Top Five (2014, D: Chris Rock)

Has anyone heard anything about Chris Rock's new movie? He directs and stars in Top Five.

He's one of my favorite comics, but his movies have never been very good.

But apparently at the Toronto Film Festival, Top Five may get sold for $12.5 million from articles I've read.

The thing must be a winner if its getting crazy interest like that. I can't find a trailer or anything for it.

It's listed as Finally Famous on rotten tomatoes with one review:

Like Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson so I'll probably watch it regardless, just depends if that's in theaters, on demand, redboxed or streamed through Netflix.

Re: Top Five (2014-15, D: Chris Rock)

I saw it at TIFF and it is excellent - easily Rock's funniest movie to date. There were at least five times I was crying from laughter. It has heart, some nice satire and some extremely raunchy humour but it is really well put together - and has some killer cameos as well. If this gets released this year, it'll easily be on my best of the year list. It's not perfect, but for me it was damn close. I loved the hell out of it (for reference, I love Rock's stand up but thought "I Think I Love My Wife" was one of the worst movies I've ever seen) and think Paramount will make this a huge hit. I can't wait to see it again.

Thanks for the feedback. Great to hear this!

I wonder if Paramount might try to slide it into December, but this sounds like it has summer comedy written all over it, so we'll probably have quite a wait for it.

Hoping we get a trailer soon.

Re: Top Five (2014-15, D: Chris Rock)

Chris Rock said he hoped whoever bought it (this was before the sale) would release it this year so Rosario Dawson could get an Oscar nomination - his reasoning was that if Melissa McCarthy could land one for taking a shit in a sink, Rosario could land one for this We'll see if that comes to fruition but with the bidding war, that may have been one of the conditions of sale.

OP, you're right, his movies have never been that good - but I still really like them, especially Head of State. I'll definitely check this one out as well.

Re: Top Five (2014-15, D: Chris Rock)

Currently at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Comes out this Friday.

Looks hilarious.

Cast:
Chris Rock
Kevin Hart
Tracy Morgan
JB Smoove
Rosario Dawson
Gabrielle Union
and
Jerry Seinfeld & Adam Sandler have small roles.

Here's a small sample of what The Village Voice had to say about it:
"Chris Rock couldn't have planned it this way, but his exuberant and wondrous comedy Top Five, opening at just the right time, is like an airdrop of candy over the city, if not the country."

He was on Howard on Monday, great interview as usual, he talked a lot about the writing, getting it financed and it playing at TIFF. I'm really looking forward to it.

He has several great interviews out there, including Rolling Stone, and I think New York magazine.

He has said this film never would have been made if he'd gone the major studio route from the beginning.

Or they would have tried to force a PG-13 on him etc.

This must not be getting a very wide release, only one of my local theaters (and the third-closest one to me, so it's a bit of a drive) is getting this. I was hoping to see it, but it looks like most theaters are doubling-up on Exodus (more than one screen).

It's getting nearly 1,000 screens, which ain't bad. I noticed that as well. I'm sure they'll add screens for Dec. 19.

This will do very well this weekend.

Saw this today and it was funny. The performances were solid and the cameos were cool. There were only one or two times I thought things went a wee bit over the top (Cedric the Entertainer I'm looking at you) but otherwise, it was a good film.

I thought it was okay, seemed like Before Sunset light, with some funny moments and some dumb ones too.

The Benadryl/job joke in the trailer is funny.

I felt Anders Holm's bit in the film was more over the top and felt completely out of place than that of Cedric's scene. Cedric's scene provided context into the film whereas Holm's bit was a cheap gag.

I was surprised by how the trailers market the film and its wide cast. This film revolves primarily around Rock and Dawson's characters; everyone else pretty much gets one scene before they're done.

The film is worth the price of admission alone based upon the shot
Spoiler:
of Jerry Seinfeld making it rain on a group of strippers.

I haven't been following this lately, but that is what surprises me too. I remember hearing about this when it first made the festival rounds. The commercials and trailers look NOTHING like what I was expecting after hearing about this initially.

Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, and Whoopi Goldberg have more screen time in their one scene than say Cedric the Entertainer or Kevin Hart who are primarily featured in the trailers.

I was also confused by the red-band trailer as the current SNL cast members that were promoted by being in the film (Che, Jones, and Pharoah) have about ten lines total combined.

Well, I was wrong. The movie only made $2.5 million on Friday.

Really enjoyed this. Definitely a comedy with a heart, but not sappy.

That's maybe the funniest sex scene I've ever seen in a movie.

Great Film. Well written, good music, well acted and directed. Did not really expect this to be as good as it was.

I saw the trailer for this in front of Dumb and Dumber To and thought it looked surprisingly funny. I'm not a huge Chris Rock fan but I'd like to see this eventually.

Re: Top Five (2014-15, D: Chris Rock)

Made $6.9 millon 979 screens this weekend. Not sure that's enough to warrant an expansion to more screens.

Word of mouth and reviews are real good though.
