Lucy in the Sky (2019, D: Noah Hawley) S: Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens

Jon Hamm is in negotiations to star opposite Natalie Portman in Fox Searchlight’s “Pale Blue Dot,” sources tell Variety.

“Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley is directing from a script by Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi. Reese Witherspoon, who was attached to star at one point, will produce with Bruna Papandrea.

“Pale Blue Dot” follows a successful female astronaut who, after coming back home from a mission in space, starts to unravel when confronted by her seemingly perfect life. The film explores the theory that astronauts who spend long periods of time in space lose their sense of reality when they return home.

Hamm will play Portman’s fellow astronaut who she aggressively pursues after returning to Earth.

With “Legion” wrapped and Hawley’s other FX series, “Fargo,” not shooting until next year, production on “Pale Blue Dot” is expected to start in the spring.

Hamm, best known for his iconic role as Don Draper on AMC’s “Mad Men,” has taken on more movies since the show ended in 2015. He most recently starred in “Marjorie Prime” and also had a scene-stealing role as a bank robber in Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver.” His thriller “Beirut” recently bowed to solid reviews at the Sundance Film Festival.

Hamm is repped by CAA, Forward Entertainment, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.

re: Lucy in the Sky (2019, D: Noah Hawley) S: Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens

Dan Stevens will reteam with his Legion creator-showrunner Noah Hawley for Fox Searchlight's drama Pale Blue Dot.

The Beauty and the Beast star will join Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm and Zazie Beetz in the astronaut star that Hawley is set to direct.

Pale Blue Dot centers on a married astronaut (Portman) who returns to Earth after a mission and begins an affair with a fellow astronaut. She heads into a downward spiral as she loses her connection to her family — a condition that can afflict those who spend a long time in space — and when her lover begins another affair with an astronaut trainee, the bottom drops out.

Hamm is playing the fellow astronaut while Beetz is the other point in the love triangle, the trainee.

Stevens will play Portman's onscreen husband whom she cheats on.

Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi wrote the feature that is inspired by a true-life astronaut love triangle in which a female mission specialist tried to kidnap a rival in 2007.

Stevens, who is repped by WME, the U.K.'s Julian Belfrage and Peikoff Mahan, is in the midst of his second season of Legion, Hawley's X-Men-based series on FX. He has Gareth Evans' Netflix drama Apostle in the can for a possible release later this year and this week joined Elisabeth Moss, Amber Heard and Cara Delevigne in the punk rock drama Her Smell.

re: Lucy in the Sky (2019, D: Noah Hawley) S: Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens

Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn will join Natalie Portman in Fox Searchlight's now-untitled drama from Fargo and Legion showrunner Noah Hawley.

The astronaut drama is assembling an A-list flight crew, including Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz and Dan Stevens, as well as Portman.

Formerly titled Pale Blue Dot, the film centers on a married astronaut (Portman) who returns to Earth after a mission and begins an affair with a fellow astronaut (Hamm). She heads into a downward spiral as she loses her connection to her family — a condition that can afflict those who spend a long time in space — and when her lover begins another affair with an astronaut trainee (Beetz).

Hamm is playing the fellow astronaut, while Beetz is the other point in the love triangle, the trainee. Stevens plays Portman's husband.

Burstyn will play Portman's salty and tough grandmother.

Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi wrote the feature that is inspired by a true-life astronaut love triangle in which a female mission specialist tried to kidnap a rival in 2007.

Burstyn was last seen in Sundance drama The Tale, which recently had its premiere on HBO. A veteran Oscar-winning actress, she appeared in classics such as The Exorcist and more recently in House of Cards, and is repped by ICM Partners and MGMT.

Weird. It doesn’t look bad, but why does a film that is serious want to have a jokey title? And realistically, have any astronauts ever come back troubled by the experience?

Why is it a jokey title? Seems more interesting than the original title, at least.

If that happened to a Russian cosmonaut, they probably quietly disappeared.

At first I thought it was something to do with the Beatles without opening the thread.

Exactly. It’s a reference to the title of a Beatles song that is generally agreed to be about drugs.

Not a really compelling teaser. Just seems odd and gives me a feeling the movie will be melodramatic.

Noah Hawley has me sold because of Legion and Fargo.

I just read that the plot of this movie is derived from the incident of the NASA astronaut that poop her pants while attempting to kidnap her lover’s girlfriend. No wonder they don’t really tell you what it’s about in the trailer. I can’t believe they wanted to make a movie about this.

I wonder what Paul McCartney feels about this?

I can see it IF it is a black comedy.
Hopefully, Hawley applied his considerable skills in the genre to this movie.

Getting absolutely wrecked in the reviews: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lucy_in_the_sky

But even those that didn't like it, seem to think it was entertaining?

Please explain.
Are you saying "The film explores the theory that astronauts who spend long periods of time in space lose their sense of reality when they return home" is incorrect?

Gravity isn't about Sandra Bullock when she returns home. Simple as that.

To be precise, the difference is 4 words: "The film explores the theory that astronauts who spend long periods of time in space lose their sense of reality when they return home"

What are you going on about? Gravity isnít about any of that, no matter how many times you repeat it.

Maybe you don't recall the bit about where "she begins to lose consciousness, Kowalski enters the capsule, scolding her for giving up. He tells her to rig the Soyuz's soft landing rockets to propel the capsule toward Tiangong, then disappears. Realizing Kowalski's appearance was a hallucination, Stone regains the will to go on."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_(2013_film)#Plot

At that point, it became obvious what WAS reality and what WASN'T was being left for the observer to decide...which made Gravity a different kind of sci-fi than what was the normal fare.

^ Nope, I didnít forget about that part but one scene does not make a film about losing a sense of reality.

In fact, Iíd argue itís the complete opposite. Gravity is about snapping back into reality. With her backstory of losing a child and not sure how much life she has left in her, she ultimately decides to fight to survive. With itís hit-you-over-the-head theme of ďrebirthĒ itís quite obvious to anyone watching that the filmmakers arenít exploring the concept of astronauts mental capacity after spending long periods of time in space. Considering the facts that the film makes it a point to tell us this was her first mission to space and she was on a shuttle rather than the ISS, her length of time actually spent in space was rather short by comparison to some other astronauts.

For ME, it did (to a degree).

"Long periods" or short periods of time in space...however you want to count the length.
My point is there is a similar thread running through these 2 films.

BTW, have you read Bill Hunt's take on Pitt's new space film?
Yikes, I can't recall him unloading on a movie like that.
