Lady Bird (2017, w/d: Gerwig) S: Ronan, Metcalf, Letts, Hedges, Chalamet

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cNi_HC839Wo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Written and Directed by Greta Gerwig
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Lois Smith

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Sacramento shots in the trailer! I can see the Tower Bridge from my office and I've been to that Thrift Town in Del Paso Heights many times.

I really liked it too. Normally, I would've waited on this one until I could rent it from the library but with Movie Pass, I could go for it. And I'm glad I did. Surprisingly, it was playing on two of the three screens of the arthouse, so it was a small, but enthusiastic crowd.

This was like JUNO, but with a 23-year-old in the part, rewritten by someone with none of Diablo Cody's wit, and directed by someone with a complete disregard for comic timing, and then edited as if you were watching it with your finger on the "skip" button. It seemed to me like the average length of a scene--not a shot, but an entire scene!--was ten seconds. And it still went on for 93 minutes. I don't get the love for this film unless you're a hovering Baby Boomer mother, the audience the movie was most designed to please.

Translated... “get off my lawn”.

This was better than Juno.

As usual, I completely agree with Stuckmann's review:

Likewise, What The Flick gave two very positive thumbs ups.

Re: Lady Bird (2017, w/d: Gerwig) S: Ronan, Metcalf, Letts, Hedges, Chalamet

I enjoyed this movie. As a coming-of-age flick about a self-conscious teen growing up in a slightly dysfunctional family, it doesn't break any new ground, but it nicely captures the minor triumphs and disappointments that can feel like momentous life-changing experiences to a teenager.

Some of the humor with the adopted brother and his girlfriend seemed a little forced, but much of the film's laughs are generated naturally through the multitude of characters. There's a gay subplot that felt like it was shoehorned into the storyline for indie movie cred; it could have been more developed, but since the film revolves primarily around Lady Bird and her own experiences, I'm willing to give it a pass on that.

Saroise "Sarshay" Ronan is perfect in the title role, deftly capturing the awkwardness and abrasiveness of a young woman determined to find her place in the world, and Laurie Metcalf is equally spot on as her sympathetic but conflicted mother.

Definitely worth the price of a ticket, even if you don't have Movie Pass.

Saw this a few nights ago and I definitely agree with you there.

I really loved any scene involving Saoirse Ronane, Laurie Metcalf & Tracy Letts. Fantastic performances from all three.

It was also great seeing so much of Sacramento on-screen. Spent a lot of time out there in my 20s.

I wonder is Saiorse will win the Best Actress Oscar for this? She is an incredibly accomplished actress for someone so young. She's got a big biopic coming out next year (Mary, Queen of Scots) that could nab it for her too.

Lady Bird overtakes Toy Story 2 as best reviewed movie on RT. While both are at 100%, Lady Bird now has 165 reviews compared to 163 for Toy Story 2.

Glenn Kenny reviews films and streaming services for The New York Times and also blogs. Here's his critical take on both LADY BIRD and CALL ME BY YOUR NAME:

Re: Lady Bird (2017, w/d: Gerwig) S: Ronan, Metcalf, Letts, Hedges, Chalamet

I enjoyed this, but it wasn't nearly as good as I'd hoped it would be. I did laugh quite a bit, though.

I thought Ronan was very good in the title role, but Laurie Metcalf didn't quite live up to all the awards buzz she's getting, IMO. She was fine, just nothing special.

I think Greta Gerwig didn't let some of the jokes play out long enough, she flew through scenes so quickly when it wasn't always necessary.

Anywhoo, it was enjoyable enough to watch.

I'd give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

You're not wrong. The "I've seen this before...and done better." was my reaction to the movie as well. Juno is a good comparison. I immediately thought of last year's Edge of Seventeen, which I think is a better movie than Lady Bird. To clarify, this isn't a BAD film, it's a good one...but it's not a GREAT one, and I don't get all the raves over it. Laurie Metcalf gets a nice, flashy role here (that's already getting her Oscar buzz), but I thought the father, played by Tracy Letts, gave the better performance.

Re: Lady Bird (2017, w/d: Gerwig) S: Ronan, Metcalf, Letts, Hedges, Chalamet

I thought the movie was very solid, though perhaps not as incredible as all the review buzz might suggest. The film is, understandably, very female-centric with several well-developed female characters and relatively thin, almost caricatured male characters (with the possible exception of the dad). I'm not stating that as a criticism - in fact, I think it's a strength of the film in that most films are either written or directed (or both) by men and so the female experience doesn't get explored as authentically as it does in Lady Bird. I think it does have some subtext and subtle layers that raise it above most other coming of age stories (it is substantially better than Juno in just about every way - that's a movie that has not aged well IMO). Specifically, it portrays a dynamic that is common for that stage in life but is rarely handled so deftly in these kinds of movies: rejecting or rebelling against things that you come to understand are actually very meaningful to you (family, faith, community, etc).
