The only saving grace I can think of is Bond doing traditionally well in the fall time period... but I think delayed costs put into a 60yr anniversary Spring release could be better. Too late to change their minds after Shang-Chi's opening wknd?

The movie is going to be a loss regardless. Just take it on the chin and start working on the next era of the franchise.

They could have simply stopped sinking money into advertising until they had a solid date as to an actual release. It’s Bond. No need to promote the hell out of it until it’s time.
It definitely will not make a profit, but it’s not like they’re not going to make another one if this fails.

I get it. Marketing costs for big films this run in the multi-millions. The rule of thumb seems to be 50% of the movie’s budget. This fucking thing cost $250 million to make so we’re talking, what, $125 million for marketing? Have they been paying that for each new marketing campaign after each delay? Yeah, cut your losses on this albatross!

The original date was April 2020. They had already spent over $65mil advertising that date and then had to push it the first time when the pandemic started.
April to November 2020 to April 2021 to now October.

To offset the costs, the next era of the franchise will be a filmed one-man play set in a single location. Shit’s going to have the set design of “Our Town”!

This is where that $900mil figure came from.

'No Time To Die' stands to be the most expensive James Bond film ever made, and its cost has been inflated by a couple of circumstances unique to the film. First, there is the £17.44m expenditure in 2018 for the aborted Danny Boyle production. Second, there are the million-a-month interest charges that the production is enduring for every month the film is not released. Between the last two accounting periods that have been publicly filed with Companies House in the UK, the cost of 'No Time To Die' grew from £199.5m to £214m. Given a year has passed since the last filing, the film's negative cost is now around £226m. At today's exchange rate, that equates to $314m.
Print & Advertising (P&A) is the cost to release and promote a film around the world. These costs will be shared between MGM (North America) and Universal (Rest of the World) and are rarely disclosed publicly, but industry estimates peg the P&A cost for 'No Time To Die' to be around $150m (some say as much as $200m). MGM had already spent around $30m before the first pandemic delay.
The lower end of these two cost figures combined - $464m - is the total revenue that must be recovered for the film to be profitable.
But the box-office receipts you see reported do not represent the money the studio collects. With ticket sales split between the exhibitor and distributor, MGM will see an average of 50% from every dollar spent on cinema tickets around the world. And this is where things get difficult for a film budgeted in a pre-pandemic world: 'No Time To Die' now needs to clear $928m at the box office to avoid losing money. No film has gotten close since the pandemic began.

Doesn't the product placement earn some revenue back for the studio? Or is that simply defrayed marketing costs?

That’s another issue. Product placement of some products that are like two to three years old at this point. It may have even been possible that scenes with products needed to be re-edited, digitally altered, or even reshot.

The last Bond movie Spectre made $200M in the states and $880 plus million worldwide. Sad to say this will not even make close to that. It could made F9 money if its lucky, but it would still be a money loser.

Read an article where Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are opposed to a Bond tv series. Honestly I kind of get it, but I don’t think a series on Netflix or somewhere would be a bad idea to consider. Could still keep the film side too, but some stories being told in more of a long form format could be cool. I get it that they might feel that would possibly cheapen the character though.

Is it going to cover how miserable he’s been playing the part, and how he’s glad this is his last film as Bond? I like Craig, but his attitude towards playing the character has been kind of off-putting.

As mentioned before it needs to make $900 plus million worldwide to not lose money. It’s the most expensive James Bond movie ever.
EON is heavily counting on UK and international revenue. In the current US climate, it will be lucky to even make $150m. But it could exceed expectations.
Black Widow took 45 days to get to $180M and that’s with Disney plus. So with this theaters only, it could get there sooner we’ll see.
