Re: Robocop 2 re-do reportedly in development (sequel to 1987 movie)

Psycho 2 was good, nothing could match the original except Hitchcock making it.

Commando 2 instead of Die Hard

The original Godfather 3 idea when Robert Duvall was still thought to be in it.

Psycho IV already ignored II and III for the most part. It was written by original Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stefano and he included a line that mentioned murders that took place between the events of the two movies he wrote but the flashback events of IV completely contradicted II and III.

Honestly Psycho II is really good. A lot better than most probably would expect it to be given that the original is such a classic. The third is pretty decent too but a step down from the first two. I’m not a huge fan of the fourth but it’s watchable.

RoboCop Returns (TBA, D: Blomkamp)

Based off of an old script that was supposed to be a direct sequel to the original RoboCop.

The plot: Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.

MGM is developing a new installment of RoboCop and has set District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to helm the picture, which is titled RoboCop Returns. The studio hopes to revive a franchise that began with the Paul Verhoeven-directed satirical sci-fi action thriller that Orion released in 1987. Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and exec producing, respectively. Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the Terminator film that Tim Miller is shooting, will rewrite the script that Neumeier and Miner wrote years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven’s hit, an installment that never happened. That duo is creatively involved in moving forward their creation for the first time since the original.

The original starred Peter Weller as a badly wounded cop on death’s doorstep who is turned into a cyborg law enforcement officer tasked with wiping out crime in an out of control Detroit, but who is plagued by submerged memories of his previous married life. MGM revived the concept with a Jose Padilha-directed version that starred Joe Kinnaman in 2014. That film didn’t do so well domestically, but grossed $240 million worldwide and was particularly strong in China. MGM exec veep Adam Rosenberg is overseeing the new one for the studio.

The 2014 reboot was pretty good.

Could be interesting. I like the original film and Robocop 2 is a guilty pleasure. I’m probably one of the few who didn’t mind the reboot either. I find Blomkamp’s films hit and miss though.

Agreed - I enjoyed it.

Hopefully the success of more hard-R films lately will encourage them to make it R-Rated, as it should be.

Ugh, Blomkamp. I recall liking the reboot too, even if it feels somewhat forgettable now to me.

The 2014 remake/reboot/whatever was fairly decent... until it became PAINFULLY obvious that they wrote the entire third act of the movie as they were filming it. It fell completely and irredeemably apart.

2 is underrated, 3 is crap, and the remake was trash.

Blomkamp is gonna make a Blomkamp film, but the only way I'm gonna truly be interested is if Weller returns. And he won't.

But didn't Cameron say that Terminator: Genysis is the true sequel to Judgment Day?

I kind of have mixed feelings on these sequels that ignore other sequels. In this case neither the second or third film are as good as the first but like others I like Robocop 2 for a guilty pleasure movie.
I think Robocop 2 is pretty good. It could be better, but I feel that it continued the style and tone of the first film pretty well.

It's weird that they just released a remake and now, instead of continuing with that film, they're going to make a sequel to the original which already has a sequel.

IIRC, RS said no script was ever completed...it was simply an idea NB came up with and didn't follow through on.

Weller will never ben back. He's gone from Robo and Hollywood altogether.
He's like Robert Plant and Led Zep. Been there, done that. Talks shit about it.
