Spider-Man: Homecoming (MCU reboot) (7/7/2017 - D: Jon Watts) S: Tom Holland

Re: Spider-Man (Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot) (July 28, 2017)
EXCLUSIVE: As Sony Pictures preps The Dark Tower (talks are starting with Nikolaj Arcel to direct) and the Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters as new franchises, and prepares to compete to re-up for the right to keep making James Bond movies when its deal expires after the upcoming Spectre (as our sister publication Variety uncovered), the studio is also getting close to untangling the web of intrigue over the next iteration of Spider-Man. It’s down to the wire, both on the choice of the actor who’ll play Peter Parker — Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are the frontrunners though Matt Lintz and Charlie Rowe also made strong impressions — and also on the filmmaker who’ll steer a multi-picture arc that takes the protagonist through high school.
After a long vetting process, Sony Pictures and Marvel are zeroed in on the favorites, St Vincent helmer Ted Melfi and Warm Bodies’ Jonathan Levine. Still in contention are John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein, the director-writers of the updated version of John Hughes’ Vacation.
There is a new contender who was a surprise to me. He is Jon Watts, a top commercials guy who made his feature debut with Cop Car, a Kevin Bacon-starrer that debuted at Sundance. This is all moving very quickly as the studio has narrowed the search from an initial field of a dozen directors, and the final decision comes down to producers Amy Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige, with Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman squarely in the mix. Not clear is whether the filmmaker who gets the job will write the script. Marvel and Sony are meeting with writers, but several of these finalists can write a script, too. Stay tuned.

Remind me again this first film w/ Marvel. From this film onward.... does Marvel retain Creative Control? Or was it that they're just rebooting it for Sony? I can't remember.
Lord and Miller would be great for this film. Interested to see where this animated film goes w/ them though.

Tom Rothman is now the Sony Chief? When did that happen?
I see that as terrible news as I expect he will undermine any good that Fiege would be able to accomplish. I don't expect him to be hands off either. Like most execs, he's got too much of an inflated ego not to insert himself into the process and much things up.

I'm still hoping for Levine to be picked as the director for this film. All his films have been solid thus far and I could see his style working well for a Spider-Man film.

Speaking of which, the guys that made the Netflix documentary "The Square" are doing a documentary on the Sony E-mail Leaks. They're siding with the chunk of the IT world that doesn't believe they were attacked by North Korea.

Breaking: Asa Butterfield Is No Longer In The Running To Become Spider-Man
During today's installment of Meet the Movie Press, Jeff Snieder reporter for The Wrap, gave an update on the Spider-Man casting process. Sources close to Sneider claim that there are only three contenders left in the Spidey casting race, Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz.
Casting is at a standstill due to Sony and Marvel being at odds with casting. Snieder says it's due to Marvel liking Plummer and Sony liking Holland.
The one absent name from the list is actor Asa Butterfield, who has been rumored for to have already landed the role. Butterfield might have screwed up his deal by going on Reddit and replying to posts that were about him and the Spider-Man castings.
The actor who will play Spider-Man is due on the set of Captain America: Civil War in July, so we should hear a casting confirmation soon!
Captain America: Civil War hits theatres May 6, 2016

I don't know any of those three actors. I don't typically follow young actors though. Get off my lawn you darn kids!
Anyway, IMDB says Lintz is only 5' tall. Is that true? How old is he? IMDB doesn't say. I can't imagine they would cast a midget Spider-Man.

Maybe he had a huge growth spurt recently, but I can't image the kid's older than 13.

If they don't hurry up and get someone cast, it's going to be interesting to see how they shoehorn the character into Captain America: Civil War. I wonder if they would just put a stuntman in the suit and just film that. I would think they wouldn't want to create the suit without knowing how it would look on whoever they cast though.

I imagine the cameo will be all cg. No sense paying a salary or wasting a contractual appearance for what can be handled by animators.

He's 14, which means he'll be the right teenage years when the stand alone Spider-Man movie comes out. Seems to make sense to me given the rumors we've heard.

^ This. Plus, he doesn't look like he's gone through puberty yet. What if he ends up being a really short, awkward looking adult? *cough*Haley Joel Osment*cough* I still would have gone with Asa over these other candidates. I think Charlie Plummer looks like Brangelina's daughter Shiloh as a teenager, but I do kind of like Tom Holland for the Spidey. I mean, he directed Fright Night AND Child's Play... that gives him major points in my book.
But seriously, he'd be my pick out of these three. My only hesitation was the guy used to have a distracting mole in the middle of his chin. It's gone in his IMDb headshot, so it appears he pulled an Enrique Iglesias.
