Just saw this...I didn’t get it. Can’t believe highest rated rotten tomatoes of all time. I mean it was ok, but didn’t seem realistic. Everything Ronan said sounded forced. And not sure why the Metcalf hype. I mean she’s good, but nothing great. Thought father, Tracey Letts, was actually quite good and could have got some recognition. Just didn’t click and I had high hopes. While not realistic I enjoyed Edge of 17 much more as coming of age story.

You didn't like it because it wasn't in 3D.

I think Three Billboards is a much better film than LadyBird. By leaps and bounds. I was not a fan of Lady Bird outside of Letts and Metcalf.

because Three Billboards was finely crafted, humorous, dark, a great movie experience, twice already. LB was not. not saying it wasn't well made or anything just didn't click with me at all...

i honestly don't think this would have gotten as much attention if it was directed by a man...

You criticized Lady Bird because it wasn’t realistic for you. The two main leads in Three Billboards behave like aliens from outer space.

iyo. i'm not saying they weren't enhanced, but they were purposefully quirky. the actors did their jobs great. perfect blend of many elements. LB just fell flat. sue me!

You didn't like it, that's fine, that's your opinion. But you said they didn't feel real to you - - that's what I had problems with. As both someone who has practiced Pediatric and Adolescent medicine for over 20 years and the current father of an 11th grade daughter, I thought it felt very genuine and specific - - I actually thought that was the best thing about the movie. Maybe that female writer/director knows more about the subject matter than you do?

And while we are on the subject, maybe an African American writer /director might know more about racial tensions in the South than a white man from Ireland?

Because you are diminishing someone's work based on their sex.

Go say the same sentence in the Black Panther thread but insert the word "white" before "man" and see what kind of reaction you get.

Also, explain why Juno was so acclaimed.

i'm not diminishing anything on anyone. imo this movie was nothing special and with all the new found political correctness surging forward, i don't think this movie would have gotten as much acclaim had it not have been directed by a woman, since they hold the unjust minority in film directing (i can sadly only think of Gerwig and Jenkins getting acclaim last year for their movies). BP seems to be a great superhero/action movie and i don't think the director, whatever color or sex, would have made a difference...

Just watched Lady Bird and I'm having a hard time deciding what was worse - 3 Billboards, The Shape of Water or this.

1/5

Caught this over the weekend, not sure how this got a ton of nominations. Other than Metcalf, who was very solid as usual, the movie was just ok for me. The editing was a bit harsh, a lot of hard cuts.

I finally saw this one today. It was okay, but did anyone else (or maybe it was just me) notice how emotionally abusive the mother was towards Lady Bird? I really picked up on it during that kitchen scene when Lady Bird was begging her mother to talk to her and all the things she said to her just sort of made me cringe.

Saorise was okay in this, but my favorite movie of hers is "Brooklyn". She was superb in that one. Love it.

I just read this comment since the thread was bumped. Frances Ha was mediocre (finally saw it) but since Frances lived in New York she had the foresight to take off to Paris for the weekend since she lived in NY. It's less than a 7 hour flight. That quirk was cool, but she was annoying, as well.

If I had to watch one of those two films I'd rather watch Frances Ha. I'm just not Ladybird material.
