Re: Captain Marvel (7/6/2018) - News, rumors, etc.

Also, the target audience for movies is typically younger people. Younger people are going to be more familiar with the current Captain Marvel. Not the Captain Marvel from decades ago. That's their father's Captain Marvel.

Face it, when you get old, you are no longer part of the target market for most movies and pop culture in general.

If the goal of movie studios is to over-saturate the market with super heroes and make it so the average non-comic book guy doesn't give a shit... it's working.

Captain Marvel had his own cartoon show and live-action show, not to mention repeated appearances on DC's various animated shows in the past decade. No one outside of comic book fans has any idea of who this Captain Marvel is from Marvel/Disney.

Hrmmm. Sounds like what some people said of Guardians of the Galaxy too. If they sell it well.... they will come.

The last two MCU movies, Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, were massive successes. People most definitely love the MCU.

Don't lump them all together. The MCU is doing good. Pieces of shit like Fantastic Four and the Spider-Man movies don't even compare. People will ignore that shit, but make a good comic movie and people will still love it.

The difference is that Guardians of the Galaxy was unique and different from the rest of the Marvel movies, it felt like the Star Wars space opera movie we've been wanting for decades. The problem is we're going to have new Star Wars movies to fill the action/fantasy niche and a ton of costumed hero flicks that each need something to fresh to make them stand apart. I mostly like the Marvel movies but I'm struggling to keep up with them at their current pace, I'm going to get completely lost in a couple of years, especially with DC launching their own shared universe, and I wonder if other movie goers might feel the same way before long.

Of course if the market get over saturated and audiences get burned out on comic book flicks the folks here will blame WB/DC for stepping in and ruining things for everybody.

Still. Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel... will be taken care of for sure. Marvel probably doesn't want to fuck up the female superhero on a global scale. Again. Within the movie industry, this is very unique and a hell of a gamble that others can't afford to some degree. Marvel can gamble like a motherfucker now especially.

This is a key brand that Disney has identified as wanting to exploit in films. Captain Marvel will be a key element of the Marvel film universe going forward. They want to imprint their own female hero on the masses and there are no iconic design elements from the comics impeding their progress. She is basically a blank slate with the masses, which is like manna from heaven in Hollywood.

My Captain Marvel has always be Danvers. That Marvel was before my time. And I didn't care for the Rick Jones late 90s or early 2000s one.

I think the Captain Marvel costume that Carol Danvers now wears in the comics is butt-ugly. All superhero costumes change from the printed page to the big screen, so it will be interesting to see what her film costume will look like. Hopefully it will be an improvement over the current suit in the comics. And then, Marvel can change the current suit in the comics to reflect the film version's.

OMG. As a young kid she meant nothing but I loved her look in the cartoon. Was cool that Danvers was still doing some stuff in the comics. And well...she has been badass fro what now? 10 years?

Interesting that they're going with Captain Marvel and not the newer Ms. Marvel.

Multiple ways this could tie in with Agents of Shield, if it happens to still be on by the time this comes out.

Would have been pretty neat if they went with Kamala. Just to add more ethnicity to roster. I ALMOST wanted to see that happen just to see how people would accept her. How is she as a character btw? Haven't read her stuff.

So you never heard of Captain Marvel until 2012? Because she never used that name until 2 years ago.

I think that might have been an interesting on Disney's part, to start a MCU franchise aimed at tween-teen girls. CA is in the spy genre, Thor is fantasy, GotG is space opera, IM is techno-thriller action. They already have MCU spread out over multiple genres, so expanding it further would make sense.
