from it to run a studio, if they'd even be considered for the job. Even when Steven Spielberg joined Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen to found Dreamworks, Spielberg didn't run the studio, that was Katzenberg's job.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

It's breathtaking the amount of damage Kennedy has done to one of the world's most popular brands. She doesn't seem to care and has doubled down repeatedly on stupid decisions, both creatively and financially.

The fish rots from the head.
