Based on the whole 5-movie rules I'd agree that this movie wouldn't have a shot at the Best Picture nom at the Oscars but situations like this are why the new Best Picture rules exist. If District 9 could get a nomination (and that's not even close to a knock, I liked D9) then Fury Road can.
If Gladiator could get a nomination and win...

Yeah, Charlize looked really hot in Fury Road.

I might even let her peg me with that stump.

I recently watched this for the first time as well, but for some reason it fell a little flat for me. Maybe it was because what little dialog there was, was hard to hear/understand. Maybe my expectations were just too high after seeing all of the rave reviews. I don't really know. All I know is that I'm glad it was a rental and not a blind-buy for me. The action was certainly good (and nearly non-stop) and Theron was fine as well, but as a whole I was not that impressed.

It's not hard to see why that one got nominated though. It hits a stereotypical type that would get nominated from that past. It's big, it's dramatic, it's got solid acting, blah, blah, blah.

I like the film though. It's a bit too long but I think it's a good film. Saying that: Kind of a weak category that year:

Gladiator
Chocolat
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Erin Brockovich
Traffic

Never fully saw Brockovich but I know Roberts wasn't better than Burstyn. No goddamn way.

I like Chocolat but it's not amazing... at least I don't remember it being that good.

Is Brockovich really that good? It's the one Soderbergh film I haven't really been able to sit down and watch from start to end. Just sections here and there..

I have nothing but love for CTHD though.

Requiem for a Dream should have been nominated that year, and no, Roberts wasn't better than Burstyn.

You could watch Magic Mike from start to finish, but not Erin Brockovich?

I liked Brockovich, mostly because it's Soderburgh's most accessible, next to Out of Sight. The acting is good, and the story is really interesting. I did find Aaron Eckhart and his portayal a bit silly playing that type of character.

Brockovich wasn't a bad movie by any means, it's just Sourdough's most mainstream alongside Oceans 11. Well acted, directed and story worth being told.

I was kind of surprised they put Burstyn in as lead actress, though I guess she was, everybody seemed to be a supporting role to Jared Leto's character. But yes, she was better than Roberts, easily.

I thought John Travolta's A Civil Action which was very similar to Erin Brockovich and released around the same time was a lot better. It conveyed the same message without all the "look at me, I'm a single mother with huge tits and I can do just as good as the boys" bullshit Erin Brockovich had.

In 2016, there might also be a black-and-white version of the film, which Miller confirms was his original intent. A greyscale and silent version was leaked online in September, although it has since been removed. Mitchell says that an official version exists and could yet receive a theatrical release.

Apparently they toned down her tits and her attitude.

And, to be fair, Travolta's tits were getting bigger at about the same time.

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road (Miller, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

So Germany is getting the Black & White version - it says exclusive/limited edition, so who knows when it will hit the states. I preordered it via Amazon Germany and it came to about $49 shipped - almost a 1/1 ratio and it's actually all FOUR films including the B&W version in addition to 4 hours of new content for Fury Road.

Here's more info:

https://www.amazon.de/Collection-exk...bluraycom04-21

http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/06/...-max-fury-road

According to a listing posted to Amazon Germany, George Miller's Mad Max series is getting a brand-new, 6-disc "High Octane" collection (if you're in Germany, you can apparently purchase/pre-order it right now). And get this: it sounds like one of those discs will include George Miller's black-and-white cut of Fury Road.

Here's what they're saying about the matter over at Empire Online:

The beady-eyed Blu-ray collectors amongst you may have noticed that a pre-order link for the 6-disc ‘High Octane Collection’ is now available on Amazon Germany, including all four Mad Max films and a ‘Black and Chrome’ version.

According to Amazon, the ‘surreal black-and-white version of Fury Road’ (which apparently has the same 120 minute running time as its theatrical counterpart) will appear alongside some previously unreleased documentaries and four hours of ‘new bonus material’.

Four hours' worth of bonus Mad Max material. Unreleased documentaries. George Miller's long-rumored black-and-white cut of Fury Road. What a lovely day, indeed.

You'll recall that George Miller confirmed the existence of a black-and-white cut of Fury Road earlier this year. At the time, he said that the B&W cut would find its way onto a new Blu-ray release that would include a commentary and other special features. Presumably, this "High Octane" collection is what he was referring to.

When can American get its hands on one? No word as of yet, but my guess is we'll know sooner rather than later. Stay tuned.

I loved the way MM4 looked but I can see where a B&W version could be very cool too just based on the designs of the world and characters. Not sure if it'll be a better version throughout but I can see it being a fun way to see it at least. The Mist rocked in B&W and it became a better film for it too.

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road (Miller, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

Th director preferring B&W seems odd to me because the film is so colorful. There were certainly moments where the film went monochromatic. Like just red and black and latter blue and black. You'd lose all of that. Whatever?

Watched this for the first time last night. It certainly is heavy on action. Unfortunately it's so heavy that it sinks the film. I can't watch something go on for so long when there's no story or character.

I also don't like that the filmmakers fetishize cars so much, yet so frequently cheat and show cars doing things that are not remotely correct. Best example: That is NOT how a winch works.

It's loaded with story and character, it's just not obvious about it - it SHOWS character/story rather than having a bunch of exposition about them. You pick up on these details the more you watch it.

Apparently story can't be told by visual alone for Mabuse. The is FILLED w/ so much fucking story coming off of the characters in that moment. It's not feeding you all the details because it isn't important. It's a film developed in the moment of action.

I actually really liked A Civil Action. Good movie. Erin Brockovich is a pile of shit. Julia Roberts is a horrible actress and she did not deserve an Oscar for this crap.
