Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World

Figured I'd start one of these.

Jurassic World grossed $18.5m last night in "Previews", ranking 13th and weekend estimates between $115m and $135m.

I would like to note, that the "Previews" aren't a great indicator anymore. Back when The Dark Knight and Harry Potter DH Pt 2 were released, Theaters would show one movie on almost every screen in theater at midnight, simultaneously, and occasionally do showings before and after. That's all gone now and previews are integrated into regular showtimes, as such, $18.5m is extremely impressive.

Re: Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World

Boxoffice.com was predicting $130 mil. The all-time unadjusted June opening is Man of Steel's $116.6 mil.

This film looks like it's going to score big with all ages, so I would say $350 mil or more final US tally and maybe $1 billion worldwide. That would destroy JP3's totals.

Seems like it might be outperforming expectations. Furious 7 had ~$15M preview and $147M OW. Good news for JW is game 5 of the NBA finals isn't until Sunday IIRC.

What does "ranking 13th" mean? It makes it sound like there were 12 other films that opened last night that did better and I know that can't be. So...13th what?

13th all-time in Thursday night previews (day before a movie 'officially' opens). Of course, a lot of those previews prior to the past year or two were midnight-only showings.

Ahh, got it, thanks. Were any of those ranking 1-12 Midnight-only showings? That would be pretty impressive.

Less impressive imo. Midnight showings often had the theater showing it in numerous theaters at the same time: If they could put it on 12 screens at the same time, they'd have it playing on 12 screens at the same time. It's like having a bonus full day of showings, simultaneously. That's how Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Pt 2 had a $43.2m "Midnight" showing / $91.1m Friday ($46.9m if you get rid of the midnight gross).

You can't usually do that during regular business hours when you have a dozen other movies playing.

For Avengers: AOU Thursday night screenings, my local theater was showing it every half hour from 7PM up till and including Midnight (and that was just the 2D screenings, there was a theater showing it in 3D as well). Presumably at Midnight, they could have put it in every auditorium if the demand was there. So it's like the same thing but with added earlier showings. To me, that should add to the box office, not take away from it, because you're not just drawing the hardcores who will wait for a midnight showing, you're drawing kids, older people, and more casual fans who wouldn't necessarily come out for a midnight showing.

Ah they didn't do that here, they did a few sold out showings from 7 pm thru 10 pm and that was it.

It was interesting. A slew of us went and saw a (sold out) 7PM showing last night in IMAX 3D. When we walked out around 9, the whole theater was packed and there were only three more showings left (one IMAX 3D, two 2D). I wouldn't be surprised if all six showings they held last night were sold out. I'll be honest, I don't remember Furious 7 or Avengers: AOU being that level of chaotic during Thursday previews (and we saw both in IMAX as well).

Seems to me turnout is pretty ridiculous so far for this movie. Huge lines even for an afternoon showing, Plus the crowd loved it. Could have some legs too.

Re: Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World

This is definitely clicking with all audiences. Deadline is reporting it could have an opening of around $180 million.

Jurassic World‘s opening weekend is going to be so big, it’s going to fly Universal to the top of the 2015 domestic marketshare chart by Sunday with more than $1 billion. The fourth film in the dino franchise is expected to pull in $177M-$181M — easily becoming the highest June bow, as well as the third highest opening of all-time behind The Avengers ($207.4M) and Avengers: Age of jurassic world 8Ultron ($191.3M); Iron Man 3‘s bow ($174.1M) would move to fourth. But guess what? Some industry estimates think JW could even go higher with a FSS of $190M. Those audiences polled by CinemaScore on Friday screamed a loud ‘A’ for the fourth Jurassic Park film. JW‘s Friday is now at $78M-$80M, inclusive of $18.5M Thursday previews. That’s not just the highest June opening of all-time kicking The Twilight Saga: Eclipse to second ($68.5M), but it’s the fourth highest on the all-time charts overtaking 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($75.8M).

damn, they may have undershot their estimates by like $80 million.

they are saying this will likely be the #2 all time opening weekend after avengers when everything is said and done. that's fucking nuts.

Kids? I am in the theater right now and all I see, so far , are adults. I'm sure there will be kids but I think this movie is pulling in adults.

I couldn't decide between Dolby Cinema or IMAX 3D. Just as I decided to go Dolby Cinema it sold out. The IMAX theater is starting to fill up and the movie doesn't start for 50 mins.

Adults will drive a movie to $100m, you need the kids to double that -- which also offers prolonged franchise life. So he's actually right, the kids still loving dinos is a big part of the success.

Kids love dinosaurs and super heroes, that hasn't really changed in decades.

Same for me. Granted, looked to be a few company outings (ours included), but i didn't notice any kids. :)

Great opening!

That's crazy that this could suddenly beat Age of Ultron's opening. Kind of funny given all the lukewarm reactions from people on this forum and complaining about how bad it looked.

Oh c'mon, there's also a subset here that thinks everything looks terrible, unless it's a specialty movie in which case 5 of us give that movie a royal circlejerk and nobody else knows wtf we're talking about.

There were plenty of kids at my theatre, and what was funny was that after the show as the little shits were all excited about it I overheard one ask the dad if they could go see it again, and he was all like *sigh* "no, once is enough." I could tell he didn't like it. I'm going to assume that most adults with kids are getting dragged to this.

I would not take my 5 year old. It was pretty intense for a being rated PG-13.
