This is a great topic. I've rarely encountered any American movies or TV shows about high school that rang true for me. They even made a movie about my high school, FAME (1980), not that many years after I went there and none of it seemed familiar to me. Yet, when I watch anime series about high school, I'm astounded at the high level of emotional honesty on display. I can relate more strongly to the characters in "Initial D," "Ocean Waves," "Kimagure Orange Road," and "His and Her Circumstances," than I can to the characters in "Dawson's Creek," AMERICAN PIE, THE BREAKFAST CLUB or FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH.

Wow. You've described my experience almost exactly as I remember it as well.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

The Fantastic Four reboot is better than the following films:

Iron Man
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 3
Thor
Thor: The Dark World
Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The Incredible Hulk
Ant-Man
The Avengers
Avenger's Age of Ultron

Spider-man
Spider-man 2
Spider-man 3

The Amazing Spider-man
The Amazing Spider-man 2

Ghost Rider
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

The Green Lantern

X Men 3: The Last Stand
X Men Origins: Wolverine

The Punisher
The Punisher War Zone

The Hulk

The Fantastic Four (2005)
The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Superman Returns

Daredevil
Elektra

Catwoman.

If it wasn't for the ending being a bit shaky. I'd rate it higher than nearly all comic book films. I love the direction they took the film, I love the spin Josh Trank put on it. I was engaged the whole time. This movie didn't deserve the colossal shit storm that was heaped upon it.

I don't know if Trank's Directors cut would have been better or worse due to the conflicting reports about his behaviour on set, but I really wish I could see it.

Also It sucks that theres finally a Marvel flick I really dig that has no chance of a sequel. FOX has done an infinitely better job with the Marvel Properties than Sony and Marvel Studios has its just a shame all the cement heads out there continue to swing from the balls of the MCU.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

Continuing my opinion from posting 285...

BOLD STATEMENT: I think Prometheus is a much, much better sci-fi film than Snowpiercer

Why?
- I think "Prometheus" has a more visionary depiction of the future than "Snowpiercer"

- I think "Prometheus" has a far better and more consistent plot than "Snowpiercer" (which may not be saying a lot given that "Snowpiercer" has one of the stupidest plots in movie history, depicting society class structure as envisioned by a total moron)

- Although "Prometheus" has some dumb behavior by its characters, I think they are all virtual geniuses compared to the characters in "Snowpiercer"

- "Prometheus" has a lot of bad science in it, but it's not remotely at the cartoonish level of bad science that is "Snowpiercer"

- I think "Prometheus" has much better repeat value than "Snowpiercer" which I think is a visually ugly-looking movie throughout with unlikeable characters

"Prometheus" has a lot of flaws and isn't close to being perfect, but I think its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. "Snowpiercer" is nothing but a bunch of weaknesses (idiotic story, cartoonish science, mostly unlikeable characters, and stupid behavior by everyone in the movie) without a single good thing about it to recommend (IMO).

(And I do think a lot of people jump on the social bandwagon with each of these movies, joining the haters nitpicking all the stupid stuff in "Prometheus" and also joining the praisers who inexplicably ignore all the stupid stuff in "Snowpiercer". When people do this, they aren't really expressing their own opinion but just are going with the crowd - IMO, that is ).

IMO they're both about the same and neither was all that.

I've only seen Prometheus, but that statement makes me want to stay far, far away from Snowpiercer.

I thought it was mediocre but I would not consider it his worst film.

My student film is better than Jonah Hex. And shorter. But then, most things are.

Does your student film have Megan Fox?

I didn't think so.

Besides, JONAH HEX was mercifully short compared to most comic book films. It gets points for that.

My school was full of cliques, not as polarized as TV/movies but they were there. I was always outside of several like a large group and I heard stories from some that some Hollywood producers would kill for. There was the love triangle that involved a stabbing, fight and ended in suicide. I graduated in 1990 and Fast Times and Dazed & Confused have several elements that remind me of my highschool.

Re: Make a bold statement about movies.

I realized I've never responded to this thread... Just one comment, maybe not particularly bold: the vast majority of Hollywood movies are remarkably retrograde in their morality, handling of race, and in particular in their depiction of women. It's like Hollywood remains stuck in the 1950s.

Yeah, although I try not to hold earlier generations to the standard of our time, the outdated views do stand out quite often in older movies.

Honest Trailers did a hilarious dissection of Disney's "Peter Pan" on this topic:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Mi-cMWcXtBI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

(although it's not only "Peter Pan" that has this glaring issue)
