A record opening weekend for Suicide Squad, but expect a record drop-off in week 2.

Is Warner Bros really in financial trpuble? Batman v SUperman did pretty well and shouldn't they be getting some cash from the cable service sale to Charter?

Batman v Superman did not do "pretty well". $872M global on a $250M budget is meh at best. That should have been a slam-dunk $1B easy but they fucked it up.

Naw, they're doing fine financially. They simply could be doing much better with a little due care.

LOL if a movie filled with C/D-list characters ends up being the most profitable of DC films and the A-list character films never makes as much.

True, it took a big drop from Friday to Saturday and those numbers could look even worse if it takes another larger-than-expected drop from Saturday to Sunday. Personally, I enjoyed the film, but I expect the box office drop to be at least equal to what BvS experienced.

I'm betting on a massive DROP for SS next weekend. BVS kind of drop.

We'll see.

Audience scores for Suicide Squad have been very good in the younger age brackets. It's only middle-aged people that don't like it.

Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad

I don't think anybody is saying WB is going down the tube, nor that it isn't a solid opening for SS. But signs are suggesting that SS will follow a similar box office trend to BvS, which clearly isn't what WB was hoping for. And the critical panning of the DC-based films is becoming a trend of its own, which raises the question about what's happening behind the scenes at WB and when it will be righted.

Yeah I look forward to the write ups that claim Suicide Squad needs to make like $2B to make a profit.

Ok let's talk about something other than SS. Star Trek is looking rough. $127m on a $185m budget. How's it doing overseas?

And Secret Life sure has staying power. Still top 5.

I contributed to Star Trek this weekend. I enjoyed it, even though I'm not a Star Trek fan (my dad is a fan).

Only $66 million. Not sure if it's opened in all foreign markets yet.

Domestic: $127,901,364 65.8%
+ Foreign: $66,500,000 34.2%
= Worldwide: $194,401,364

Production Budget: $185 million

I seriously think Star Trek benefited when Star Wars was not around.

It hasn't opened in Japan, China or South Korea which are all pretty solid markets for Trek (nor has it opened in France, Spain, Mexico, Belgium, South Africa, or Brazil amongst others)

Not financially bankrupt, but creatively.

In other news, GB hasn't even cracked $200mm WW yet. Ouch! So much for a new franchise.

Yeah, I mentioned in the GB thread I anticipated a 225m finish...I'm going to downgrade that to just above 200 now. A handful of markets still to open, but nothing that's going to move the needle much. 2nd lowest grossing movie of the big summer releases, BFG taking first. A yuuuge bomb!

Looks like Independence Day: Resurgence's foreign money saved it from being an outright bomb

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $102,309,952 27.0%
+ Foreign: $276,858,783 73.0%
= Worldwide: $379,168,735
Same thing will be needed for Star Trek Beyond.

Wonder if Sony will still go ahead with Ghostbusters 2 instead of admitting their movie failed.

Of course they will. Sony is desperate for a franchise right now.
