Having never read the book... does her curviness factor in some important/impactful way?

No.

I'm really curious about casting since most of the book takes place in a virtual world, vague but spoiler just in case:

Spoiler:
they could theoretically cast two actors for each lead role. One for the virtual world and one for the real world.

Based off of how these characters appear in the game world and real world, I'd hope so. That'd be neat. Especially considering how some are revealed. It would seem that it is important to do so.

Spoiler:
Wasn't the thing with Artemis the fact that her avatar looked like her in real life - minus the large birthmark. I would think it would be more effective to have the same actress play both (highlighting that the beauty is there in real life, but people have trouble seeing past the birthmark).

Aech is the one they'd absolutely have to have different actors for real-life and avatar.

Yes, absolutely. Her appearance and the

fact that the main character falls in love with her despite being overweight and having a birthmark on her face
is a defining aspect of the hero.

Spoiler:
I thought he described her avatar as slightly curvy (Otter fat or real life perfect) that he took to mean hinted at her possibly being bigger IRL

Not that big of a deal as long as they get the IRL people right.

Ben Mendelsohn Eyeing Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’
JANUARY 6, 2016 | 03:26PM PT

Film Reporter
@krolljvar

“Bloodline” actor Ben Mendelsohn is in early talks to play the villain in Warner Bros. and Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” sources tell Variety.

Olivia Cooke is currently attached as the female lead as Spielberg continues to test actors for the male protagonist. Warner Bros. had no comment.

The Warner Bros., Village Roadshow and DreamWorks release is based on the buzzy Ernest Cline book of the same name. Spielberg, Donald De Line, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce, with Bruce Berman serving as exec producer.

Cline’s novel, published in 2011, follows the rise of virtual reality universe the Oasis, which humans living in the not-too-distant future begin to value above the real world. Zak Penn adapted the story for the screen.

Pic is slated to bow on Dec. 15, 2017.

Mendelsohn is becoming the go-to actor for playing creepy bad guys on both the small and big screen. He is currently filming “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” in which he is set to play the villain. He also received an Emmy nomination for playing the trouble-making brother in Netflix’s “Bloodline.” Mendelsohn received strong reviews for his role in the drama “Mississippi Grind” opposite Ryan Reynolds.

He is repped by CAA and United Management. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.

Release date now 2018. This was a great book, looking forward to the movie.

Ready Player One Release Date Moves to 2018

The Ready Player One release date moves ahead three months, getting out of the path of Star Wars: Episode VIII

Warner Bros. Pictures has today shifted their release schedule, most notably moving the Ready Player One release date back three months. Look for the Steven Spielberg film to hit theaters March 30, 2018. The original Ready Player One release date had the film opening on December 15, 2017, which recently became the new slot for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. The new Ready Player One release date will see the film opening opposite an as-of-yet unrevealed Universal Monsters film.

Warner Bros. has, meanwhile, scheduled an unspecified “event” release for March 2, 2018, a New Line tentpole for April 20, 2018, and shifted the release of their untitled DC Comics film (likely The Flash) up by a single week, debuting it March 16, 2017. In all three cases, the WB titles are the first films to claim those respective dates.

Set in the near future, Ready Player One follows outcast teenager Wade Watts, who escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first.

Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Bates Motel) will star as Ar3mis, an OASIS avatar belonging to the coincidentally-named Samantha Cook. Ben Mendelsohn (Mississippi Grind, The Dark Knight Rises), meanwhile, is attached to play the story’s villain.

A Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures production, Ready Player One is based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name. The film is being directed by Spielberg, who is also producing alongside Donald De Line, under his De Line Pictures banner, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger. Bruce Berman will serve as executive producer.

Smart movie. This would've been obliterated by Episode VIII.

That article contradicts itself. It says forward three months and back three months. Which is it?

Tye Sheridan to Star in Steven Spielberg's 'Ready Player One'

The actor now joins Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendesohn in the film.

After months of searching, Tye Sheridan has emerged as the lead for Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the Ernie Cline novel for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

Sheridan now joins Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendesohn in the story that is set in a virtual world called Oasis, in which a teenager finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game's founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize.

Sheridan first gained attention in Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life and Jeff Nichols’ Mud opposite Matthew McConaughey. His recent credits include The Stanford Prison Experiment and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.

He’ll next be seen in X-Men: Apocalypse playing Scott Summers / Cyclops and indies Detour opposite Bel Powley, and Grass Stains. He’s repped by WME, Mosaic and Stone, Genow.

Simon Pegg Joins Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’
MARCH 17, 2016 | 04:18PM PT

Simon Pegg is in talks to join Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction thriller “Ready Player One” for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

If the deal closes, Pegg will join Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn in the virtual universe Oasis, created in the 2011 novel by Ernest Cline.

In the story, set in the year 2044, humans have come to prefer Oasis to the real world. Sheridan will portray a teen who winds up competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game’s founder dies.

Pegg will play Orgen Morrow, the co-creator of Oasis. “Bloodine” actor Mendelsohn has been cast as the villain.

Spielberg is producing “Ready Player One” through his Amblin Partners banner, along with Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Dan Farah.

Warner Bros. decided on Feb. 9 that it would move “Ready Player One” back three months to March 30, 2018, which allows the film to steer clear of “Star Wars: Episode VIII.”

Pegg last co-starred in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.” He will be seen in July as Scotty in “Star Trek Beyond,” which he also co-wrote.

Pegg is repped by UTA, Hansen Jacobson and UK’s Dawn Sedgwick Management. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

Mark Rylance Joins Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’

Mark Rylance is in talks to join Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller “Ready Player One” for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

If the deal closes, Rylance will join Simon Pegg, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn in the film based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel — set in a virtual universe Oasis.

In the story, set in the year 2044, humans have come to prefer Oasis to the real world. Sheridan will portray a teen who winds up competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game’s founder dies.

Rylance would play Oasis creator James Donovan Halliday. “Bloodine” actor Mendelsohn has been cast as the villain.

Spielberg is producing “Ready Player One” through his Amblin Partners banner, along with Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Dan Farah.

Warner Bros. recently pushed “Ready Player One” back three months to March 30, 2018, which allows the film to steer clear of “Star Wars: Episode VIII.”

Earlier this week, Rylance came on board to star in Spielberg’s historical drama “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” for Amblin Entertainment. Spielberg will shoot the film in the first quarter of 2017 after he finishes production on “Ready Player One.”

Rylance won and Oscar for best supporting actor in Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies” and is playing the title character in the director’s “The BFG.” Rylance is also starring in Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” which goes into production next month.

Rylance is repped by Hamilton Hodell. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news about “Ready Player One.”
