Care to give an example? Because you come off sounding elitist. “There’s a whole ‘nother level going on in this film that most people don’t understand, man.”

That's why I prefaced it by saying "assuming," because I have not seen it yet. My sisters saw the English language version before taking my mom to see the Spanish version. They said that it was a packed show (the English language version) and that hardly any of the white audience laughed at the many inside "cultural" gags. I believe they mentioned that there was a "chancla" gag. Basically an adult or parent throws a slipper or shoe at a misbehaving child. Growing up in Mexican household I had my fair share of chanclas thrown at me. That sort of humor is most likely present throughout the film that certain white folks will not get. I assume this, but can't confirm it until I see it. I might see it this weekend once they remove the lame Frozen short.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)

Caught it today. I didn't even know they removed the Frozen short, and apparently some of the theater workers didn't either since they still "warned" us going in that there was a 20 minute short in front of the movie. My wife and I wanted to see it, but I guess it's going to be on TV this week so i'll just record it.

Anyway, LOVED Coco. I thought it was fantastic, and one of the best Pixar movies i've seen. They handled a fairly mature subject matter of death amazingly well for a "kid's" movie, and the family moments were incredibly touching and hit me really well.

It's funny, I did walk away with some of the same "complaints" that fujishig had, although they were just talking points with my wife after the movie and they didn't affect my enjoyment of the movie at all.

Spoiler:
I said something similar where #1, it was weird that his Hector couldn't explain that he was trying to come home to his family when he died, and #2 that him leaving to perform in the first place would be harsh enough to ban music in the family for so long. I mean... I work at a video game company, but if I died at a game convention it would be like my wife banning video games for our family

Anyway, a super enjoyable movie. I think it deserves all the praise it's getting, and probably my favorite Pixar movie in nearly a decade (since Up, maybe!).

I dont know if this will help your impression of the film, but remember that Hector didn’t know he was murdered. He thought he choked. It wasn’t until Mr. Awesome confessed that he (and the kid) learn the truth.

Murdered or choked, it wasn't his fault and he should have been able to be forgiven, since it's not like he chose never to come back to his family and just live the life of a star instead. I realize that it's central to the plot of the film to leave that up in the air, though.

I mean, she must have known what happened to Hector if only because the town worshiped Ernesto and she knows they ran off together.

My impression of the film was already off the charts and I already said it didn't detract from the movie, so I don't think I need any help there But I'm well aware and didn't forget that aspect, I just don't think it would matter that much like fujishig explained. Plus, for decades/generations of dislike that Imelda had for Hector, she sure manages to forgive him pretty quickly towards the end of the movie.

It's a pretty minor nitpick for me anyway, people obviously hold grudges for all sorts of reasons in real life.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)

I was expecting a lot from this movie and I was not disappointed. One of Pixar's best right up there with Up, Inside Out, Ratatouille etc. I also really admire the care Disney/Pixar take when crafting a film about a certain culture. They really do their best to treat it with the utmost respect. I can't wait to see the special features about the making of this film. If you haven't seen it yet seeing how much research they did on Moana was fascinating.

It was an incredibly beautiful movie as well. You could take a still shot of a lot of parts of the movie and hang it up on your wall as art.

So, the movie was very good but not great IMO. Actually was kind of annoyed that the catalyst was that the family hated music so much. IDK, I probably took that too seriously but everytime that was brought up really took me out of it. Might not be one of Pixar's best, though the animation is gorgeous, but it's still quite good.

4.0/5, (B+, 7.9/10, 3.25/4)

I actually thought that was very well done. Music is such a big part of a culture and seemingly Mexican culture so just the fact that this family had eschewed music for several generations and the complex reason why and their ultimate resolution was just beautifully written IMHO.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)

thought i would like it more. thought it would be more musical than the story would lead you to believe. started off a little slow, but redeeming in the end. good overall, but not best Pixar by far. even songs weren't too catchy or memorable. i do love the diversity that Pixar and Disney are putting out. between this and the fantastic Moana, they are on the right track to appeal to more audiences. and the cultures are just so interesting and we don't see it depicted all the time in animated or live-action films these days. i think i gave this 4 stars, but more 3.5-4.

IDK, didn't do it for me. Still a good movie.
