Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)
http://media.vanityfair.com/photos/5...5205-23-16.jpg Coco follows the secret musical ambitions of Miguel, who resides in a lively, loud Mexican village but comes from a family of shoemakers that may be the town’s only music-hating household. For generations, the Riveras have banned music because they believe they’ve been cursed by it; as their family history goes, Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife decades earlier to follow his own dreams of performing, leaving Imelda (Miguel’s great-great-grandmother) to take control as the matriarch of the now-thriving Rivera line and declare music dead to the family forever. But Miguel harbors a secret desire to seize his musical moment, inspired by his favorite singer of all time, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Bratt). It’s only after Miguel discovers an amazing link between himself and De la Cruz that he takes action to emulate the famous singer and, in doing so, accidentally enters the Land of the Dead. In the beautiful underworld, it’s not long until Miguel encounters the souls of his own family — generations’ worth of long-dead but no less vivacious Rivera ancestors, including great-grandmother Imelda. Still, given the opportunity to roam around the Land of the Dead, Miguel decides to track down De la Cruz himself. He teams up with another friendly (and skeletal) spirit — a trickster named Hector, voiced by Bernal — to find De la Cruz, earn his family’s blessing to perform, and return to the Land of the Living before time runs out. http://www.ew.com/sites/default/file...?itok=846lJRdM |

Looks interesting, and with the rest of Disney I love seeing other cultures being explored. That said, and it's probably just me, but it feels like so many movies that involve Mexico rely on the Day of the Dead theme, which is getting less interesting to me visually.

Using day of the dead imagery is cultural appropriation. An SJW told me.
Seems very cliche. Multigenerational family curse has been done a million times. It sounds like a Latin Orpheus in the underworld. |

Sounds just like Book of Life.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)
Book of Life was excellent, and great 3D to boot. Pixar does their homework, I highly doubt this will suffer from comparisons to BoL. BoL spent the entire movie in the land of the dead (well, save for the kid going into the dead, but a bit more morbid). The trailer alone shows the reality and the kids entrance to the dead. In Mexican folklore, the descriptions and look ofthe land of the dead looks pretty much like what we saw in Book and this trailer.
I like the trailer, I'm hoping they'll deliver yet again. |

I feel like this movie has been advertised much

Re: Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)
Disney and Pixar are just heads above any other animation studio at this point. The creativity that comes out of these two studios is just amazing. Especially when they do original movies like this.

I've really tried, but not a single one of these trailers has interested me in this movie.

Re: Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)
I saw a BTS bit about the detail that went into just getting the guitar playing animation perfect that reminded me of just how much care Pixar puts into their work. I'm definitely going, and I skipped The Good Dinosaur a couple of years ago.
Also, Edward James Olmos says he feels his work in Coco is a career highlight, and that's saying something. |
Re: Disney/Pixar's Coco (2017, D: Unkrich)
I've been pretty skeptical about this movie, especially since Pixar has been pretty iffy in their output for me lately, but the reviews will probably sway me.

I'm sure i'll see the movie and it will be great but i have no desire to see it in the theater currently

That's one thing I love about Disney/Pixar I really do believe that story is king there. With the exception of the Cars/Finding Nemo sequels I don't believe they make movies solely on the ability to sell toys. Don't get me wrong they'll still sell toys and other merchandise but not at the expense of the story. And they take weird premises (a cooking rat, an old guy with a house, a movie about a robot with no dialogue until the 3rd act) and craft them into something amazing. Very excited about this one. I think they also do exceptionally well when movies are ingrained in and highlight a certain culture. i.e. Mulan, Moana, Hunchback, Lilo & Stitch etc. |
