re: Wicked: Part 1 & Part 2 (2024 & 2025) D: Chu) S: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande

Universal has staked out Dec. 20, 2019 for its feature adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked. It’s been a long journey for this Wizard of Oz prequel to the big screen. The musical has been seen by more than 50M fans around the world and in March crossed the $1 billion mark in Broadway ticket sales. Worldwide Wicked has grossed $4B in ticket sales. Stephen Daldry is directing and Marc Platt is producing. The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by book writer Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life) and three-time Oscar-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin), who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation. Wicked is produced on Broadway by Platt, Universal Stage Productions, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Three and a half years seems like a long, long ramp up time. Must have more to do with wanting to milk the Broadway run than actual pre-production time.

Not crazy about Daldry for this. Hated Loud & Incredibly Close and thought The Hours and The Reader were both okay but overrated. I'm sure Universal feels he's the right guy or they wouldn't have settled on him this early, but there isn't much in his filmography that suggests it so far.

Not much to say until we start seeing actual production stuff. Loved the Broadway show.

Glad Holzman and Schwartz are involved. Can't wait to see the casting.

I hope they streamline the plot better - the stage version seems very scattershot at times.

All I remember about the second half is that a lot of people run around, and then they sing "For Good."

I hope so too and I hope that they let other characters get some added screentime as well. I would love it if they could especially do this for Nessarose's character. It would be awesome if they could give Madame Morrible an added song in Act 1 about how she predicts that these three girls will become important figures in Oz and shall rule in their respective countries foreshadowing the coming events in Act 2. This would be a cool nod to Morrible's character in the book. Also I have always wished that Nessa and Glinda had song together as well. It probably won't happen but it would make for some cool added content to an already brilliant musical.

re: Wicked: Part 1 & Part 2 (2024 & 2025) D: Chu) S: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande

Universal Pictures has set its “Wicked” movie for the Christmas season with a release date of Dec. 22, 2021.

Stephen Daldry will direct and Marc Platt will produce. The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel by Winnie Holzman and three-time Oscar-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation.

“Wicked” was produced on Broadway by Platt, Universal Stage Productions, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone. The movie version will open five days after Fox launches its “Avatar 3” along with an untitled Disney live-action movie, and an untitled Warner Bros. animated feature.

Universal had original slated “Wicked” to open during the 2019 holidays but decided instead to go with “Cats,” the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash musical, on Dec. 20, 2019.

The film adaptation of 2003’s “Wicked” is expected to include two new songs. Cast members have not yet been announced.

“ Wicked ” tells the story of the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz” and L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” from the perspective of the witches of Oz. It surpassed “A Chorus Line” last year to become the sixth-longest-running Broadway musical of all time, and has grossed $1.3 billion over the past 15 years.

re: Wicked: Part 1 & Part 2 (2024 & 2025) D: Chu) S: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande

EXCLUSIVE: After adapting Lin Manuel-Miranda’s In the Heights for Warner Bros, Jon M. Chu has his sights set on adapting one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Sources tell Deadline that Chu will direct Universal’s Wicked, the feature-film adaptation of the record-breaking musical phenomenon that is in its 17th smash-hit year on Broadway.

The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by book writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation. Marc Platt will produce for his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions. Wicked is produced on Broadway by Universal Stage Productions, Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Timing is everything and in this situation it worked out nicely for both parties. Last fall, Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry left the project after the studio was looking to move fast on the long-awaited adaptation. Around the same time, Chu had to part ways with Disney+’s new Willow series he was planning to direct due to issues with Covid-19 that kept pushing production. On top of that, Chu is expecting a baby. With Chu’s schedule open and Wicked looking for a director, the timing worked out for both sides.

With a national tour and multiple international productions, the stage musical has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide, making it one of the most successful theatrical ventures of all time. The winner of over 100 international awards including Grammys and three Tony Awards, Wicked has been performed in over 100 cities in 16 countries around the world (U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, The Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, and China) and has been translated into six languages: Japanese, German, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and Portuguese.

Senior EVP Production Erik Baiers and director of development Lexi Barta will oversee the project on behalf of Universal .

Besides adapting In the Heights, which will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max later this year, Chu directed the box office smash Crazy Rich Asians for Warner Bros. Chu is repped by UTA, Artists First Inc and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, LLP.

I want Lily James or Saoirse Ronan as Glinda. Don't know who would make a good Elphaba. Maybe Lily Collins. Can Carey Mulligan sing? She's hot right now and is likely a soon-to-be Oscar winner. She's a little old for the part now at 35, but it's one with a lot of make-up so I think it could still work.

Mulligan does sing, but I don’t see her in a musical.

They’d probably go younger. Maybe Zendaya or Hailee Steinfeld. Phillipa Soo.

I could see Steinfeld paired with Ronan. Ever since I saw her sing in Lady Bird, I've wanted Saoirse for that part.

Wicked has found its leads. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will star in Universal’s adaptation of the hit musical that is to be directed by Crazy Rich Asians filmmaker Jon M. Chu. Erivo will play Elphaba while Grande will play Glinda.

Meh. Don’t love Grande as Glinda. Erivo is certainly a musical theater veteran and should be good.

I didn’t love In The Heights as much as many, but at least Chu is a competent musical director.

I'm not sure about this. I'll give it a try, since I love the musical. However, I *much* prefer a well-directed and shot filming of the stage production over some new live action movie version of any musical. The Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods films just didn't do it for me. Hamilton was perfect. I did like Chu's version of In the Heights, though. so we'll see. Finger crossed.

^ Strong disagreement here, Bando. A movie is a movie and will exist in the world of cinema , a stage show is just a document of a performance. You picked a couple of not-great movie examples (though I quite liked Sweeney Todd, and a filmed version of that stage play exists if anyone wants to seek it out) but I am glad things like Les Miz and Chicago and Hairspray exist as feature films. Filmed stage shows are pretty disposable (thoughof course I would have liked to see a filmed version of this with Chenoweth and Menzel).
I guess part of the problem I have with this casting is putting Arianna Grande in a lead is going to make this feel a bit like a Disney Channel or Live Fox TV production. But maybe she's a better actress than I give her credit for.

I get it, Decker. It's just my personal preference. To me there is nothing like seeing a live performance of a good musical, and I want to see that captured and preserved (like they did with Hamilton). I also understand that this isn't the goal of most movies.

(I did see the film version of the Sweeney Todd stage production with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury - it was great!)

Not trying to thread hijack but, yes, this production is amazing! I watch it every Halloween season. Perfect casting. I only watched the Tim Burton flick once.

That casting actually gets me... kind of interested? I didn't love CRA and am not really a musical person (nothing against them and I like one or two), but yeah those actors seem like inspired choices.

I like living in a world where we can have both a stage document AND a feature film of important musicals. I wish it would happen more often.

I did record Wicked in Concert earlier this year but have yet to watch it. These concert versions are not as good as staged versions, of course, but I enjoy them, and they generally being in good voices (coughNickJonas).

I had to wonder if someone would post that here. LOL Corden is not nearly as talented as he thinks he is. The video of him over the summer blocking traffic to promote some other musical really pissed me off. He is becoming very unlikeable IMO
