Good point. That speaks to a bigger thing : Somehow, and for reasons that aren't explained, Waconda has become this isolated, secret technological marvel that hides itself from the outside world. For whatever the reason is, they felt strongly that it was this important and kept that way for many, many years. Seems a little rash for T'Challa to suddenly and unilaterally change the country's entire policy.

Especially since their policy wasn't changed based on an alien invasion a few years ago. I agree with his changing viewpoint based on the events in the BP movie a lot more if you take away the alien invasion aspect of the MCU. I've only seen Homecoming once and yes it dealt with struggles a salvage owner had but still, I don't know, it just seems like the world should be a bit more "peace on earth" because KILLER ALIENS. I dunno, ha.

And don't get me wrong, still think it's an amazing movie that lived up to the recent hype.

You'd have to ask T'Challa's father since he was the one that kept a tight reign on Wakanda. Outside of a few, Klause being one, no one knew about the place and those that had heard of it took it to mean it was a place of legend like Atlantis or something.

Not to get political but there was obviously a mirroring of our current political climate with the Wakanda first policy. They're not coming out into the world to help the world, they're coming to help the oppressed (black people). At least that's what I got out of it.

The first post credits scene where T'Challa says "in times of crisis, the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers" certainly comes off as a not so veiled shot at the Trump administration

very similar feelings. while it definitely is in top 1/3rd of Marvel movies, I don't think it was their best. The production of it was great as were performances, but some of the stuff just fell flat to me.

I'll also agree that the first fight sequence in the jungle with the trucks was absurdly dark. you couldn't see shit going on.

Such is the privilege of the king. Regardless, it makes sense as T'Challa is not only more compassionate than his forebears, he also just faced a crucible that I'm not sure previous rulers had in Killmonger. That was a good lesson that not only was Wakanda's isolationist policies having a negative effect on the world at large, they were also ultimately harmful to Wakanda.

Props to Coogler for another nice one take action sequence.

It apparently wasn't for lack of trying, since I read that Bassett turned it down. Perhaps she thought it was beneath her at the time... and maybe it was. There isn't much to the role of Storm in the first movie... or any of the sequels for that matter.

Considering X-Men ushered in the current superhero blockbuster craze, she had no way of knowing what a hot property it would become.

Which one was it? I didn't notice, but I didn't in Creed either. I hope he makes that his trademark. I'm interested to see him make an original action movie that isn't part of a franchise.

Just got back from this. I thought it was very good but not the best. Great action, great characters, decent story. It did get a little slow in parts. One of my nit picks was the lighting. Not sure if it was my theater or the movie. But if you take a dark skinned character, put them in dark clothing, then put them in a dark environment, move them around really fast and shake the camera you get some of the scenes were hard to follow. Probably a third of the movie was in some sort of nighttime or cave dwelling scene.

My son and I saw it on LieMAX 3D and I didn't think that it was worth it. Very little extra depth and no pop-outs that I remember. Beautiful picture though and excellent sound design.

I, like others here, thought the movie was good but not great. Enjoyable but way too long and pretty serious the entire time (the exact polar opposite of the recent Thor movie).

I would cut at least 20 minutes out and tightened it up. That wouldn't be too hard as several scenes and characters could have been easily cut and never missed.

The biggest issue is that the villain is far more interesting and charismatic than the lead hero. Killmonger steals ever scene he is in and is really the only interesting character in the film (except for the Gorilla King).

And they fucking killed him. Stupid. He would have been a nice addition to the Marvel film universe if they could have turned him good.

I think it's interesting how some here have said this movie is too long and some have also said Wonder Woman last summer was also too long.

So for those guys, is the consensus that 130-140+ minute Super Hero movies are too long and exhausting to watch? Or was it the editing and pacing that caused it to feel too long? I don't seem to recall any complaints that Captain American: Winter Soldier or Civil War were too long or dragged. Both of those movies were 135+ minutes each.

It all depends on a movie's story and pacing. Black Panther could have been fine as a 135 minute movie if it hadn't dragged in places and several scenes/characters stood out as superfluous.

But that is the case of any and every movie.

Saw it tonight and while I did like it (and gave it 4 stars here), I feel like the CGI was bad enough to warrant at least a half star reduction. I was cringing at times watching the action.

But, I thought it was fun and well acted.

Saw it yesterday morning. Couldn't believe the showings were sold out completely on a Monday, but it was a holiday. I liked it, but didn't love it. Wow, way overhyped. This is not the greatest superhero movie of all time or even the best Marvel. I put in the mid-tier category along with Ant-Man. Perfect for a February release.

The character of Black Panther was just underwhelming to me. He felt like much more of a bad ass in Civil War. I wanted to see more tech and more Black Panther in the suit. I enjoyed the female warriors a lot more and it'll be fun to see how Wakanda contributes in the battle against Thanos.

Some small nitpicks, wow that had to be the least funniest Stan Lee cameo. The fight scenes outside of South Korea just lacked Marvel awesomeness, and I wanted to see more tech.

I didn't think Black Panther dragged at all.

It was a character driven movie more than an action driven movie and that seems to have thrown some people who are a bit ADD when it comes to movies.

Since I grew up watching classic movies from the 30's to the 50's it seemed plenty fast paced to me and never dragged one bit. I found what the characters had to say in those dialogue driven scenes to be far more interesting than the action scenes themselves.

I wouldn't change a thing when it comes to the pacing of the movie.

I think I liked the movie better than you did, but I think some of the reviews for this movie are being skewed upward due to no one wanting to be the "asshole" who didn't like a movie that celebrates African culture by a prominent African American director. Similarly , I felt Lady Bird was merely a good movie and that its accolades came from no one wanting to look like a sexist a-hole in the midst of all the sexual misconduct allegations in Hollywood. So..take that FWIW.

I liked the serious tone, I don't recall BP being all jokey in the comic books.. and he was dealing with some heavy issues. Just a slight touch of comedy was enough. Very similar to the first Thor in terms of tone. The MCU already has the new Thor, GotG and Ant-man (and Spider-man) to be amusing. I don't expect that kind of comedy in Cap's films.

I agree. The pacing was very good. I recall realizing, when the credits rolled, that I hadn’t even glanced at my watch during the movie, and that rarely happens.
