Method acting is overblown and histrionic.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

Movies shot using digital cameras look like shit - film is always better.

Quentin Tarantino is a hack with nothing original to say.

The best rom-coms are Silver Lining Playbook and (500) Days Of Summer.

The best Batman movie starred Adam West.

That's going to be academic very shortly, I fear.

I like Casablanca better than Citizen Kane. There, I said it.

So who was the best Joker? And who was the 2nd best too?

My bold statement on this particular topic:

Jack Nicholson totally sucked as the Joker. He depended mostly on the make-up to convince the audience that he was the Joker and then basically just played himself with some half-assed "hee-hees" and "hoo-hoos" thrown in every once and while.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

Mark Hamill was the best Joker, but Ledger is the greatest of the live action versions.

Jack Nicholson pretty much only plays himself.

Which I'm fine with.

True, but I think all the praise for Nicholson's performance as the Joker was not deserved. (He was even nominated for a Golden Globe for the performance.)

(And I've had this opinion since Tim Burton's "Batman" originally came out, so it was a lot bolder before "The Dark Knight" was release.)

You're in company with Roger Ebert, then, who said something like "When people ask me the best movie ever made, I say Citizen Kane. When they ask me my favorite movie i say Casablanca.

In TV, the driving forces are the writers and the producer (who's also a writer), and the director is the hired help who can be replaced at any time.

The only reason a writer would go into movies nowadays is if he wants to be a director. Everyone else jumps into TV in the hope that someday they'll get to run their own show.
Goes right along with this :

I’ve been offered [TV] episodes to direct, but I have to say it doesn’t attract me at all. All the things that make directing interesting – casting the lead actors, finding the locations, working on the scripts, developing the scripts, finding your crew, working with the crew – you’d have none of those if you were doing a series because they are already established. You’re more like a traffic cop.

--- David Cronenberg on why he doesn't wan't to direct TV episodes.

I don't think that's true of 70s Nicholson. Robert Eroica Dupea, J.J. Gittes, R.P. McMurphy were their own characters, they had an individual identity.

The moment the decade changed though : Jack Torrance, Eugene O'Neil, Garrett Breedlove, Charlie Partanna, The Joker -- those were all just Jack being Jack.

Halloween was seminal (in a good way), but not scary. The Blair Witch Project was both seminal (in a bad way) and quite scary.

I initially read that as "Jack Nicholson pretty much only plays with himself" and I was like

That queasy feeling "The Blair Witch Project" gave you wasn't due to it being scary but was just motion sickness caused by all the shaky-cam.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

- A movie is best seen- and shot- on film. The ubiquity of digital technology has cheapened every aspect of cinema and the cinema experience.

- Richard Wagner would have embraced movies as they adhere to many of his artistic beliefs regarding artistic form.

- People who claim movies are now inferior to TV shows are ignoring the fact that the vast majority of TV shows, still suck. Watch '2 and a Half Men' and then get back to me.

But movies would be so much better if they had a laugh track, wouldn't they?

I agree and I find his movies the ones that actually feel like Harry Potter. The rest of the movies sucked much of the charm out of the films especially Cuaron's which most people think is the best.

Sorry, meant to edit and hit submit (stupid phone). I agree, network TV mainly sucks, but premium and cable TV is about as good as it's ever been.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

How about this one:

If you deleted all the scenes from the recent Godzilla that did not have Godzilla or the other monster in it, and replaced them with scenes from "My Dinner with Andre" maybe with a little screen shake here and there, it would be exactly as good a movie maybe better.

A personal one: Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House is the best comedy no one seems to have seen other than me.

I do not find Chaplin, Harold Lloyd or Buster Keaton all that funny.

Home videos of your relatives are more entertaining than a Terrence Malick film.

Irrelevant considering that the vast majority of movies also suck. The fact is 90% of everything sucks. (Sturgeon's Law). There's really only two or three movies every year that are actually worth buying the DVD/BD.

Network TV is of course almost entirely crap, but a lot of the premium cable shows are as good or better than movies nowadays.
