Actually I would go see that movie if they could somehow shoehorn all three franchises in there.

It seems the non A-List characters do better for Marvel as well. I would say that prior to 2000, Marvel's A-list characters were Spider-man, the Hulk, and tyhe X-Men. Tey were about the only ones that were household names at the point. Iron Man and Captain America were B-list characters, and most of the others would be C-list or below.

Spidey and the Hulk have not been performing well in almost the past decade, while Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, and Iron Man have all been doing really well. Thanks to Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man is now an A-List character that is more of a household name now. Doctor Strange will likely becime a household name after the movie comes out in the fall.

A few weeks back, a marketing company for the studio gave me 60 passes to see the sneak preview for Suicide Squad on Tuesday. I had huge demand from everyone wanting tickets for this movie; definetely much more than the other movies they give me passes for. While I thought the movie was a C+, most everyone else in the crowd seemed to enjoy it, but they were all comic/sci-fi fanatics.

Just my opinion but I really thought they had the right idea with what they did, but the completely wrong franchise. The all female, Feig directed film should have been a new MiB movie.

As for SS's August record, it may be the biggest tent pole movie I remember opening in August. Not really surprised but it will most likely drop like a rock next week and kids are back to school within 2-3 weeks.

Just out of curiosity, how did you distribute the 60 passes? Did you give them out to friends/family/co-workers or did you put an announcement on social media and give them out to the first 60 respondents? Or some other way?

Yes, the first thought that crossed my mind was on "Silicon Valley" where they got a ton of positive feedback on their platform, but had only bothered giving the beta codes out to other coders, not the general public.

I run a fairly larger Meetup group in North Carolina based on sci-fi, comics, etc. Movie promoters are often offering me multiple passes to distribute among my members. since I have a limited number of passes, they are offered to members that have donated at least $5 in the past year to help support the costs of running the group. Once I offer up passes like these, I tend to get a lot of members that all of a sudden want to help "contribute" to the group. I usually go with my wife or father-in-law and occasionally give some extras to coworkers if I have enough left over and I know they were interested in seeing the movie.

The screening passes are the same ones they give out in contests you hear about on the radio. At these screenings they have two rows that are reserved for the local reviewing press, and the rest are given out for various contests or local groups. I usually get passes to about 3-5 different movie screenings a month. some aren't even sci-fi based, but they know I can get seats filled for them even for much lesser know movies. I hardly pay for any movies anymore except for something major like Star Wars which doesn't need word of mouth to get people to talk about the movies.

If there's any members in the Raleigh Durham area that want to see the free movies, message me and I can let you know when the studios issue them to me.

Are they the passes where they overbook the theaters and you have to get there at least an hour in advance to secure a seat? Because as much as I like free movies, I don't have time for that shit at 7PM on a weeknight (which is when said screenings usually are, at least in my area). Last couple of times I tried, I was too late and got turned away.

Yes, they can overbook. Doesn't happen too often except for big movies like Suicide Squad. Event at Suicide Squad I had some members that arrived at the theater at almost 7PM for the movie which started at 7:30 PM and they still were allowed in. The earlier you arrive the better seats you get and you get to chat with other fans while waiting in line. Deadpool was about the busiest screening I've seen and that may have been one of the few I've seen people turned away for when seats were filled.

I guess people just go crazy for free shit in my area, because the movies I was turned away for weren't huge movies. It's been a few years since I've tried it though, I think the last one was Real Steel, and I still got there 20 minutes early and was turned away. I also got turned away from Green Hornet that same year. I stopped bothering with it after that, unless I got offered one on a weekend, which I think has happened exactly once.

There's some movies where they're almost begging people to come to them. American Ultra was one that comes to mind. It was an awful movie. Eddie the Eagle was another which was a really decent movie that I enjoyed and would not have bothered to see otherwise.

Interesting. Seems like a smart way to spread the word about a movie in a smaller city. Thanks.
