I see so many Star Wars fans on Twitter saying how The Force Awakens will overtake Jurassic World's opening weekend guaranteed. These people seem to think there isn't any record Star Wars can't break. I hope it doesn't beat JW just see their disappointment.

Well obviously SW won't outgross JW within the 2015 calendar year. I meant its total gross, but it will still count as a 2015 movie. Titanic and Avatar were the top movies of 1997 and 2009 respectively and they both came out in December.

That being said, JW will have outgrossed Avengers: AoU domestically in only ~20 days or so from its intial release date.

It's virtually impossible for TFA to break the opening weekend record. People's movie viewing habits and schedules in December are wildly different than they are during the summer. Christmas movies are all about the long, slow game. January-February are usually dead, filled with studio detritus and art-house Oscar hopefuls, allowing mass-market crowd-pleasers to rake in the big dough for many weeks after their initial release.

Another surprising fact is that Furious 7 is currently the #1 grossing movie internationally of the year, well ahead of Avengers: AoU. It's 1.51B vs. $1.37B. Avengers' only remaining territory where it hasn't been released is Japan, but whatever it grosses there won't be enough to make up the difference. China was the deciding factor this time, as Furious 7's grosses there ($391M) were significantly more than AoU ($240M). At the rate China's appetite for Hollywood blockbusters is growing, it may very well become the most important territory financially, even more than the domestic one.

Not exactly. Studios only get about 50% from China, the worst percentage of any country in the world. Sure, if you make a killing there, that's great, but if the grosses from China are 27% of a film’s title worldwide gross, meaning that the distributor will receive around 15% less from their worldwide gross, that is pretty significant (this is the story with the last Transformers movie). This may change in the future, however.

I've read studios only get 25% of Chinese grosses.

Could be. Whatever it is, it's a huge asterisk compared to other countries (at least at this point).

I've also have read this. Which boggles my goddamn mind. How DOES international distribution work out with grosses? I know countries limit imports to their market so that their stuff gets the right kind of exposure but with the money... how is that handled? China especially feels like a scam almost but the mass amount of people there it is hard to leave it.

JW now has $981 million worldwide. It should reach $1 billion today, which will be the fastest to that total, breaking Furious 7's 17 day record.

There is no concrete info available on the percentage from China though it's safe to assume it's between 25 and 30%. I hear a bigger issue is getting them to actually pay.

My point though was that the less movies you make the less chance in having any flops. Especially if you're not taking any risks and choosing movies you know will have mass appeal. Many directors like to also do movies that won't have mass appeal but will get them critical acclaim.

Cameron had enough money to retire happily, even with luxury tastes, after Titanic. I'm kind of amazed he made Avatar at all.

But then again, he doubled his fortune with Avatar. Basically at this point, he just does what he wants.

I've enjoyed how far off they've been with their estimates for JW. This will likely be at $500m domestic by next Sunday.

Same here, although we both know why they're so underestimated. Still, as a box office nerd times like this are a fun ride.

Inside Out put up some impressive Monday numbers, but I keep forgetting that schools are out, so family films should hold up particularly well during the week.

By Wednesday or Thursday Jurassic World should knock E.T. out of the top ten highest grossing domestic movies of all time. It was been in the top ten for about 33 years!!

Re: Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World

Inside Out topped Jurassic World yesterday, $9.47m to $8.9m (JW).

Currently Inside Out has $132.8m, Jurassic World is sitting at $445.8m.

Be interesting to see how these two fare this weekend. JW should be a little over $500m by the end of the weekend.

It won't. The biggest December opening to date is for the first Hobbit film, at $85 million or something like that. Now while I expect THE FORCE AWAKES to crush that record, I wouldn't be shocked if its weekend take is somewhere in the $150 to $175 million range. There's just too many factors playing into a December opening...school, weather, Christmas shopping, etc., that will prevent it from matching Jurassic World's opening.

On the other hand, I do expect it will challenge Jurassic World for OVERALL box office take...The Force Awakens will likely hang around theaters a lot longer (probably until April).

JW has a good chance of surpassing the original Avengers for #3 on the all-time domestic list. Should Titanic at #2 be worried?

It's got a decent shot at overtaking it. It will be at 500M by Monday. It will likely come close to Avatar, but it will be difficult for it to overtake that number.

The list of top movies is flawed. Because of inflation, it's really not a fair comparison with movies from 30+ years ago. The list should go by number of tickets sold.

Yes, but there is an "adjusted for inflation" ranking as well. But my point was that it was amazing that E.T. was in the top 10 grosses for that many years despite the advantage that newer movies have with inflation.

Number of tickets sold could be a way to adjust for inflation, but it doesn't account for addition revenue from 3D premiums either.
