Man... this was a real misfire from Hawley. A lot of talented people involved and decent performances. The themes and concepts are good, but the execution is not.

First, if you are going to say it is inspired by actual events, then how about using some of the compelling things from that story? Or just adapting it straight up. Or do something similar exploring the same themes readjusting back to life on earth without the love/affair angle. Something else could’ve contributed to putting her over the edge.

Second, the use of multiple aspect ratios is fucking stupid here. I guess he wanted us to feel a sense of disorientation, but all it does is become annoying and take you out of the movie. This was not some highly stylized thing like Legion where he used this technique effectively. The story does not call for it. Even scenes with a portion of the shot out of focus... It just makes your movie look like shit.

Most of the movie was 4:3 which sucked and was pointless.

I wanted to like it but it was slow and boring.

The guy who played her husband Dan Stevens was pretty good.

I like Dan Stevens. Never saw Downton Abbey but yeah, he's a good actor, does the badass thing pretty well to.

I just watched this on Cinemax. Considering the talent in front and behind the camera, I was astonished how bad this movie was. Not a single likeable character. The story was a mess. And the movie goes completely off the rails in the final act.

Portman's character completely goes unhinged in the final act and literally becomes a psycho stalker to her former lover. And she was supposed to be the protagonist? A total misfire from Hawley.

and the changing aspect ratios made absolutely no sense. At first, I thought it was supposed to be some period drama, then I realized it wasn't. So I found the constantly changing ratios annoying.

Sorry I had it recorded off Cinemax from a few months ago and finally made the time to see it this past weekend. I was flabbergasted how awful it was.

It's currently off the HBO/Cinemax rotation. Who knows when or if it will come back.
