How/When did Nic Cage become a B Grade Movie Actor ?

I think he works best when either a director is cracking the whip over him and telling him to do acting rather than his usual shtick like Figgis did, or if he's in a movie which is already in a hyper-realistic world like Kick-Ass or Face/Off where his manic style can better suit the film. He's kind of long lapsed into self parody at this point. Most of his work is a step away from being DTV stuff now. But as his uncle directed Apocalypse Now, I'd imagine it gives him considerable sway. I've met Christopher Coppola, and he really looks like him. I didn't have the guts to say that to him though .

He'll appear in anything for a paycheck. Rage was an utterly generic crime thriller, but the producers must have been paying very well for big names in its cast. Cage remains a talented actor but he's not getting offered the premier scripts anymore.

As guilty pleasures, definitely Con Air, The Rock, Gone in Sixty Seconds, National Treasure Treasure 1 & 2, Ghost Rider 1 & 2, and Face/Off.
For all the shit he's done, he's really been in a lot of decent stuff.

Nic Cage is more entertaining than Sean Connery in The Rock, he carried that movie, which is the only great movie Michael Bay made.

After finding out that Nicolas Cage is related to Francis Ford Coppola I wondered how much nepotism was involved in his career and how much of it was based on his talent.
That said, I think he's done some great movies, like Vampire's Kiss, Kick-Ass, Face-Off, and Peggy Sue Got Married. I also like that he produced Shadow of the Vampire, a favorite of mine, and for giving the director of Begotten a chance.

I've posted this numerous times before, but it deserves to be posted as many times possible. The film is trying to be serious modern Noir, except for the scenes with Cage whose incredibly bad overacting turns this into a comedy classic:

That's you get when casting a relative in one of your films. Sofia must avoid him like the plague. Watching that also made me feel bad for the under appreciated Michael Biehn.

Never even heard of this :
Blu ray is coming out next month. From what I have read the film was taken away from Paul Schrader by the studio and was re-cut & re-edited without him. The results along with Cage's performance of a CIA agent with dementia who yells a lot, seem like they're a disaster.

At a Christmas gathering we were all talking about movies and my ex-wife was groping for the name of an actor and came up with "the Coppola who doesn't go by the name of Coppola" to describe Nicolas Cage. That was the first time I've heard him identified that way.

Maybe she was referring to Talia Shire.

If Roger Federer skips Australian Open to play a Dusseldoorf Challenges Tournament he is still an A grade talent. Same goes for Cage, sure he does a lot of crap studio films but when he is in good films he elevates them to great films every time. Very few actors can do that. He is still an A level talent

When you spend $2 million on a dinosaur skull that turns out to be stolen and owe millions of dollars in taxes you'll do anything for a paycheck. What's Cusack's excuse? Cage just trusted too many of the wrong people and had Johnny Depp style spending. There were a few of his I liked. Who can forget the flying Elvis', or "paper or plastic?" So much was just plain bad.

When I visited a video store in Osaka two years ago, they had a Nicolas Cage section. Anyone know what these films are?
