Luhrmann is an incredible director. The only thing that could derail a possible masterpiece is the casting of Elvis. That trailer didn’t really instill confidence Austin Butler can pull this off, and it looks like it’s all going to hinge on him.

This, to me, looks like a glitzy alternate universe take on the 1950's and 1960's. And the kid playing Elvis... Nah. He doesn't look like him, and he doesn't have the facial expressions or mannerisms.

Based on the trailer alone this looks like a massive fail.

Luhrmann's films are gorgeous to look at and I do enjoy them. But working with him must be every editor's nightmare. Every scene is cut within seconds. And this does look entertaining. But Butler looks more like Johnny Depp in "Cry Baby".

I thought he had a Conrad Birdie sort of vibe going on.

Did you not see Rocketman? That was a fantasy take on Elton John’s story. This reminds me somewhat of it.

No, I didn't see Rocketman. Nor did I want to. I still don't want to. Not my kind of thing.

Not typically my kind of thing either. But it was hugely entertaining. And way better than the mediocre "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Re: Elvis (2022, D: Baz Luhrmann) S: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks

I hate musicals. It's a stupid genre, in my opinion, but the musical/fantasy take on Elton Johns life in Rocketman was very entertaining. I liked that movie a lot. I liked Bohemian Rhapsody, too, but Rocketman was way more fun.

Baz Luhrman isn't doing it for me. I just don't like his movies, while I do appreciate the look of most of his movies, the storytelling is just schmaltzy and the characters are way over the top.

Re: Elvis (2022, D: Baz Luhrmann) S: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks not only looks ridiculous but also that voice he’s going sounds stupid too.

This is gonna be a massive bomb at the box office. Elvis isn’t really like The Beatles, who are still very popular music today.

Only old people give a shit about his music. I’m sticking to that, flame away.

Now a drama about Fat Elvis and the downfall with a good director and actor, that would be interesting.

^ I’m 42 and a huge Elvis fan.

There were a few quick shots of “Fat Elvis” in the trailer. It seems odd to put Tom Hanks in a fat suit but not add any fat suit to Butler for his Fat Elvis days.

Sure he sounds ridiculous speaking with that slow Southern accent, but you know.....

^ Colonel Parker was from the Netherlands. I think Hanks is trying to speak in a Dutch accent.

The singing dancing and acting seem to be top notch, so I’m okay with him not being Elvis’s doppelgänger.

This looks good.

It looks like there could be a great movie somewhere in there but man oh man the casting is so distracting. Beaver teeth Elvis and Mr. Potato head Tom Hanks just make it ridiculous.

That's what I meant when I said I enjoyed Luhrmann's films. They are eye candy only. I've never watched any of them twice. Once was definitely enough. Aside from Rami Malek's performance, "Bohemian Rhapsody" was kind of a mess. But I blame it's production nightmare.

And John Lennon himself said "Nothing affected me until I heard Elvis.

Without Elvis, there would be no Beatles", John Lennon famously said about the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

Thats just fine. Simply pointing out what it is today. Elvis music does not hold up and The Beatles does.

Thats not really a controversial statement either.

If you prefer the Beatles over Elvis, that's your choice. But to say Elvis's music is trash and no one likes him but old people, is your opinion. Personally, I would rather hear cats meowing in the rain than listen to the Beatles, but I do understand their importance to music in general.

So basically you're saying were closed minded about it, didn't want to be open minded, and never will be because you just don't like the genre? I typically don't care for musicals either but I loved Rocketman. Sometimes it pays to have an open mind.

I think the movie looks interesting to say the least. Seems to me that Luhrman is doing a music biopic, but has shot it like one would a superhero movie. Only he could pull off something like that if that's what he's trying.

A new generation will learn how he stole and co-opted black music and made it his own.

He didn't steal anything. Black musicians were still able to do black music.
