Re: Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World

Inside Out is looking to slightly over-perform and end up in the 70s this weekend (vs expected mid 60s), so now JW is most likely looking at 90-95m. I think that it may not reach the first Avengers domestic, but there is still a chance it overtakes F7 as the overall top worldwide grossing film so far this year (F7, lest we forget, has been an international money making beast, 1.5 billion, same as Avengers).

Folks are madder than a hatter if they think it will come anywhere near Avatar's domestic, and while it may not seem as dificult as it used to be to reach 1B worldwide, the reality is that it is a massive feat to achieve a 1B+ worldwide gross, and JW still has a ways to go before it even approaches AOU's worldwide gross (AOU may not have matched Avengers gross, but at 1.3B it still put up crazy good numbers for Marvel / Disney...which makes it funny that there are people who will insist that "just" making 1.3B is a letdown for all involved with AOU, which I think is bull pucky and everyone that had anything to do with AOU is giddy it cleared 1.3B with TV / Cable / Streaming / DVD & Blu revenues still to come).

You have to know there's no way Avatar 2/3/4/5/etc. will ever gross more than the first. Certainly not domestically, at the least.

Yes, a significant minority of the audience which had enough of AVATAR after the first one will simply refuse to see the sequels (me included).

I think everyone will be surprised how much the Avatar sequel will make...I wouldn't doubt it will get very close to the original. Significant minority or not...

We'll see. This is JC after all, and he's developing even cooler shit for the sequels, so as cool as Avatar looked back then, imagine what the new sequels will like in the future? It'll have almost been 10 years between parts 1 & 2.

I couldn't figure out how to work Whoomp! (there it is) into a short enough title so I'm just going to add this weekends info to this thread and show you folks what it's all about:

I am mildly perplexed by Inside Out being #1 but them expecting Jurassic World to top the box office, since family movies usually have a Saturday bump.

Estimates for the weekend stand at $106.8m for Jurassic World, $83m - $92m for Inside Out.

Edit: Nevermind, "Friday’s IO receipts are also propped by last night’s $3.7M plus 661 Tuesday Fathom shows."

I'm impressed by the take of Inside Out. I didn't think it would be that big at all.

I tried to go to my local outdoor mall the other night and it was more packed then i've seen in a long time; made me wonder if a lot of it were folks going to the movies (or some other event going on there). Looking at the early numbers, that might have been the case.

Either way both flicks are perfect for Father's Day weekend.

Early estimates from Boxoffice.com. Today or tomorrow, Jurassic World will become the fastest film to $400 million. Avengers currently has that record at 14 days.

Note that JW's 2nd weekend gross is what many predicted its opening weekend would be. It'll be interesting to see what it ends up with. A strong contender for the #1 grossing movie of the year. Only Let's see what Mockingjay 2 and Star Wars can do.

SW can pass $400mm if it's good. HG will maybe come close to $400mm, but it won't touch JW's gross.

I have as much faith in Cameron doing these movies right than I do any directors who make spectacle films. He may fail, but he's not rushing anything. He hasn't come out with a "dud" at he box office since The Abyss, and that was in the 80s.

The only movie he made since Titanic in 1997 was Avatar. The less movies you make the less the chance in having a "dud".

Looks like by the end of next weekend, it should be the 5th highest domestic grossing movie of all time.

Cameron is making a big mistake with these sequels. He's much better off producing something original.

Because it opens in late December, STAR WARS' grosses will be reflected in 2016 b.o. charts. MOCKINGJAY 2 opens Nov. 20. I don't see how it could beat JW in 40 days before the end of the year. I don't see how it could beat JW at all.

I think 1 sequel would have been fine, but 3? Yeesh. That's a lot for something he admitted was a tech demo.

Or maybe he just likes to make good, entertaining stuff, and knows churning out movie after movie is a recipe for disaster. No one gives Daniel Day-Lewis crap for only doing so many movies. Nothing wrong with being selective.

That's true, technically speaking, but it will count as a 2015 movie. Just look at boxofficemojo and you see Avatar as the top grossing film from 2009. Not exactly fair, but that's how it's done, by year of release, regardless of when the money is made during that year.
