It had the second highest Per Theater average in the top 10, behind Wild (which only opened in 116 theaters) and the highest grossing "wide release" (> 500), so there's a chance.

Re: Top Five (2014-15, D: Chris Rock)

Enjoyed this overall. Yes some stuff was over the top. Chris Rock is still one of the best standups of all time, so I hope he can really make the directing thing work. I was lucky enough to see him in a small club a few months back while he was testing out new material for a rumored upcoming tour.

I don't understand how stuff like Madea can get a wide release out of the gate and make a bunch of money, but this can't? Why isn't it being marketed more? Funny there is a comparison to that very topic in this film.

Pretty sure he didn't want a huge release. On Howard Stern, he said he was interested in filling screens with people, so playing around 1000 screens or so.

It was okay. Not nearly as funny as I expected or as profound as Chris Rock apparently thinks it is. Some nice dialogue scenes between him and Rosario Dawson though. That comparison to a "Before Sunrise"-light type movie is pretty spot-on for those scenes.

Saw it. What this review says. Funny dialogue, but not worth the 90% rating it has on RT.

Agree with all of the above. From the trailers, I expected it to be non-stop laughs. It was more of a drama with many really funny scenes. And it was a well made film. Rock did a tremendous job on the screenplay. Specifically the dialogue with him and Dawson. I kept thinking Woody Allen but the "Before" movies would be a better comparison.

That scene with Cedric the Entertainer in the hotel room with the women had me rolling.

Amazing movie. Wish this had gotten nominated for best picture over Grand Budapest (Wes Anderson's weakest to date).

Re: Top Five (2014, D: Chris Rock)

While I agree I would have preferred it get a Best Pic nom over a lot of the others, I disagree with which one (Grand Budapest, IMO, is the strongest of a rather weak Best Pic lineup). Definitely deserves the slot over Theory of Everything, American Sniper, and Selma. I'd also put Birdman on that list, but that had some slick filmmaking qualities I liked about it, even if I didn't like the movie itself.

The movie had energy to it and felt alive, something that seems to be getting progressively rare. But definitely more a drama than comedy.

I liked it but I didn't love it. It was less "ha ha" funny and more "hmm" funny.

Also, it seems like the overall message of the film is only do what you know you're good at, don't try to stretch artistically. That leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

I didn't really take it that way. He was trying to do dramatic roles because he was scared that he wasn't funny sober. He was doing them to get away from his fears rather than embracing doing what he loved sober (which I imagine is like starting all over).

I would agree with that if it weren't for the scene with DMX.

Still really disappointed that this was such a bomb at the box office. Throw Kevin Hart or Tyler Perry in the title or promotions and the damn thing makes nearly what this film did overall in its first weekend.

Oh well. Good effort, Chris Rock.

I wouldn't consider it a huge bomb, and I think it'll do great on video. The movie had a $12m budget, made $25m domestic, hasn't been released overseas, but should cop a profit for Paramount once it's available On Demand/DVD/Blu thanks in part to the huge cast.

FWIW, despite all the hype and acclaim, Birdman has only grossed $33m domestically.

Sure. But Birdman is basically an art house film, which I really enjoyed, but can understand why it wouldn't get good word of mouth among mainstream American moviegoers.

Kevin Hart was in 1 scene, and everybody with a computer knew that.
