I came in here to post the same thing. At one point in Payback Porter says that his past job was as a "driver". Get the Gringo goes out of its way not to name Gibson's character only calling him "The Driver" in the credits. That plus the fact that both characters have the exact same mentality and motivations throughout both movies I have to believe that Get the Gringo was an intentional follow up to Payback.

The two that come to mind are:

Three Days of the Condor and Spy Game with Redford playing the same character.

and

The Conversation and Enemy of the State with Hackmen playing the same character.

It seems like the only movies I see now are kids movies so whenever my kids watch Cars/Planes movies I imagine it is a sequel to the Terminator movies after the machines won.

Enemy of the State has always seemed to me like a sequel to The Conversation. It's also intriguing to me how well Layer Cake works as a precursor to Casino Royale.

I hated Spy Game when it first came out but had not seen Condor yet. Finally saw Condor last year and it rocked. May give Spy Game another watch just to see if I'll like it knowing what I know now.

Both work well in that regard. One could argue
Spoiler:
Craig survived the shooting in Layer Cake and his stories were relayed to MI6, who then chose him for their 00 program.

I've also felt that The Rock was meant as somewhat of a sequel to James Bond, as many inferences can be drawn from Connery's character to lead one to that conclusion.

Starship Troopers works as an indirect sequel to Robocop. The history lesson given at the beginning by Michael Ironside about the world's society certainly sounds like the one in Robocop.

It's kind of depressing to think they'd just lock up James Bond like that.

Solder is "officially" in the same universe as Blade Runner, but it takes place earlier.

Funny but i felt the same way about Spy Game as well when i first saw it. The kinetic jump cuts bugged the hell out of me and i found it tedious. For some reason about a year later i re-watched it and enjoyed it. Since then i have watched it loads of times and it gets better with each viewing. Redford really is great in the movie. I now regard it as one of Tony Scotts best movies.

Actually, coincidence that both movies i mentioned (Enemy of the State and Spy Game) were both directed by Tony Scott.

I love Spy Game. Probably one of my favourite Tony Scott flicks. And you're right... Redford kills it in that movie.

I clearly need to seek out Three Days of the Condor.

In THE BLACK STALLION (1979) Mickey Rooney plays a former jockey who could be his NATIONAL VELVET (1944) character 35 years later. In fact there's a still of him from NATIONAL VELVET used in BLACK STALLION to reveal his past as a jockey.

I think I recall hearing that Crazy Heart is meant to act as somewhat of a coda to Tender Mercies.

And not a very subtle one
"I'm Stanley Goodspeed"
"Well of course you are"

And didn't Connery's character make a reference to having worked for the British Secret Service?

Here's my entry:

The Stendhal Syndrome is a sequel to The Bird With the Crystal Plumage and Deep Red.

"Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" is so closely related to "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" that it's basically considered a sequel. Joan Crawford had even begun filming scenes for "Charlotte" until she fell ill and her nemesis Bette Davis got her booted off the film and she was replaced with Olivia de Havilland.

Hell, they even talk about games in the trailer. Its a great movie and i would say plays as a superb double bill with Spy Game.

Is The Seven Ups a sequel of sorts to The French Connection? I never got around to seeing it.

Philip D'Antoni, the producer of TFC is the producer & director of T7U. Both gritty New York crime films have Roy Scheider & Tony LoBianco in major parts, the same technical consultants, composer and stunt men/stunt coordinators. T7U also features an amazing car chase that is even better than the one in TFC.

Sonny Grosso, who was in on the French Connection case with Eddie Egan, was played by Roy Scheider in THE FRENCH CONNECTION, and provided the idea for THE SEVEN-UPS and was involved in the production. Scheider again played a character based on Grosso, so yeah, it's kind of an unofficial sequel.

Whoa. The first 30 seconds of that trailer is intense! I'm putting this at the top of my "must watch" list now.

I like to think of Election as a late sequel to Ferris Bueller. His own Welcome Back Kotter and his ultimate comeuppance.

There's such a similar vibe between the two movies that you could almost see Deathtrap as a sequel to Sleuth if you decide that Michael Caine was in fact not fatally wounded in that first film.
