Re: Sexual Harassment/Assault & Abuse in Hollywood -- Discussion
News item from today.

When Naomi Watts landed her breakthrough role in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive in 2001, she was 33 years old — which, she soon learned, was practically ancient in Hollywood years.
"I was told [taps an imaginary watch], 'You better get a lot done because it's all over at 40 when you become unf---able.' And I'm like, 'What? What does that mean exactly?' Then you think about it, and you go, 'Oh, right. When you are no longer reproductive, when those organs are no longer functioning, you are not sexy, so, therefore, you are not hirable.' That just made me so mad."

What do you think Hollywood could do better when it comes to allowing women to age like human beings?
It's such an awkward conversation because, from day one, we begin our aging process. It's something we just all have to get comfortable with and women are asked to do it more than men. We don't talk about a man aging hardly ever. We don't talk about his gray hair. In fact, if we do, it's like, "Oh, he gets more handsome, more desirable, more powerful." And why is he powerful? Because he's accumulated experiences. Well, it should be the same for women. We've got important and powerful experiences as well at this age that we should feel proud of.

It looks like Depp was added to that bill at the end of August. Maybe they just haven't updated the website. I've seen sites show info from past tours.

He's been removed from playing his Harry Potter character and Disney has no plans to use him in any more Pirates movies. There's no question that at least the Potterverse thing was directly related to him being "cancelled", at least at the time of the trial. I don't necessarily agree with the decision. But to deny that the negative publicity hasn't had a huge negative effect on his professional standing and earning potential would be to deny his own attorneys, who won $10M from Amber Heard in a defamation case.

The cut off age doesn't exist anymore, a lot has changed due to the rise of TV/streaming shows. Of course there are still actresses and actors who are primarily hired for their looks and when those are fading the career fades out too. We won't see Megan Fox in Big Little Lies. But a talented actress like Naomi Watts won't have to worry about her career.
It's the same with Charlize Theron, surely her looks have been her gateway to Hollywood, she was a model before, but she only had been casted as the hot girl in a few movies, two decades ago. People recognized her talent.

Since everything is thinking it, I'll write it down: Men age like wine, women age like milk.

There is a much, much bigger picture to consider and be aware of than you are willing to acknowledge.
It's about attitudes and practices within a male dominated industry, how that bleeds into the product presented on screen, and then how that informs the attitudes and practices within a male dominated society because people are being instructed how to think by the movies and TV shows they consume.

So your POV is that Theron and Watts should not "complain" because it all worked out for them, as individuals.
There is a much, much bigger picture to consider and be aware of than you are willing to acknowledge.

I'm sure women had/have to eat much more shit and telling a person to look more fuckable is disgusting, but I'm also sure there have been changes for the better in recent years. 20 years ago Theron should look more fuckable and a lot of great actresses just were cast as the wife/love interest of the male protagonist. The change is slow and not finished, but it's happening. I'm sure there are still people telling young actresses to look more fuckable, but the notion that an career ends with 40 is outdated and that's change for the better.

That's not my point of view. I think it's necessary to speak of injustice, but at least they should own up to the fact, that they made use of their looks, to come forward in their career. Charlize Theron was a model, that's the epitome for superficial. Film and TV are visiual media and attractive people have an advantage.

Basically, you want her to be in a Catch-22. Because she's had success in a misogynist industry that favors beautiful women, she's now in a position of power to talk about it and be heard, but the fact that she benefited from her good looks makes her experience suspect. It's like the actress who gets the big part after Harvey Weinstein rapes her, and then people eye-roll how she can complain about what happened when she got what she wanted (the part, not the rape).
Theron does not have to "own up" to anything. For one thing, what you want her to admit is so obvious that it, literally, goes without saying.

New details have emerged about Bill Murray's alleged inappropriate behavior on the set of Being Mortal, comedian Aziz Ansari's adaptation of Atul Gawande's book of the same name.
A report published by Puck on Monday claims that Murray kissed and straddled a younger female production staffer on set. The woman's name was withheld, but the report noted that it was not Murray's fellow costar Keke Palmer, as has been speculated. Multiple sources alleged to Puck that it occurred near a bed that was part of production. Murray, who reportedly felt that the staffer had been flirting with him, also allegedly kissed her on her mouth, though the two were masked due to COVID-19 protocols.
The woman, who was "horrified" at the incident, reportedly filed a complaint. A second staffer who witnessed the incident filed a report too, according to Puck, which led the studio behind the film, Searchlight, to suspend production, though a reason why was never indicated to cast and crew.
The actor, who reportedly chalked up the incident to a miscommunication, allegedly resolved to remedy the situation. The two reportedly came to a settlement after some time, with Murray paying the staffer "just north of $100,000," per Puck. The woman also reportedly agreed to a non-disclosure agreement and to waive any legal claims made against the producers, Searchlight, and parent company Disney.
Representatives for Murray, Ansari, and Searchlight did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.
Murray addressed the allegations for the first time back in April, but did not elaborate on any details of the complaint. "I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn't taken that way," Murray told CNBC. "The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, so they wanted to check it all out, investigate it, and so they stopped the production."
He continued, "But as of now, we're talking and we're trying to make peace with each other… We're both professionals. We like each other's work… and if you can't really get along and trust each other, there's no point in going further working together or making a movie as well."
Geena Davis recently shared her own negative experience with Murray, accusing the actor of harassment in her new memoir, Dying of Politeness. Davis claims that Murray screamed at her privately and in front of cast and crew on the 1990 film Quick Change, which Murray co-directed. She wrote that he also allegedly used a massage device on her without her permission during her audition for the film.
Lucy Liu has also accused Murray of hurling insults at her on set of their 2000 film Charlie's Angels.

I guess she probably won't be working with Jason Reitman much in the future.
