But they usually have fewer seats than they used to, so doesn't take as many people to sell out a show now. (Won't get any help from me anyways as I'm just about done with theaters at this point.)

The next movie with any chance at the record is Batman v. Superman, though it's not at a time of year when records are usually set. WB probably lost a couple hundred million in total gross by pushing it to March.

I think he's laughing at it having a chance at the record. As that's the most ridiculous part of that statement. This is another Batman reboot and the sequel to a terrible Superman movie.

I for one am amazed that Chocolate City isn't doing better with the star power of Tyson Beckford, Ginuwine, Vivica A Fox and Michael Jai White... and that they already remade Magic Mike

Boxoffice.com is predicting $105 mil for JW this weekend, which would put it right at $400 mil after 10 days. That is $27 mil higher than Avengers 1. No way it reaches Avatar's $749 mil record, but it's looking likely to reach the rare $600 mil club.

If I was Cameron I would be worried. This is a summer movie...and no competition in sight for awhile other than Minions.

$19.895m yesterday, currently at $278.4m domestic. Currently this holds the record for highest Saturday gross, highest Sunday gross, highest weekend gross, highest non-holiday monday, and highest non-opening Tuesday, The Dark Knight is in second with $20.9m).

Titanic and Avatar are proof that Cameron has some sort of weird, mystic box office power which draws audiences to break records on his movies . I'm not entirely unconvinced it isn't some sort of post-hypnotic suggestion thing .

I saw the movie and liked it, but I can't imagine it will get the repeat viewings necessary to dethrone Cameron's movies.

Deadline reports that this is the fastest film to hit 300M (Avengers held the record up until today), and if it sails past 104m this weekend, will dethrone Avengers as the film with the best sophomore weekend (with Inside Out / Dope up against JW, it is not a 100% lock to have a $104/5m weekend).
I hope theaters are slightly less kray kray this weekend, as I am chomping at the bit to see the film.

Yeah, the mid-week numbers are killing Avengers right now, but Jurassic World smartly opened during Summer Break. Had The Avengers or AOU done that, they both would have done better.

JW made $17.8m yesterday for a total 1 week gross of $296.2m, it should scream past $400m by the end of this weekend.
It grossed $100m in the first 5 days in China, which starts its Hollywood blackout period today and runs until the end of July (no new Hollywood movie openings) so it should have monstrous legs.

Avatar has made $760 mil in the US. It's asking an awful lot for JW to add another $360 million after this weekend. I don't see it doing more than $650 mil. $2 billion worldwide is also probably well within reach.
Avengers still came up $137 mil short of the record.

Yeah, it remains to be seen if JW has the necessary stamina. People have to remember that even though Avatar opened to a big but small-by-comparison $77m, it only dropped 1.8% its second weekend (to $75.6m) and then only 9.4% (to $68.5m) in its third weekend. And was #1 for 7 weeks.

Yeah, no way is JW a better film overall than Avatar. Not in this life or the next. I think Avatar will remain the champ until Avatar 2 comes out.

Being better has little to do with it. It's just how much crowds enjoyed it.
