A record opening weekend for Suicide Squad, but expect a record drop-off in week 2.

Is Warner Bros really in financial trpuble? Batman v SUperman did pretty well and shouldn't they be getting some cash from the cable service sale to Charter?
|
Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
Batman v Superman did not do "pretty well". $872M global on a $250M budget is meh at best. That should have been a slam-dunk $1B easy but they fucked it up.

LOL if a movie filled with C/D-list characters ends up being the most profitable of DC films and the A-list character films never makes as much.

Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
I'm betting on a massive DROP for SS next weekend. BVS kind of drop.
We'll see. |
Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
Audience scores for Suicide Squad have been very good in the younger age brackets. It's only middle-aged people that don't like it.

SS gets the August record.

Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
I don't think anybody is saying WB is going down the tube, nor that it isn't a solid opening for SS. But signs are suggesting that SS will follow a similar box office trend to BvS, which clearly isn't what WB was hoping for. And the critical panning of the DC-based films is becoming a trend of its own, which raises the question about what's happening behind the scenes at WB and when it will be righted.

Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
Ok let's talk about something other than SS. Star Trek is looking rough. $127m on a $185m budget. How's it doing overseas?
And Secret Life sure has staying power. Still top 5. |
Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
I contributed to Star Trek this weekend. I enjoyed it, even though I'm not a Star Trek fan (my dad is a fan).

In other news, GB hasn't even cracked $200mm WW yet. Ouch! So much for a new franchise.

Looks like Independence Day: Resurgence's foreign money saved it from being an outright bomb

Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
Wonder if Sony will still go ahead with Ghostbusters 2 instead of admitting their movie failed.
|
Re: Weekend BO 8/5 - 8/7: massive open for Suicide Squad
Of course they will. Sony is desperate for a franchise right now.
